I ran with the cigarette adapter for a few years and finally threw in the towel for a hardwire setup. Definitely worth the sweating, swearing, and busted knuckles.

All my personal vehicles are hard wired, but I still need the cigarette adapter for rental cars, so the USB adapter is probably good to have.

Yeah pin 16. I wonder if the voltage drop is what triggered the RDs to turn off, not the power turning off.

I like the OBDII port. It's always easy to run the wire under the steering wheel, and don't have to mess with the mirror tap crap, or run to a fuse box which are now underhood or in the trunk.

Comparing to matches, pocket lighters today are much more useful, especially if you get the jet ones. So, what used to be useful 40 years ago, now is obsolete.

Most vehicles today have a top-center mounted unit (be it for cameras, or other driver assist things). My question is just "why can't they put a few usb ports there so we can use those for power instead of having to find something to tap into, or snake a cable all the way down to a fuse block, or USB port?" Is it really that difficult or costly? 😅

I mean, I’m glad some of these companies are finally coming to terms with technology in new cars. And I’m not saying everybody has a new car but looking to what is current not cigarette lighters which in my opinion is a legacy product. I don’t understand why they make this so complicated. These companies don’t really think forwardly do they,? looking ahead, not back. Why does not every company have the option to power your radar detector via USB-C which is the current and new standard of practically every current Cell Phone maker. I don’t wanna carry around a very bulky cigarette lighter as I move cars.

@R3TR0R4V38 күн бұрын
I'd just call it a 12v plug, rather than a "cigarette lighter".. It has many more uses than just lighting ciggies. 😜 I'd be pissed if my new car didn't come with one, like what are you going to do if you have a tire low on air and need to plug in an air compressor? That's some BS. I have my Uniden r7 hardwired, but I'd would gladly go back to the 12v plug as it buys you an additional USB A port, and a mute button. 😎

The auxiliary power ports (USB and cigarette lighter) may have constant power, or they may be ignition-only. That can almost always be changed by simply moving their power source to a different fuse in the box. No wire cutting required, jusf change what they are plugged in to.
@straightpipediesel7 күн бұрын
That's generally an American car thing. It's because they put a relay in to do retained accessory power, the fuse actually switches the control signal to the relay between the RAP bus and always-on. Japanese cars, with their tradition of having the least moving parts possible, wouldn't dream of putting an extra high-power relay in, thereby requiring you to do wiring work.

Do NOT use an OBD plug as a power source for these items, you are asking for trouble. I've seen plenty of the readers for codes so you can use your phone to monitor telemetry and diagnose codes at your convenience cause issues.
@VortexRadar8 күн бұрын
Yes some people have reported issues doing that, through from what I’ve seen it’s not very widespread, particularly with adapters that only draw power and don’t tap into the Canbus the way the code readers you mention do. Please correct me if I’m wrong though.
@leonzwrx7 күн бұрын
Crazy they use OBD2 cables. Any automotive professional will tell you those ports are not meant to be used all the time and car manufacturers don't love this idea either, there might be some issues with factory warranties in case something happens to the electrical system, so be careful
@VortexRadar7 күн бұрын
From what I understand, those issues usually stem from devices that interact with the Canbus system. RDs and dashcams usually only need power, and they’re fairly low power draw, so they wouldn’t cause the same issues as something like a Bluetooth code reader. Is that not the case?
@straightpipediesel7 күн бұрын
Most OBD II/DLC power supplies are just a fuse to the battery. If not, they share with dirty loads like cigarette outlets, dome lights, power seats.
@tl61378 күн бұрын
Since USB type A is low amps, that would be useless without decent conversion now days for the type of power, accessories demand these days. Type C is just a cheap excuse for car manufacturers to show you have a "modern connection". However since type c looks to be the common denominator for the next 20 years, car manufactures should be installing the much more useful type C with PD then you can power most of what your bring in your car. They should just up their game and show people it is worth while to spend 2 x - 3x more for the same car than 5 years ago. Same goes with the cheap chinese products which are actually struggling from the same 2x-3x price point issues, in other words are not cheap anymore.
@straightpipediesel2 күн бұрын
Type C is more expensive to put in itself. It's more durable, rated for twice the number of connector cycles and doesn't have the bendy metal springs, and that ultimately reduces warranty costs, which is why they sprang up so rapidly.

Hi i wanted to see if we can work together on testing detectors and band frequencies in real Life situations I’m a commercial truck driver and currently am using a uniden r8 and I have built up many different frequencies and gathered a lot of data on what bands are being used based off my personal observations. I know that it’s illegal for me to have them in a commercial vehicle, but frankly, I don’t care. I can send you videos to your email and I can also send you a copy of all of the band frequencies I’ve encountered state by state so what do you think? Would you like to work together with me so that we can help the community as a whole if you’re interested privately I can send you a copy of my CDL license and maybe we can work something out this way everyone has relevant information across the board and across the country
