From March 12th to March 19th I pulled a 8x24 foot cargo trailer from Northern Colorado down to Santa Fe, NM, and then onward south to Austin, Texas while helping my brother relocate down there for one heck of a job opportunity.
How well did the power wagon do? watch and find out!! THANKS!!

I pulled my 26" cargo trailer from NC to MN and back in October with no issues driving my 2020 PW and averaged 8 mpg. I had a 2018 Cummins and pulling the same trailer, I got 11 mpg, but the diesel cost $.75-1.00 more per gallon, so it averages out. I also don't need to deal with the filter changes or DEF. I do miss the torque curve of the Cummins and the turbo boost on hills.

that's pretty good, i was closer to 9 on the way down to texas, all downhill with a tailwind haha! but on the way back, holy cow that 5-6 mpg in the wind made my trip average really come down.

I upgraded to a larger trailer (32' with 9'6" interior) and the Power Wagon couldn't handle it. On the highway, the trailer jerked me all over and it was a difficult drive. I upgraded to a Ram 3500 DRW with the HO and it pulls like a dream. But I miss my PW. @@JustinKingOffroad

We drive from the DFW area up to Angel Fire ,NM a lot. Our gas milage is always worse on the way up because of the wind. I drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee but we still see a difference in mileage. We had a pickup that was said to get 21MPG but it would drop down to 14 headed to NM because of the wind. Thanks for the video. That was a lot of money for gas you spent!! Glad you made a safe trip!

Great video Justin. Just found it. I have a '14 RAM 2500 with 6.4 and the 6-speed. I don't have all those nice 8 gears, but will run in 3 -5 with that kind of of trailer in those conditions. That is exactly how my 6.4 runs too for the most part. When the wind is blowing around my area of Wyoming, it doesn't matter how light the trailer but if the profile of the trailer is higher, it puts a hell of a load on the 6.4 and its gotta run in that 2800 to 4000 rpm range. Any of the newest V-8's in GM, Ford, or RAM would have done the same in those conditions. Though the power would have been much smoother, even a modern diesel in those winds would have struggled with fuel economy, and I'd bet you'd might have saved only $120-$160 in diesel which is probably the difference in payment between gas and diesel for 1 month. So in the end...let that 6.4 or any other big V-8 rev when your only doing intermittent long trips like this.

I towed an empty 8x24 enclosed trailer from Ohio to Texas to get a car with a 2001 Chevy 2500 with an 8.1 and an Allison. The trailer pulled like a barn empty. Did a little better on the return home with a rolling chassis for a Chevelle for weight. Pig on fuel either way and I was really disappointed in the power from the big block engine. Was hoping to do the same trip with my Duramax I got to replace it, but it never happened. I can say the 8100 was definitely not an alternative to the diesel in my mind. I think my other truck with a 6.0 would have done just as well. It was 2 years ago now, but I’d say my fuel consumption was similar to yours, with plenty of stops due to the small tank size on an extended cab truck.

I went from a 3500 Cummins to a 2500 6.4 w/4.10s and I think the 4.10s make a big difference. Its been all cold weather towing so far, but comparing my fuel log when I had the Cummins to the 6.4 w/4.10s, my mpg's are worse, but the total cost at this same point with the Cummins was about $400 more and I am taking into consideration how diesel was over $5/gal.

i would like a diesel but not a modern one. one of the older generations like early 2000s. my dad has one and it's regularly pulling 18-20 mpg with no trailers. loaded, keeping your speeds reasonable, he's in the 12-14 range. but, with the gasser, you're saving on the higher costs of maintenance overall, like the really expensive oil changes.

People should learn how to merge properly. Too many people think it is up to the vehicle already on the freeway to make room and move over for them. That is not the case. 2 years ago I had a similar situation as you when I was driving my Hellcat, I was already in the furthest outside lane of the freeway and a Subaru was behind a semi merging onto the freeway. The Subaru put the speed pass on the semi as soon as he could not even looking to see if the lane was clear. He saw my red fender just before hitting me and went into his best avoidance manuver but failed and in my review mirror I watched him roll several times across the median and ended up on the opposite lanes of traffic.

I agree with everyone else and my own experience a headwind with an enclosed trailer is going to destroy your mileage . but it kills the 6.7 Cummins as well like 11-12 mpg . and with the price difference with diesel. it is sort of a wash. I pull my boat it weighs 6500lbs and trailer roughly 1000 lbs i get 10 mpg for the 200 mile trip 2020 powerwagon. your not doing bad.

Well just the little I pulled my car trailer(without my crawler on the trailer). I saw no difference in mpg. With the taco on the trailer I am thinking 8 to 9 mpg which to me that’s normal on a gasser. My 22 in V8 with MDS off I get 10.5 mpg(once I hit 5,000 miles I bet I’ll get up to 11 mpg to 11.5 mpg) as that’s what happened to my TRX. I hear everyone getting 12 to 15 on the PW but I bet that is with MDS on am guessing. For the past 10 years all the trucks I have had only get 12 mpg at best unless I do all highway driving then 15 to 16 mpg but most of my miles are a mix of city and highway.

from the sounds of it, you're goinig to be grossly overloaded. however i will say, these trucks are under-rated just due to the coil springs. i know a lot of people that just put bags on them and run em! the rear axle is the same as the regular 2500/3500 gasser. so it's more than capable.

While we didn't drive across a scale, the weight distribution was maxed out as the truck was 1 inch off the bump stops. And towing other loads close to 7000 pounds, I was nearly double the gas pedal input to get it moving and climb hills. So somewhere in the vicinity of 12,000 ish pounds is my guess. Respectfully disagree that you can get the best of both worlds regarding mileage and power. In my opinion, when you get to a point of towing, tires/lift, or just going from point A to B, you will just have to commit either way and just know that the other concerns just don’t matter. If you are going to tow don’t consider mpg except to gauge your vehicle’s health. If you are going with lift/tires then don’t consider mpg and power. If you are just going from A to B with the best mpg, then don’t get lift/tires or think you’re going to tow or charge up a mountain OR you will be disappointed. For me, I have a Ram 3500 HO and don’t care about mpg. But I can tow, IDK how much but 12K lbs going 65 mph up a 7% incline. Again, just my opinion.

@@Bigspoiledkid first of all, I was just having some fun with Justin (we have communicated several times before, he also provided valuable information before I ordered my powerwagon). With that said, own a 2021 PW and I have also owned 7 diesel trucks. Everyone who buys a PW knows, or at least should know good mileage should not be expected. If that's a concern, then maybe consider another vehicle. It's a purpose built truck...that can tow a bit as well. So, my point of "best of both worlds" was mostly a joke (did you notice the LOL)...however...the prospector model which is an offroad focused vehicle, does have a diesel (at least I've never seen one with a gas motor). So, to your respectful disagreement, I was simply pointing out, one can actually have an off-road focused truck, that can tow heavy and achieve better mpg than the PW. It's the same engine and transmission as the non power wagon 2500 and 3500, so honestly it's ok. I even asked my dealer and they said run it haha!

@@JustinKingOffroad Even with the extra 500 pound payload capacity that my Carli Suspension offers, I still feel and see a difference when I load it up...it dies feel like my 1500 as far a tow capacity...I think if it were me I'd get airbags with Daystar cradles......

@@JustinKingOffroad born and raised in NJ I grew up thinking east coast people suck at driving. Then I moved here to Gillette Wyoming and I can’t believe how much worse people drive in this part of the nation! No blinkers, no full stops at signs and red lights, turning into the wrong lane, leaving high beams on with oncoming traffic, not realizing you can turn on red with a full stop, not knowing who has the right of way, sooooooo many drive at night without lights on!!!!! It’s just purely awful. And South Dakota has the absolute worst drivers. And I’ve driven truck across 41 of the lower 48 and I’m impressed how bad South Dakotans are! Ha ha ha ha ha ha

I read that new vehicles will soon have to make 40mpg. How the hell there gonna get a power wagon or even a Jeep make 40mpg I have no idea.

Politicians don't want you to have a PW or jeep. They want you in chains. Driving an electric car that they can remote shut down because you didn't take your 11th booster shot.
@ChrisACiufo
@ChrisACiufo Жыл бұрын
It’s not possible. That’s why the fleet will go electric-if you only want 100 miles of range. If you need to tow, you can buy a rig for a while, but pay the EPA penalties for failing to meet the mpg goal. This is the same penalty FSA/Ram is already paying on the Hemi. And why it’s going away in the future. The takeaway? The future is grim. Hold onto your old truck and think fondly of those cars in Cuba.

The diesel is superior in the torque curve. It is worth it in my opinion, but If you don’t tow this weight often, the 6.4 is fine.

16:51 The roads are getting crazy these days. The Dashcam Lessons KZbin channel uploads about a dozen incidents like that everyday. The stupidest part is that most of the clips are submitted by road raging fools showing themselves doing stupid illegal crap like that. 🤦‍♂

Unfortunately it's not LE that control the unregistered vehicles in Colorado.. It's the laws that regulate what LE can and can not do with the unregistered motorist contacted..
