Zurhkaneh (Pahlevani and zoorkhaneh) is a kind of traditional Iranian power work out. I was invited to a suburb of Tehran to see the club exercise. The drums are so powerful and push everyone to go a little bit more.
Zurkhaneh combines martial arts, aerobic and some yoga moves too.
In the club I visited there were males of all ages but the most beautiful part was how the club supported each other. They greeted each other, caught each other if they were spinning out of control, handed out dry towels.
Clearly Zurkhaneh is a communal activity, building on the social structure of the neighborhood, rather than the individualistic workout found in Western gyms.

Impressive. I'm always thrilled to bits watching Zurkaneh workout and listening to the drummer. It reminds me so much of beloved Iran, which I toured two years ago. Iranians, actually Persians, are one of the nicest and most civilised people in the world.

For those who wonder why the spin, it's a training for head & balance,it was very important to get use to spins and fast turning as a melee warrior, it also improves one's balance. As a warrior in ancient times to do tactical maneuvers, to swing left and right without loosing your balance during melee was nessesary, since one warrior might be attached from front and behind constantly, if the head and body are not ready to spin back and fort ,it would be easy to get stabbed. you gotta spin so much so that once you stay you will not feel dizzy, they actually become good at that, Zurkhane warriors could sping for minutes and yet they are able to stand still afterwards.

For those who don’t know, Zurkhaneh sports (traditional Persian gym) has two aspects: one is the emphasis on chivalry, ethics, and noble conduct; the other is training for ancient warfare techniques. The wooden plank used for push-ups symbolizes a sword. The large weights that are spun around the shoulders represent a mace. The spinning movements, which come in various forms, are both a type of masculine dance and an exercise in focus and balance. There are also two large boards on which you lie down and move rhythmically in a specific manner; these boards symbolize shields. Finally, there is a heavy metal tool that you must lift above your head and move from side to side. This represents a bow, but it is made of metal to be heavier, helping to build strength for such movements. This sport has a history of over a thousand years.
