Viewer Alert: While watching the video, @sethjones5250 noticed at the 41:00 mark that I forgot to reinstall the nut that holds the spool on the spindle shaft. While the door continues to operate flawlessly after more than four months (the cables and cover are apparently holding the spool In position) I would not recommend anyone copying my mistake! My apologies for not catching this at the time of recording. I have no idea what happened to that wayward nut!

I hope this works on my 2008 Odyssey. My mechanic made me believe he fixed both of my doors with new parts back in December, and while he supposedly saved me some money (dealer just quoted me $750 for whole assembly, and $364 for labor), he cost me over $3K telling to put a newer motor on it when my van broke down, and it's badly rotted underneath!!! Now I'm too i invested into fixing this van, and have to fix the passenger side sliding door again, when the Honda dealer manually opened the door and broke the cable, after claiming they fixed the door from not responding to open electronically. The guy didn't even take responsibility for breaking it and said the wire looked old and rusted, and my other mechanic was to blame in his eyes. Twice I went to the dealer, and came out terribly worse than the problem I brought it there for! I'll try to update my comment if and when I get the door done myself. Thank you for the detailed tutorial. You're a 💎 gem!

Thanks for posting this video. The dealer quoted $1,300 to replace the cable. But, I was able to complete the passenger side without any significant issues using this video. For the passenger side, please note that the air unit does not need to come out. Only unscrew it and tilt it carefully to access the area needed. An extra long drive is needed with a tilted adapter and a magnet so the nuts don't fall behind the air unit.

Thank you sooo much for this video. It made it really clear what to do. One thing I figured out is that the back cable goes in on the front side of the spindle when fixing the passenger side door. That's maybe why some people say it needs to be that way. I first did it the other way but the cable were crossing each other and I knew that couldn't be right. So I did the opposite of your instructions and it's all working! Thanks!

Thank you SO much for this video! The cable on the only working door on our 2011 Odyssey snapped and with 3 small kids and 2 large dogs to load and unload it was a real headache. Not only was I able to replace the cable on the driver's side, I felt confident enough to replace the motor and cable on the passenger side. We've got 2 working doors now and easily saved $1,500-$3k in labor costs! Also, your tip for sliding the door open (instead of midway) before wrapping the cables was crazy helpful. I am so grateful to you.

I was able to get that in place with in less than 5 mins because of you. My initial attempts were unsuccessful and frustrating. I almost forgot to reinstall the nut that holds the spool on the spindle shaft. you suggestion to check the assembly after manual test made me realize I had an extra nut. Taking pictures and checking twice helped a lot too. Thanks a ton again for posting the video!! saved us a ton again. My friends car has a cable broken too. So, will try fixing that too. They have been holding it off for over 6 months as they were quoted $1500-$2000.

Thanks for taking the time to provide this. This is the second time I have replaced the cable. Hoping to make the first frustrating repair easier. You touched on the poor advice I previously relied on for stringing the cables on the spool "backwards" which required a second take apart and figure out the correct winding by trial and error. Thanks for clarifying this!!! Also winding the back first and putting the spool in the compartment while completing the shorter front length is genius! You have made this easier and I am excited (not terrified) to pursue this repair the second time with an more friendly approach. Will share final post correction update. Thanks!!

You are the man! Incredibly thankful for this video. I replaced the passenger side, and like a commenter below I discovered that on the passenger side the cables are wound around the spool in the opposite direction (the front cable winds around the back of the spool). Enormous headaches on the passenger side due to a massive air-handling unit that blocks the rear cable exit. I couldn't figure out how to remove it completely. I was able to loosen the unit enough to work around it and only lost one bolt to the void in the process.

Great video! I was able to remove the interior trim pieces without removing the 2nd row seat. Also, at the 14 minute mark, after removing the clip on top, using PB Blaster, and lots of hammering, the pin still wouldn't budge. For those who are struggling with removing the pin, just remove the two 12mm bolts that secure the hinge to the sliding door and remove the entire hinge/door trolley from the track. This was a lot easier than trying to hammer out the pin. Thanks again! Hopefully this repair will last awhile!

We were able to get the inside side panel off without opening the door and removing the floor board. We were able to pull the panel back but not completely remove it. Once we opened the motor and cut off the cables that were wound so tight, we were finally able to open our door and do the door steps and take off the outside panel of the van. You are the man!!! Saved me $1000 - $1300. For anyone else doing the passengers side, as another commenter noted, rear cable goes in the front of the spool for passengers side. Also, don’t be scared by the rear a/c unit. Take out three visible bolts around the perimeter, and gingerly pull it slightly forward out of the way so you can get to the rear cable guide nuts. Cut my hands up pretty good, lost 2 10mm sockets behind the a/c, and one of the cable guide bolts, but it’s secure with two. And it works!!!! Thank you thank you thank you!

This tutorial was great! I’ve dealt with opening and closing the door manually for about a year because I thought I needed to buy the Honda OEM cable and motor assembly. Thanks to this video I was able to buy the cable on Amazon for less than $30, and fix it in less than three hours. I had a difficult time taking the door pin out to remove the rollers, so I ended up unbolting the door side of the hinge. While this made it easy to extract the pin, at the end of the install the door was not automatically closing. After a bunch of troubleshooting, I realized I misaligned that bracket when bolting it back on. So I’d advise against removing that bracket. If you do remove it, make sure to put it back on exactly how you pulled it off.

This was a very helpful video. With this video I was able to replace the cable system in 2.5 hours. My car repair guy told me to not bother because you'd have to replace the whole motor etc, and just cut the wires and use it as a manual door. I decided to not take his advise. If I did it again I could do it under 2 easily. I bought the pre assembled and cut kid off amazon for $20 CAD. I wouldn't bother with the ones you have to crimp yourself. One thing to note that might make this easier is to not reattach your door to the slider assembly until almost the last step. this made spooling the bobbin easier.

Great video! Couple things I found out: reinstalling the long horizontal exterior panel was almost impossible to simply reverse the process. Exponentially easier to remove the clips from the car, place them in the slots they go into on the panel, then carefully aligned them to the holes and pop the entire panel in place. To remove the clips, align them so the shelf is horizontal, 2 flat screwdrivers also aligned horizontal and between the clip and car, and press both toward the center while pulling the clip out. I also found it easier to remove the bearing mechanism from the door by unscrewing the 2 bolts that attache the entire thing to the door instead of taking it apart at the hinge.

Hello and thanks for the amazingly thorough video. I completed both the driver and passenger side doors on our 2015 Odyssey about 5 weeks ago. 1. The drivers side is way easier and glad I did that one first. Also, the wire made a clean break and everything was quite clean in the spool on my driver side motor. 2. The passenger side was a bear. I was stressed about dropping bolts and it was simply much more difficult to access everything. The spool was a jumbled mess of tattered wire - pretty much what’s shown in the video. As a result, the ridges of the spool weren’t quite as pronounced as they probably should be but I cleaned it up and it works, albeit not the smoothest close of an automated door. I do have a question for you/anyone that might have insight. The driver side door, that was clean and relatively easy to go back together has frequent issues fully closing. I would say maybe 30% of the time the door makes it about 2/3 the way shut, then does a hesitation and opens back up. This is remedied by either trying again a few more times or trying to muscle it past that point to get the door to fully close. Is this a common problem anyone else has experienced? Could this be something that I did during re-assembly causing this? Note the only deviation I made from the video was removing the two bolts holding the door on, then removing the pin and putting the bolts back on. Could my door by un level? Is there something I could clean or lubricate that might help? My wife is ready to sell the van and get a new one, and with 205K miles it might be close anyway, but I wanted to get another year or two out of it if possible. Thanks again for the great video and appreciate any insight you all might have.

You can purchase a replacement upper roller. I am addressing the passenger side motor and noticed the upper roller wheels are shattered (I assume from forcing it open/closed over and over). This is causing enough resistance that will make the motor stop and re-open.

Thank you so much for this tutorial! As a housewife with a "can do" attitude, I was able to repair our 2012 Passenger side sliding door with one major edit. Because I was doing the opposite side of the car, I mirrored his instructions for winding up the cable to the spool. I CLOSED my sliding door to wind up the cable. This made my front cable longer and my rear cable shorter BECAUSE I also had to reverse and put the forward facing cable in the BACK of the spool and the rear cable in the front (OPPOSITE of how he does, and warns you not to do so).*If I did it his way, my cables criss-crossed at the white roller housing before the spool and I figured that would cause major rubbing and break again eventually. Once I figured out that, It was a simple as he showed. ** Also note, the Passenger side does have the AC blower unit that makes the rear cable housing **very** hard to reach. I have small hands and was barely able to squeeze one in there, but I had to loosen the blower unit with 10mm bolts and peel back a little more of the interior trim near the trunk.

This is such a helpful video… and the comments from other users, too. Ours is broken on the passenger side. Unfortunately, we got everything opened up, the cover off the motor, removed the nut with some effort, unlike yours that was loose, and found the spool wouldn’t budge. Thanks for the video. Great tip about having the door open all the way and winding the back cable first. Winding the cables really wasn't hard at all. Also, thank you for the link to the cable assembly, it was so easy to not need to measure, cut and crimp the cable and it really wasn't that much more expensive (it was like $33 v $25, but Amazon had 10% off coupon). The only thing I did differently was taking the rear door slider out. I marked the hinge (so that when I bolted it back it would go right back to the original spot) and then just took out the two bolts, this seemed easier than messing with the E clip and punching out the pin, the repair manual states that the torque for those two bolts are 22 lbf-ft.
@YOUCanFixAnythingAuto7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad opening the door all the way helped you too. I kinda figured that out as I was struggling with rewinding the cable and thinking through the best approach. I could not get the pin out no matter how hard I tried, so I took the two bolts off and pounded the pin out on a vice. . Overall, not to bad, I just went at a steady pace. Thank you for this excellent video, it was a HUGE help to me. My cable broke on the passenger side which is much harder to replace because the AC blower blocks the back cable unit. Royal pain to get around. I had to disassemble a good portion of the blower. My advice is to go with the cable only approach if your passenger side door is broke.

Great video. I had to do the passenger side which has the cable wound opposite this side. Procedure: Put door in MOSTLY closed position and FRONT cable winds on the back of the spool. Also, make sure to check slack on the outside of your van before testing. Front end of my cable somehow got underneath the track, which shaved off the cable coating. Lucky me, I got to do this twice. Grateful it only cost me $28 each time.

I’ve done this fix before replacing just the cables and not the entire assembly. Was a great deal of work and lasted only able 6 months before the cable broke. This time around I ordered the complete assembly. Was around $550 for the part. FYI, the part number for right (passenger) side is 72010-TK8-305. Driver side is 72050-TK8-305 Took about 2 hours to do and now all is well.

Thanks for the feedback and for providing part numbers. It seems like some people have cables that break within a year or two, but most others have no problems. That’s one risk of buying non-OEM parts (that goes for parts from AutoZone and NAPA too). OEM parts are always the best, but you will pay for it. However, the ease of installation and high quality adds lots of value. It’s a decision each person needs to make for themselves. 👍🏼

@@michaelthompson3617 - after more than six months, my cable is still working perfectly. So last night I spent 12+ hours replacing the passenger cables only in a 2012 Odyssey. I almost gave up several times at various stages of the process. Mostly due to inaccessibility to the screws or at best super tight space to get anything onto them to loosen them or tighten them. The winding of the cables took me a while to figure out. The trick was to close the door all the way first. Then wind up the cable toward the back of the spindle by rotating it otherwise the cable twists. Then using the pulleys and their springs was then able to wind the rear cable on the front of the spindle and voila a perfect assembly. Remember don’t wind the cable on the spindle rather rotate the spindle to wind in the cable.

Awesome awesome tutorial! The trouble spots are the door pin and getting the spindle back in. The pin - I took a flathead screwdriver and wedged it in with a few taps. It just needs to break away the first part and then it slides out nicely. The spindle reinstall was the most difficult. After I realized what those springs did I was able to stretch cables far enough to set everything into place. Broke a few clips removing the interior pieces which is lame. Luckily I have a set of honda clips set from amazon just waiting to be used.😀

Glad it worked out for you. By removing the pin, you don't have to worry about marking the bracket and realignment issues upon reassembly. I didn't have any trouble, but it has been a headache for some. Regarding the spindle, exercising the springs makes all the difference!

Passenger Side - Touring model 2011 - school of hard knocks lesson - for my model the rear air conditioner was in the way of the bolts for the rear pulley which goes to the outside rear of the sliding door. This was a major pain to remove the nuts for the rear pulley. My vocabulary was expanded during this effort. Had to loosen the air conditioning assembly, still difficult to complete with limited very awkward access to the nuts. Only lost one nut and one socket in the rear quarter panel - not funny by the way. Those two items will stay with the vehicle :). In hindsight, I would use the wire only kit for the passenger side repair if your model has the AC assembly in the passenger rear. regardless, thank you for the recommendation on spooling the pulley wheel with the door all the way back, back side cable first on the rear of the spool, brilliant advice. Unfortunately it appears my motor is bad (did not work after completion, and after checking the fuse supporting the right passenger door motor), so I will purchase a new replacement motor and use all the experience I now have to reinstall the new motor. Nice job on the video! Very clear, very informative, however the passenger side with AC will be much more challenging!!

My cable snapped this morning because door had unknowingly frozen shut. This video will prove invaluable and I REALLY APPRECIATE you creating/posting it! Two quick questions: 1) Is it the same cable set from either NewEgg or Amazon? If not, do you recommend one over the other from a quality standpoint? 2) I worry about disassembling everything and discovering that (like you) they sent me the wrong cable lengths. Any chance you (or any viewers) know the correct cable lengths so I can measure what I receive BEFORE tearing the van down for replacement? Again - Thanks for all the assistance!
@YOUCanFixAnythingAuto10 ай бұрын
If I remember correctly, I ordered it from Newegg because it was out of stock at Amazon. I used the part number from Amazon to search for the part, so it’s likely that they are from the same manufacturer. Amazon is a one-stop shop and has a good return policy IF you need to return it within 30 days. With Newegg, I was able to get the replacement part sent out because the seller know and admitted to it being a shipment of defective parts that, according to them, was a one-time fluke. I was able to get the part replaced months after they were obligated to do so.

Hi, Tammy. I’m sorry to hear the cable replacement didn’t fix the issue. Here are a few questions: -Was the old cable broken? What was its condition when you opened the housing where the spool and motor are located? -When you first noticed the problem, before attempting the repair, did the motor make any sound when you tried to open the door with either the button inside or by pulling the door handle? Does it make any sound now? -Have you verified that the switch on the dash that controls the door is on (sorry. Dumb question, but I have to ask)
@dwilson2472 күн бұрын
Great video, thanks so much. I had the same issue as the commenter above. Replaced the cable, reattached the battery, and nothing on the drivers side door. No noise, nothing. The spool in the motor looked about like yours when I took it apart. The power to the doors is on. The passenger side works without an issue. But nothing on the drivers side. The cable was broke, which is why I assumed all it needed was a cable replacement. Could the motor be shot as well? Do you have a link to just the motor now that I have cables in it? I also have a little bit slack in both sides of the cable, which caused a little concern, but figured it would tighten up once the motor kicked in.
@PaulOnstott4 ай бұрын
Thanks for this very helpful video. My door is opening but only manually. How can I know if the problem is the cable or the motor?
@YOUCanFixAnythingAuto14 күн бұрын
I suggest a two-step diagnostic check. First, make sure the powered door open is switched on. When you push the button you should hear the door motor running. If you do, the problem is likely the cable. It you don’t hear it, the motor may be shot. Second, if you don’t hear the motor, check your fuse to make sure it’s not burnt. Let me know what you find out!

Almost always when I remove the side panel that covers the sliding door track, the bracket that the panel screws in to at the front of the panel comes off.
