So I'm guessing the bass line on Slam was Chyskillz playing on a synth?? The production on the whole album is just perfect, grimy but also tight and crisp, and the jazz samples really smooth it out just enough. I think the album, and especially SLAM, did much to make gangsta rap more acceptable to the mainstream, much like Black Sabbath and Led Zepp did for heavy metal in the 70s. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Slam is very peculiar in that it doesn't contain a single curse word... Onyx was smart, they made the album for the streets but knew how to make a radio hit too. I remember hearing Slam in regular rotation on a local top 40 station in Abingdon VA (probably one of the least "gangsta" towns in America, haha) and this one song was one of my first times being exposed to hip hop, the spark that lit my interest in 90s hip-hop. A lot of people owe their careers to Sticky and Onyx.

Zoomers hate Onyx because they presented very masculine, had an intense bass drum, kick and snare boom bap sound and they had actually melody infused into their music via great samples. Oh, and they hate that their flow was understandable and not mumbled.
