Solar, batteries, and backup whole house backup generator really is a great way to do it. I love the integration Enphase has on their system. I would love vehicle to home integration but Enphase doesn’t have to option yet. Not that I need it but will probably add it once it’s becomes available. The system works flawlessly and you never really run out of power in any situation.

Tom, a comment and a question. First, I saw your comment on BI that you're concentrating on energy infrastructure videos vs things like first drives, and this post shows why that's exactly the right way to go. No one I know of is covering this stuff like you, and it's really kind of the next frontier for the fast follower set. Great stuff. Question: isn't a very big issue for these systems, Ford included, the fact that there's no 3rd party standards-setting body defining how all this stuff should work together? So the manufacturers are all going their own way, and it locks you into a producer's specific solution even as your needs, and technology, change? I'd hate to spring for a system like this and be chained to always having a GM vehicle in the driveway. Or do I have this wrong? Also, thanks for the Bolt question. I was wondering the same thing.

I'm glad options are now available for using your EV to power your home in an emergency albeit the high cost. If I can just get a simple inverter that can just convert the DC to AC and I can decide what to do with it, that's all I need. I'm also hoping EV makers can make this universal (Big Wish). I'm still waiting for Rivian to get its act together on V2H system.

While still employed in years past, I managed to install rooftop solar, buy an EV, and add 2 Powerwalls to my system. However, now that I'm barely scraping by in retirement, I just don't have the funds anymore to invest in great products like these V2H devices. Well… when and if the grid goes down and then my Powerwalls have been drained completely, at least I will be able to tap into my EV's V2L to power only essential appliances like my 'fridge and freezer. That's about the best I'll be able to do.

At what point will these V2H systems be universal? Meaning I can plug an EV from any manufacturer into this GM home power system? Given the current climate of EV's and the drastic depreciation I don't see myself purchasing, I prefer to lease. So at the end of a 3 year lease with a Silverado or Blazer and shelling out all the money for this system what then? I am stuck only buying GM EV's at this point? These need to be open to all EV's not just brand specific before they are truly worth purchasing, at least in my view. I love the idea and would be a potential customer, but I don't know that I could commit until they are more universal.

My question is if you install this whole system for a GM vehicle, and then switch to a Ford or other brand that is fully V2H capable, is it possible to modify it to work with the new vehicle from another brand? Or would you have to buy and replace the entire system for the new vehicle? Seems like a big investment if it's the latter.

I have a problem that no one seems to be able to solve. Regarding charging a 2023 Cadillac Lyriq debut edition. I have both adapters. One for Tesla superchargers purchased from Cadillac and one for level two Tesla destination chargers, purchased from Lectron. Recently went to the winter parking garage at Mohegan Casino in Connecticut, where they have 20 new Tesla destination chargers. Tried to use the Lectron that I have previously used at a local hotel. It would not work. Was I supposed to use the level three adapter?

How will this system work with GM EVs when they have a native NACS port? The system will only have acces to either the DC power, or AC for charging, not both at the same time like CCS does.

It's REALLY hard to say. Every home is so drastically different with regard to access for wiring, distance to the service panel, and the system's capacity. You really need to have an estimate, but I would imagine the installation cost would start at around $3K and go up from there.

@ab-tf5fl
@ab-tf5fl 11 минут бұрын
Really like the idea, but I feel that the cost, at the moment is still too high. For this to really take off, the up-front cost of an EV-based power system needs to be cheaper than the cost of a gas generator, it needs to work with all EVs, even the cheapest models, and it needs to be compatible across all brands of cars. I think, at some point, it will happen. Today, it's not quite there yet.

How else would it get energy from the truck? Inverters convert DC to AC, so the connection to the truck has to be DC.

@bobjohnson4512 7 сағат бұрын
I think it is good the EV makers are working on powering a house from an EV but I would like to see more of an effort to work with the dozens of inverters and batteries that already exist. Today I can charge my solar system batteries from my Lightning for much less than Ford's or GM's proprietary system. It might not be as sophisticated but it works and will keep the lights on.

Why does the switch over take so long when you have attached storage, it should be milliseconds. I can understand when it’s only the truck because you may need to wake it up, but not when you have a 10 kWh battery attached.

Why can’t we use the vehicle power without outage
@patrickr9416
@patrickr9416 7 сағат бұрын
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughneyI was watching for this too, Tom. I’ve been talking to GM Energy about this, and it is not capable of using power from the car in a TOU model because power can only come from the car during an outage. Offsetting TOU only works with the home battery. The GM guy said it at least twice - that powering the house with the car when there is not an outage is not available yet. We were about to get a demo of car-to-home during the grid power cut at 22:20, but then moved on to other topics. I did see a change in the app at 23:45 when green power line started to go truck-to-house. However that was during the demo power outage. This is a pretty big fail for GM. With this system, when you also buy the powerbank, they are offering something that Tesla has been doing for about 10 years now. It’s not cutting edge at all. Their talk about spending so much time examining the use cases falls flat when they somehow didn’t support the obvious use case of seamlessly sending power back and forth between car and house to store more solar, optimize TOU, or just derive more value from an investment of possibly over 100k. And even if they add this capability later, the incoming federal administration might have eliminated all tax credits and other incentives which make this whole deal more affordable. It’s a fail on understanding value for the customer, on implementing established technology, or at the very least on timing. Your video, however, was perfectly timed. Thank you. Now I have clarity that I shouldn’t invest in this system. I’ll wait with my fingers crossed that it might be affordable, and more functional, later.

If I can't use the system to shift my usage of the grid to when power cost less, I will never recoup the cost of the system or get my utility (in Canada) to subsidize the system. Good initial effort, but not a viable option for wide adoption

It’s inexcusable for any electric vehicle to not have the built in capability to provide backup power during a home power outage. Looking especially at you Tesla - I don’t need a Powerwall when my car has a huge battery already. Every car should be able to do this, not just a couple of pickups with a bunch of extra electronics. Should just need a transfer switch for safety and the charger (with inverter) should handle the rest automatically.
@ab-tf5fl

Absolutely agree. Just had a power outage. Being able to sit in the car with the heat on definitely helped, as did using the car's USB ports to charge my cell phone. But, I would have much preferred to simply use the energy in the car's battery back to run the lights and heat pump for my actual living space.

It's too bad that none of this conforms to any standards, so it will ikely never work with any other EVs except for those GM models designed to work with this particular system. It is essentially proprietary, just like the Ford and Tesla systems are. People who invest this kind of money in a system like this want it to work with the EV thay own today as well as the EVs they will buy for the next 20 years, regardless of brand. The future of V2X needs to be non-proprietary to justify the investment in a system that will take decaades to break even.
