Just ran my pto generator for 6.5 days. Kept my house going. 13,000 watt ran a 5 ton a/c unit and two freezers and two refrigerators and lights, tv, etc. during the day. Ran two 2 ton a/c units and all the other stuff at night with my Kubota L3901. Wife was worried about the tractor, I was worried about the food and keeping the house cool in Central Louisiana in late August. Your video was right on the mark. @@sphill_edc Northern Tool is the company I bought it from. It was $1,000 several years ago. Have not checked the price recently. Also purchased the outside plug to connect to house. Had to also buy a power cord to connect it together. I built a 3-point hitch to mount it to tractor. You may want to mount it on a wheeled cart for easy moving. The one in video was a nice package.

I have an older Kubota and am looking at a Winco to do the same thing. Eric did you leave your tractor running the whole time? Refuel while running? Just curious as I am considering the same and don’t mind running a tractor - but can honestly say I have never run one 6 days straight. How did it do? How long did it take you to get used to it running non stop? Any concerns while you were doing it?

@@charlessavino7946 I have a new Kabota L3901 with about 100 hours. No problems with it nor any concerns. I ran it while I added fuel. I did disconnect a few times while I used the tractor for cleanup. I used it to carry limbs, etc. I would shut it down to check the oil. I would cut away from generator 4 or 5 hours during the day, but ran it all the other times. Good luck.

We have a 7kw pto generator(northern tools if you must know, total harmonic distortion very low, can runs sensitive electronics) connected to dedicated house circuits through a manual transfer switch. Typically it runs from 7am to about 11am for breakfast, showers, reading email, etc. then off until 5, runs until11pm. Fridge and freezer will stay cold with this schedule, we have led battery lights if needed, wood stove for heat, outages have been only in winter. 17pto hp tractor will use about 1/2 of six gallon tank for three days on this schedule. Tractor is available during late morning and all afternoon for work. Generator always starts. Has 30 amps at 220 volts, runs well pump, standard appliances, fans, window ac, probably whole house ac. All that we need.

"Generator always starts" Yeah, that's the big difference I see. You're running and maintaining your tractor engine all the time. If you have a separate generator engine, it's another maintenance item.

I'm considering a PTO generator (for power outages), but my current set up is two generators: I have a 3200 watt dual fuel inverter generator which can power all my household (800 sq foot) needs (except the well) at the rate of .19 gal of propane per hour (26 hours per 20 pound bottle). And a 220v generator, that I use for about 10 minutes a day to refill the 50 gal back up water tank, which uses 5 quarts of gasoline per hour. It sounds like the biggest difference is that I have two extra pieces of equipment to maintain and store.

The biggest benefit is gas generators that don't get stored correctly when being stored for years. So hurricane comes and you need your generator and it won't start its been sitting up for 2yrs fuel lines are cracked and carb needs a rebuild. I always try to do a bit of preventive maintenance but not everyone else does. During natural disasters diesel is typically a bit easier to come by as well. I really like the idea of a pto generator. One less gas motor I need to maintain and my L2501 isn't to loud and the motor makes its pto power/speed at a fairly low rpm. Only draw back is I use my tractor for storm damage cleanup but I imagine the house would be OK for a few hours without a generator.

When we had the BIG province (Quebec) wide power outage during the ice storm in Jan. 1998. Farmers that had generators were easily spotted. Their whole farm and home were all light up. The generators they used looked like they were built before the 2nd world war. Every night I passed they were always running and the lights were on. These are a necessity if you live in a power outage prone area. Excellent video Neil.

I cannot recommend Winco PTO operated generators enough. I have a 25 KW unit and after Hurricane Michael it ran for 28 days straight connected to my L3400. I had hot water, meals, air conditioning, and lights. If you have a tractor of any size you should have a PTO operated generator. I have a degree in electronics and have worked in power plants for over 40 years and I agree with Neal 100% regarding their suitability for both home and commercial use.

I don't usually comment on Messick video's, but watch them all. This one is 100% correct. We have 3 PTO generators here, run 3 houses with them, 20 to 30KW. I usually run them on my 200 hp 1000 rpm PTO shaft with a 540 adapter, tractor doesn't run very fast, the big fuel tanks last forever and I can run everything in the whole house if I wanted without issues and have juice left. My dad was always hung up about putting hours on a tractor, so he had a portable generator at his house...............It wasn't big enough to run much of anything, sucked up alot of gas, and since it was gas, even with treated fuel it still often had carb issues. No thanks. I seems most people who bash the PTO generator never had one.

I live in California. Last year we had planned power outages caused by poorly maintained power lines in high fire areas. Power was off for days. Gas stations had no power so you couldn't get gas. I now have a pto generator because I live in dairyland. There are 1000s of gallons of diesel in gravity tanks at neighbors. I also store around 30 gallons myself since diesel is more stable than gas for storage.

I have had an 8K Winco since the early 90's. Works every time I need it. The best thing is that I know that my 4710 Kubota is going to crank where the little gas engine that hasn't been used in 2-3 years isn't going to when I need it. I heartily recommend one.

And you are using far less fuel than using gasoline/propane/natural gas, and diesel is far safer for the environment (when used in a properly maintained tractor) than gasoline!

I used a Lincoln 8 welder/generator for years , they have extra large fuel tanks for extended run time does double duty as a portable dc welder and even has a idle down feature built in to save gas , at night it will power a few small lights just at idle but rev up as soon as it sees more demand such as a well pump,freezer etc. And they make diesel models too.

I don't know about other tractor models but I know a lot about the small engine kubota's working on the r&d field testing them tens of thousands of hours. He's absolutely right the rest of the tractor will fall apart around it except for the engine. I've seen people remove the air filters from them and drive them for a thousand hours before they have problems with no filter.

We have a 540 rpm 65kw/80kw surge one for our dairy farm, run the tractor wide open in 540 when running everything in the barn at chore time, and stop and shift the tractor into 1000 rpm gear overnight, and run the engine around 1100 or 1200 in low load conditions overnight to keep 540 rpm and lower fuel consumption.

A PTO generator is a very good investment if you've got a lot of stuff that needs power. Like a garage, barn or something. We have a bigger generator to go behind the Ford 5000 and it has come in handy.

Video is spot on. Back in 04 bought a jd2210 new. 09 comes ice storm no elc for 3days . Ran my 13kw PTO gen 24/7. But I'm totally elc so no hot eayer or elc stove. But elc heaters, 110 skillet thanks to my farmer friends diesel was ample. PTO is the only way to go. We live in a small town 1500 tops people would drive by how do you have elc I would say listen the little princess is running my generator

I have a 25kw winco that I have used twice now for a week each time to run my whole house in Fl after hurricanes. Thats 2 HW heaters and a 4ton and 2ton AC. They work fantastic, I did use a lot of diesel though but on the farm I have a 800gal tank so no biggie. I did turn down the system for the night just to give the tractor a break so it would not run 24/7 for a week. The cost is very reasonable to for the Winco's.

But, IF you had a crappy generac PROPANE 25KW generator, you'd have spent far more (25%) money to fuel it than what you spent in diesel, and the generac's air-cooled engine runs HOT and isn't designed to run as many hours as the diesel engine!

One really big advantage of having a battery backed off-grid solar power system is that you can run a generator like this for a couple of hours and charge the battery all the way up. Then your tractor is available the rest of the day and you don't have the noise. Without a battery, most of the power from the generator is just being wasted and your wasting gas or diesel or propane. Now if the sun comes out, then you don't need a generator at all!

Technically, you could just use the tractor's alternator and batteries to charge the battery packs if you have a 12 volt battery system.

If I ever get a BX this type of generator would be great, no need to deal with maintaining an engine that isn't used often, easy hookup to quickly get power where needed, and those "portable" generators aren't really that portable when you have to lug them around you quickly realize how heavy they are, especially one that is large enough to actually use as a backup generator for a home. Not sure what people would be so negative about this type of generator for, that is unless they don't have a tractor LOL. I'd think if you got a tractor sitting around your property and you need power, that PTO generator would be great.

You really need to run through a power out scenario to decide which configuration would work best for you. In most cases the portable generator is on wheels and you simply wheel it outside, plug in the feed line and you're up and running. I can have mine connected and running in less than 10-mins. With the tractor you have to go out to the barn, garage, shed or wherever you store the tractor... wheel over the PTO generator and get it hooked up. Then start the tractor and drive it to the house and find a place to park it so you can get your feed line connected. Connect your load, throttle up to wide-open and now you have the tractor screaming away outside your window at wide open throttle. It just makes no sense. PTO generators sound like a good idea until you've been through a couple extended outages... maybe during an ice storm or hurricane-like winds. I can protect my little portable generator from the elements. I can't do so easily for the tractor and PTO generator sitting out in the driveway or yard. I won't even mention the risk of theft of an unattended running tractor.

@@eosjoe565 I'd have to go out to the shop, shed, barn, back 40, or wherever I store the generator and lug it across the property I haven't seen anyone that keeps their "Portable" generator hooked up to the house 24/7 so you'd have to go lug that thing all over the place too...I'd rather jump on the tractor and hookup the generator that way than lug around a not so portable generator. For that kind of money though I'd just have a standby generator installed, then I don't have to do anything, except reset all the clocks, even with automatic transfer switches you still lose power for a couple seconds. I've thought about a standby generator but we don't have enough power outages to justify having one, and it is 1 more engine to maintain. I had a portable generator, yeah when you get one that is large enough to actually power your house they aren't portable, maybe on wheels but they're not something you'd just drag around your property they're heavy, they're cumbersome, and they have to be maintained. I got rid of my generator because I never used it enough to justify keeping it and the power outages that we have where I live don't bother me, sometimes its nice to just sit back and relax and not have to work LOL. A PTO generator would make far more sense if you already have a tractor and you don't use it 24/7, and most people don't...they're tractors sit more than they are used, so having a Generator that you can power off a tractor would justify having the tractor around that only gets used a couple times a month. You don't need a tractor to clean up storm damage, you need a chainsaw and time. So the tractor can sit and keep your house powered while you are cutting up the tree that fell on your house, that is if it didn't crush your pretty tractor too.

You run into the same issue as the smaller portable units, if your running a smaller tractor, when your wife turn on the oven and decides she needs to dry clothes too, the rpm drop kicks the breaker or burns something up. On the other end, if you have to big of a tractor, you dont have the loading issues but you run the risk of wet stacking and you are using a high dollar machine to do an $800 generator's job...They are handy though.

The diesel tractor pto generator is far QUIETER than a gasoline powered portable, it uses far LESS fuel than the gasoline portable (and is better for the environment), diesel IS FAR EASIER to procure because everyone else is buying up all of the gasoline to run their "noisy, inefficient, gashog" generators. The diesel engine also lasts far longer than the air-cooled gas engine, and diesel is far safer to store in your garage than gasoline because diesel's fumes don't "go BOOM!" as gasoline can, and diesel can be stored far longer than gasoline before it goes bad! It's a no-brainer for this countryboy! The diesel is the way to go!

Got a 12 kw baumalight generator I run off my tractor also made a frame to hold the welder and a air compressor powers the house and shop no problem on our small farm and also makes in field repairs easy plus i can have power anywhere I need it

This is a reply to multiple comments asking about rpm control. As for durability, I have serviced mobile and stationary units with the same engines that have upwards of 9 thousand hrs. Just the regular maintenance religiously. As long as your loading stays in your hp rating, the governor on the engine will hold the rpm steady. The only time it would vary, a miniscule time, is catching or shedding a load. This is called droop and surge. The only time this would become critical is when coming close to the maximum load vs available hp ratio. Once that is exceeded, the governor will just go to limit with the engine bogging down. This applies to all generators, not just pto driven. The more sophisticated units will shed load by tripping breakers at the least or by canbus to a load center that will start switching loads off by priority. The math work is critical!

This 7kw setup runs our 220 v well jet pump without any problems. It’s oversized for us but 7 kw was the smallest pto generator available. I looked into a backup gasoline or dual fuel generator and was horrified at the fuel consumption numbers. Best thing is to reduce every load( get the most efficient appliances available and turn off everything that’s not essential), then select the generator. .

You are correct that a small tractor driven diesel generator is far more fuel efficient than a propane or gasoline driven generator, and is far better built as well!

I have alittle over 1000hr on a 30kw unit I have since sold. I had it repaired under warranty, the top gear grenaded in it. My experience was generally good but a few things to note. You must keep a mindful eye on gearbox oil/seals. They are very loud/ have a whine, get the 4 pole/1800rpm version. If you are using a much larger tractor than your power requirements, be wary of wet stacking. I would probably buy another if I needed backup power, but for long duration running the noise is irritating. And fuel economy suffers because instead of being linked directly to the generator, like a genset, it instead goes through the tractors transmission. So you go from 1800rpm- tractor transmission- 540 rpm- pto gen's gearbox- 1800rpm. This turns more of your fuel into heat and alot of noise. Edit to amend: We had almost 3000 hours on that 25kw mated to a ford 5600. It had the gearbox replaced under warranty once and It blew the diodes once. It was pretty tough for what I paid for it but we have settled on a nice mep803a, got it for $3500 used and the pto unit cost me $2700 new so its a much better deal.

I totally agree with you about going from engine RPM through the transmission to 540 then back up to 1800 even though it’s not a generator we have on our farm a PTO driven water pump and last season I was pumping water from one pond through a 650 foot long 1-1/2 inch line filling another pond for irrigation purposes and it was running for two 8 hour periods I burned through 2 tanks of diesel and only filled the other pond 3/8-1/2 full The next day that pond was empty again and I said this is useless I’m not using that PTO pump for the amount of time and fuel and stress on the tractor plus taking up a valuable tractor that I could be using in the fields! I am designing up a plan to build a direct shaft diesel powered water pump too then pump through a 3 inch pipe and the pump can be fired up anytime I need water in the other pond and it doesn’t take the tractor!

@@mainelyelectric IF your tractor is large enough, shift the PTO to the 1000 RPM setting and "throttle down" the engine so the PTO runs around 540. It's far more quiet, uses far less fuel, and pumps the same amount of water!

Iv always like the thought of a pto gen you your tractor is used more often then a stand alone gen where the fuel can go bad sitting and plug up the carburetor and then it won’t start when time comes to needing it.

i have a small 4kw gas unit i have had since before i bought my tractor. i am going to replace it in the next couple of years. im leaning towards on of these units, only issue being if i had to use it during a snow storm i would have to detact the generator and hook up the snowblower and go back to the generator. i have a rear mount snowblower. one more thing to add........ THIS application greatly benefits from the larger engines offered in the BX. in this video he uses a BX1880, a BX2380 would be able to run more current maybe 10KW, a BX2360 might possibly have enough oopmh to run this nearly at full capacity. i have a BX2350, 23hp and i believe would work well with one of these units.

I'm an electrician and an owner of a Winco generator that my father who also is an electrician bought new 30+ years ago. Not that it is a bad choice, but the automatic transfer generators are hard to beat. He bought a automatic transfer generator to replace the PTO driven one. I would agree with the PTO driven generator to bring power out where there is none. We have used it multiple times on new jobsites.

One point he missed is that you do not need to run the generator 24 hours per day. Run it for an hour to heat or cool the house and then off for 40 minutes or more depending on the climate. You only need to maintain the house temp and refrigerator temp. Remember, you have to ration your fuel. The local gas/diesel pump won't pump during a power outage. Always keep you tractor near full of fuel and keep at least 10 gallons on hand in storage cans. Don't want to be caught with an empty tank and no fuel when the power goes out.

Good video Neil. My only problem with tractor driven generators is since I only have one tractor, many times the cause of no power is storm damage. As others have stated the tractor needs to be available for other work. That’s why I have a large portable generator and transfer switch on my house

That's why you have a SMALL prrtable to run just the basics while the tractor is being used for other stuff (you won't be inside so the A/C won't need to run), and when you get ready to "relax", hook up the PTO one and use FAR LESS fuel!

As stated on my first reply, a rough estimate for 24-27 hours was about 3 gallons. If you google search, you can find gallons per hour per kw per hp generated by small tractors. I looked up for my Kubota BX23 but I think just searching for fuel usage per hp per kw will get you an answer.

A tractor generator is the only way to go. Your tractor is being used and the carburetor is not stopped up. When you pull the generator out like most gas generators, it's a no-brainer to only run it off your PTO and you don't have to worry about another engine or any other things running, just hook it up. And there's your power ! And the gen in the video has wheels to roll it in and out of the barn without pulling you back out dragging out a big gen with a motor hooked to it !!

I have a B2650 with the mid PTO that is set up for a snowblower going all the way to the front I was thinking of building some sort of generator that would run off of that shaft even though the maximum speed of that shaft is 2600 RPMs when you are running the snowblower but you could possibly run a smaller generator head direct off that shaft when the blower is not attached!

you could also do a belt drive with different sized pulleys to bring that 2600rpm up to 3600 to run a belt drive generator, OR do different pulleys that would slow down the output speed to run the 540 rpm pto generator.

the only downside for residential customers is leaving your tractor sitting outside running during a power outage, especially at night... and someone walks up and drives your tractor away... worst case scenario at least. unless you chain your tractor to a tree or etc... or have a gated yard. those wincos are 100 times better than any big box store generator

I mean people can walk up to your tractor during the night when its parked wherever you store it and drive away with it too, so there's no difference in it sitting out powering your generator, or sitting in a shed. Really, if someone wants your tractor they're going to take it regardless where you have it parked.

When you have a variable load, what keeps the PTO RPM constant? Do the small tractors have the same feature as the larger ones that allow tractor throttle to maintain a specific PTO speed?

Nothing, I was going to make the same comment. I think that is why he is way over quoting the hp to KWs conversion. To keep a relatively constant speed you have to keep the load under the actual capability quite a bit so that the engine does not slow a lot at the current throttle position. I really could not recommend one of these without a tractor that can maintain a constant pto speed. My family used to have a 15KW generator like this that didn't have speed control. Every time you put a big load on it, you would have to go out and ajust the trottle till the frequency was back to 60hz. We tended to damage electronics when a load would drop off, and the voltage would surge. It would be fine for a big pump or similar load that you set once and let run for hours. Not so great for a home where the load varies frequently., and there are sensitive electronics. They should really put switching eletronics in these to give a contant output voltage and frequency regardless of engine speed, and only vary the current. I have only ever seen that on the little 2KW units though.

@@court2379 You nailed it, these put out clean power at constant load, the rpm fluctuations make it dirty though. An inverter style unit that you could set tractor at 1200rpm for night time, low load and lower noise, and 1800rpm for daytime higher loads would be much more practical.

20,000-30,000 out of these little diesels is not unheard of in the right application. Generally in equipment the engine is the last thing to wear out.

But you are not just running the engine on the tractor. You are turning everything except the axles. Alternator, hydraulic pump, hydrostatic transmission, basically the entire drive train between the engine and PTO output shaft. Portable generators are cheap, they are easy to hookup and easy to shelter from the weather. My current portable generator is 8 years old and has provided power through countless power outages. The worst was two winters ago during the pre-dawn hours when the temperature was 0-degrees F. It took me less than 10-mins to power up the generator and have whole-house power restored. Can you imagine going to the barn and dragging out the tractor and PTO generator under those conditions? My generator current has about 200 hrs on it and I expect it to last for many years to come.

The motor in those smaller BX/B series kubotas and are usually the same engine you will find in a dedicated diesel generator like the Kubota Low Boy and bigger industrial branded generators and welders, not to mention mini excavators and skid loaders so they are happy to run at constant rpm all day. if your really trying to keep the hrs off your tractor for resale why did you by one in the first place?

This could solve a problem I have with my current back up generator. It isn't supposed to be out in the rain. My L2501 can run in the rain. Can this generator be used outside while it is raining. That plus a 30A twist lock would be enough to get me running during the storm rather than after.

As for "back up power for the home" maybe good as back up power for back up power but one would need to see how the entire system tests out and in fact connects first before these claims can be valid. A straight up two stroke outboard motor is still better tho...properly set up of course..

PTO driven generators have been around for many decades. Back in the 60's Deere even used to make one that ran off the mule drive on small garden tractors.

One problem I see is that now my tractor is tied up to the generator. Now I can’t use the tractor to help clean up any storm damage, which is most likely what caused my power outage to begin with. Now if I was in California dealing with rolling blackouts, I guess that would be a different story.

That and it didn't have a 220V output so wasn't exactly much use for a backup generator to run anything you'd actually need during an extended power outage like a well pump, water heater, and other 220V stuff.

So after watching this video and a few from winco, I think I'm going to go ahead and buy one of these generators. My thinking is pour a concrete pad, build a 6x6x6 building and set it up like a stand by generator. So the electrical side will already be ready to go if needed. Have a motor space heater set up to keep moisture away when I have power like normal. Then have a vent fan tied to the generator side when it is running to keep the building cool. Basically take my M7040 and back it up to the building, hook up the pto, and good to go. This way the generator is out of the weather. Only thing I am trying to figure out is the AVR and how is my tractor going to increase RPMs when a larger load like AC or well pump kicks on?

@@MessicksEquip and the engines do have a governor that can make nearly instataneous small adjustments in the fuel to keep the voltage where it belongs. That's why you'll hear a light, short "grunt" when a large motor starts...that's the load on the tractor and the governor quickly making the necessary adjustments as needed.

So I have a question about the 2hp per kw recommendation: I have two Kubota tractors; one is a 95 hp and the other is a 26hp (19.5 hp at the PTO), and I'm wondering about what the PTO recommendation really means? Does it really mean that it takes of 2 hp per kw to produce the rated amount of power; therefore you could in fact use a smaller tractor to run a larger generator, but you would be limited to a LOWER kw than the generator is rated for? Most of the time I could make due with a lower kw rated generator (using the smaller tractor, with a lower fuel burn), but I also have the larger tractor for those times that I need the larger generator (say, running a remote welder, or powering an entire farm during a extended power outage). The larger the demand, the larger the power requirement to produce it. Conversely, less demand requires less hp. And it is important to remember that higher fuel burns will determine how long you can use the generator based on your available fuel.

You are correct. They have some advantages of a large generator on a small tractor. One is that the larger mass of the generator helps keep the generator spinning and you don't get as much of a dip in power during a surge like a large pump kicking on. You burn less fuel also.

I’m looking into getting a generator head to run off of a tractor. I have neither yet, but I have a question that’s pretty generic that hopefully someone can answer. Take a regular generator you buy at the store for example. When you start the engine, it runs at a constant 3600rpm usually. Until a big load hits it. When a big power demand hits it, it throttles up for a second to keep up with the demand. How would this work on an independent tractor/generator setup? Do you just need a high enough horsepower tractor to where it just lugs for a second then catches up?

I share your opinion. I don't know why someone would buy a gen with a motor and only use it 2 times every 5 years when they have a tractor they can run one off of. You have longer run time as well as not having to change the oil every 3 days like on portable gens.

and the diesel unit is more fuel efficient, and diesel is easier to get during storms because nearly everyone is burning gasoline in their autos while searching for gasoline for their inefficient gasoline generators!

How long will a tank of fuel last is going to depend on the load on the generator. If you go look at a Kubota whole house generator that is a 22 KW at 3/4 load is going to burn roughly 1 gallon per hour. I have an MX-5100 and I'm planning on doing a 22KW generator before this next winter that's why I've been researching it everything I'm saying it says about 1:00 to 1.1 gallon per hour on the stand by generators most of them are running a 2.2 l Kubota motor which is a 45 horse

Lots of variables in that. How's it been used, how's the maintenance been on it, etc. play a major role in how long an engine will last. I'm guessing 20k hours wouldn't be unheard of in a diesel tractor engine and still going strong long after....but again maintenance and the way its treated is a huge factor.

Depends on how it was used. On a machine that has ran a hammer, 3000hrs is worn out, it is a tough environment. On a mid 90's john deere tractor that mows hay, alittle over 10,000hrs its done, needs new liners/pistons plus the rest of the tractor needs attention. Have a ford 5600 with 5000hrs and it is worn out front to back. Had a ford 1720 with 3400hrs that was knocking. Seen light plants and generators with 10k hours and were still humming along fairly well, no idea if they had been repowered. It really depends, you need to look at the unit as a whole if buying used and really listen to it run. I will say that 30k is optimistic, even if its a stationary type unit that is kept out of the dust.

What's in your car and what's in your tractor are entirely different. What he said is 100% accurate. You know that older guy that has a 1960's deere with a bunch of leaks and an engine that runs just fine? That's how it works. Fluid seals will wear out LONG before a tractor engine that got good (not the cheap stuff) oil and filters at the right time. Most of those diesels are sleeved as well, so if you do live long enough to see your tractor engine wear out, you throw new sleeves and pistons in it and you're ready to go. MIGHT have to rebuild an injection pump, but the baby you took a picture of in the tractor seat when you brought it home will probably be 40 when that happens.

It’s all about how they are used. The stationary generators or refrigeration units on trailers are about the easiest loads for a diesel. Usually constant rpm & no shock loads. Hence the insane hours you can get out of them.

After watching this video I'm very interested, but it just occurred to me that my Kubota BX25 shuts off if the PTO is engaged and the driver leaves the seat. I'm guessing there is a work around- "sack of potatoes" in the seat?

I live in a rural NE county and see many of these generators mounted on concrete pads on the outside of dairy farm barns. After we suffered a 10-day power outage due to a weird rain, sleet, wind storm in the middle of winter, many homeowners were scrambling to buy portable generators. I finally managed to borrow one and pig-tailed it into my clothes dryer electric receptacle. Worked like a charm. But it got me wondering just why automobiles couldn't be configured to spin those same dairy farm generators using some sort of PTO set up for such emergencies without resorting to the "Green Acres" belt-driven old pickup on blocks with tire removed setup. Cost prohibitive? Or a policy issue due to insurance costs due to accidents? Just seemed crazy that one couldn't keep their family warm and lit during an emergency using a high-powered combustion engine running at idle, or revved a bit. Why no PTOs on automobiles?

You have to over-size your tractor to make it work. If you have a smaller tractor you may have to adjust the speed up some before running the dryer and the oven, it is doable. Some tractors have a better governor system that would help too.

Less than 535 or more than 544 PTO rpm and the AC power frequency is out of spec. A mechanical governor is not precise enough for this under all load conditions.

Precisely the opposite - inverter gensets are very fuel efficient, but consumer-level inverters are rather noisy. Big spinning iron is very clean provided you can keep constant RPM. Buying a much bigger unit than you need will add some mechanical inertia that will smooth out voltage and frequency. With that said, you'd be surprised what you can get away with especially for standby applications. Just remember to specify for Volt-Amps, not watts. They're the same for DC, but they're different for AC, and it can make a very big difference. A square wave inverter, for instance, will need to be severely "oversized", while a true sine wave inverter solves that problem right there.

Remember, when the power is out you may need the tractor for fallen tree cleanup, cutting ditches during hard rains or flooding, etc.... Hope it's not sitting there humming away to power the fridge. Better off with a dedicated generator or welder generator IMO, I have both. I have lots of heavy equipment and don't want a pto generator

A PTO generator as an emergency whole house generator just doesn't make any sense. The last thing I want to have is my tractor sitting out in the yard running wide-open for what could be a couple days in the rain, snow, ice or whatever other nasty weather is happening. I would much rather have it available for any needed storm cleanup duties. Meanwhile, my little $800 8KW portable generator is under shelter running the whole house just fine and using very little fuel doing it. PTO generators certainly have their place - but whole house power isn't one of them.

Maybe that's your situation, like mine we have multiple tractors. The tractor I put on the generator lacks a loader and is is much more efficient then a gas generator. The tractor on the generator couldn't care less if I run it 2 hours or 20 hours, it's only purpose is to work and has done so fabulously for 60yrs already. A gas generator you have to change the oil every 30hrs, where the tractor runs much longer between oil changes because of less heat and more capacity. With modern gasoline also, it is hard to store where as the diesel my tractors use is easily stored.

That is probably the most practical use of a PTO generator on a farm. You can tow it anywhere on the property and have the power that you need. Then again, I do the same thing with my portable generator. I haul it around with my tractor to power my welder and other power tools. I have also loaded it onto my small landscape trailer for remote welding jobs.

For some sizes the price of a PTO unit is not any lower than a gas or propane unit. Add in the fact that the tractor may often be needed to clean up after storms (the cause of many outages in the first place) and the reality that the tractor does not compensate for any changes in load like a self powered unit will. And lets face it - Tractor hours impact tractor resale.
