Hi from Spain. Could you help me? I just swap the tf999 to ax15 in my old 4.0l 91 YJ and now I don't have sparks in my plugs...I think that the problem is in the CSP, but is new (part number 56027866AB , buy in amazon )... the YJ Works perfect before the swap at morning. what do you think about it? Problem in the CSP, is different the PCM Between auto 4.0 and manual YJ...or anything. THANKS FOR ADVANCE, thanks for the re-clocking template and sorry for my language blunders.

Great video it will help a lot of folks! Just a point of information, a bad crankshaft position sensor will shut the engine down when it's running and will not start when you attempt to start it back up, it shuts down spark. Sometimes it will restart after the engine cools down, but will shut down once the engine warms up again. A camshaft position sensor will allow the engine to run until you shut it off, and then will not start up again, it shuts down the fuel system. So if your Jeep shuts down abruptly and won't start back up with no spark, it's most likely a crankshaft position sensor, and if you park your Jeep and the next time you go to start it and it won't start up but you have spark, and the fuel pump doesn't run when you turn the key on, it's most likely a camshaft position sensor that's inside the distributor housing.

Thanks guy. I've got three Jeeps, CJ7, Cheokee, JK Wrangler. I once twisted wrenches on cars and trucks before I did the same on aircraft for 30+ years. I got way behind the power curve going from the newer cars/trucks/Jeeps from turbine engines. Way different technology. Your videos bring me up to this "new" technology for me. Oh yeah. I'm 77 and still cranking.

There are 2 sensors that will prevent them from starting. Crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor. If I understand what you are describing as it just randomly shutting off, that is typically the crankshaft position sensor. Good luck, hope you get it fixed!! Have a great day!

I just viewed your video tonight and found it to be of great help and of course I also signed up. Thanks for all the information and the way you put it out, very easy to understand too. I just acquired a non-running 91 Laredo, 4.0L, with the AW4 from a family member who couldn't get it started after last driving it a year ago. He put in a new fuel pump and the injectors are getting fuel. He put in new plugs and told me it was getting spark. I've recently installed a new N.S.S. safety switch and it cranks over in park and neutral, but no start. I will be checking out the CPS in the morning to see if its good, but based on all my reading and viewing, I think it might be the CPS or Coil. Manny Thanks. Tio AL.
@pauleinerson57457 жыл бұрын
When he tests the CPS in ohms and says it should have no resistance, the meter shows 1, and no resistance should show 0.0 When I bought a new CPS for my 4.0, it read 0.0 ohms, same as the one I removed after viewing this video. It turned out not to be the CPS but my Coil that gave me a false reading looking good, when I tested it, before researching additional reasons for the no-spark and found this video. The video did give some really good advice to be careful not dropping the CPS bolts in to the Bellhousing.
@Poweraddicts7 жыл бұрын
No, Actually there is no fault in the video. The reading is correct. If you were watching the meter it stays at "1" all the time with the leads "not touching" anything. When I touch the leads together it then went to almost 0, just measuring the resistance of the leads themselves. What I was saying in the video, there should be no change at all in the meter reading and there wasn't. The display in the meter never changed as it shouldn't when reading across pins B and C. I'm reading and quoting this straight from the Chrysler service manual as I type this ... "Place an ohm meter across terminals B and C. The meter reading should be open (no resistance). Replace sensor if a low resistance is indicated". The part where is says "The meter reading should be open" means an open circuit, as in, there should be NO change in the meters reading and again, there wasn't. Yes, I've measured sensors after releasing this video that also read 0.0 and the sensor still worked. But technically, the meter should read the sensor just like it is when its turned on with the leads touching nothing. This video will soon be 3 years old. That Crank sensor is the same sensor I'm still running today. No issues with the sensor or the video. Coils can be finicky testing them. Sometimes it depends on whether the coil is hot, warm or cold as to if it test good or bad. Crank position sensors can be tricky as well to diagnose. About 95% of the time when a crank sensor fails .. its done and not coming back to life. I know of a Cherokee that has had 2 Crank sensors changed out. Each time when the engine cooled it would start up and run till the engine got hot ... then .. fall on its face again. Testing the Crank sensor after the engine cooled enough to touch, it tested good be cause is was cooled down. The symptoms at this point says that the coil could be the issue. Tested the coil, it tested good because it had cooled down. Swapped in a known good coil, still fell on its face after getting hot. Swapped in another Crank sensor ran for over a year trouble free. When it acted up again showing the same symptoms, we swapped a crank sensor in a all was good again. Glad you got your ride going! Have a great day :-)

I'm confused - the video shows the round plug & you are testing across B & C - then you say that the round was replaced with a flat plug - A B C - then you say "you want the 2 outside poles" - does that mean test A & C on the flat plug? also, what is the 3rd pole? is it the power supply? & what voltage should it be?

Thanks for this video. I have a 1988 Cherokee that the crankshaft position sensor wire hit the exhaust manifold & melted. I barely got it home. Hey Drew! - I'm new to Jeep World having recently inherited a '90 Cherokee. I'm a mechanic wanna' be and (sure enough!) when doing my first Jeep tune-up managed to twist off the hold down screw on the distributor cap. SO....if there are any great tips on how to get the distributor back in CORRECTLY the 1st time , that'd be great. The vehicle runs but idles roughly after warm up. I heard a read a MILLION reasons why but have resolved to replacing each component that could be the culprit until I get it right. Don't know what else to do! The next potential culprit is CPS. and NOW, after watching your vid, I have a clue what I am doing AND WHY!!!The WHY is a big deal with me. When I "get" why it works or doesn't I seem more confident in what I am doing. Anyway, Thanks for taking time to 'splain stuff to us old "new" Jeep guys, keep up the good work, Man, you ARE appreciated!

+Bill Evans Thats without a doubt one video I need to do. Kinda hard to explain without showing it. Basically get number 1 cylinder on top of compression stroke (not exhaust stroke). Drop the distributor in so the the rotor button is pointing at number one cylinder. That will get you in the ball park. The rest is using a timing light to set the engine to factory timing spec by the harmonic balancer. Just a note, if the CPS was bad, it wouldn't rut at all. If it did it may run for a short time then shut down. I think the HOW isnt complete until the WHY is put with it. I naturally over analyze everything. I'm not satisfied with a half way explanation. That tends to show in my videos. I get flamed occasionally for my video being too long. Thats fine, haters will be haters. I get more praise for over explaining than negative. So .. I'm doing all right :-). So with that being said.. Thanks for the great review! That keeps me reassured that Im doing the right thing. Have a great day!

Hey Man thank for posting this video. I am in the process of rebuilding a 1991 jeep YJ. I have a problem no one else has though. My connector from the wiring harness has been on the exhaust manifold and is burnt to no recognition. I want to direct wire it to the CPS wiring but I dont know what color wire goes to the CPS wiring. Do you have a diagram of what color wire goes to the correct pin of the wiring harness connector? I can figure out what I need if I only knew which one of the 3 wires from the wiring harness goes to the correct pin. Hope this makes sense.
@Poweraddicts9 жыл бұрын
+Paul Roberts Yep .. it makes total sense. I'll look this weekend at the color codes. During the week I pull long hours. But, if you gently take a razor blade and cut off the burnt insulation to separate the copper parts of the wires. The copper part of the wires should at least allow you to see where they are going well enough to rewire. I've done that many many times.

Not exactly following you by what you mean be "No noise"? No clicks, no starter turning over?? After replacing all those parts, if the starter isn't kicking in, you may need to check the starter relay.

+Power Addicts - FixJeeps.com - Jeep, car and motorcycle tips . the starter relay fuse I looked at it didn't seem blown is there a way to test with a multimeter
@Poweraddicts8 жыл бұрын
You can use the resistance setting across the two poles. If you got no reaction from the meter, Fuse is bad. Easiest thing to do is swap in another fuse then just try. There should be a starter relay also. Im not sure where its located on a '98. Check the owners manual for the relay location.

Hey Chuck thanks for the great video it helped me change mine on my 95 YJ. Quick question though, my Jeep doesn’t have the rubber gasket/grommet that the CPS goes in, it’s just a big gaping hole. Any idea where I can find one? My local auto parts places don’t seem to have them.

I have a 94 YJ 4cyl and it's been running really rich lots of fumes, and when you de-excelerate it pops like a pop corn popper. I have replaced the MAP, upper and lower exhaust/oxygen sensors, idle control sensor, all plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor and little or no difference. Any thoughts? I think it's timing but I'm told you can't change the timing on these?

Please tell me you figured the jeep out? Any luck on this? I have a 4cyl that went from 16 mpg to 8, did the coil, map, all kinds of sensors and tune up.

I just finished doing a motor swap in my 94 jeep yj 4.0 and it has the problem of turning over but not firing up. I checked for spark and all of the wires have spark but its very weak. Could this be a bad crank position sensor?
@Poweraddicts9 жыл бұрын
When a Crank position sensor or Cam position sensor goes you have no spark at all. Both of those sensors job is to tell the computer to fire the coil. The CKPS or CPS goes bad, the computer has no idea when to fire the coil. So .. weak spark .. coil is the first thing I would go for. Fella I used to work with had an old Chevy truck. It would fire but a very weak lazy spark. Changed the coil .. ran like a champ. Hope that helps. Thanks for dropping by :-) Have a great day!
@gregbatenchuk4989 жыл бұрын
Power Addicts - Jeep, car and motorcycle tips I already replaced the coil and had no luck.. Do you think it could be a bad motor ground?
@Poweraddicts9 жыл бұрын
Good point .. doing an engine swap that is a very good possibility. Make a ground cable between the block and body. Another between the battery and body. Check your battery cable at both ends to ensure solid connection, although usually if a battery ground has issues the engine will have a hard time turning over. Remove the coil from the block and make sure there is metal to metal contact between the coil mount and block. You can't have too many grounds.

Hi, I have a 93 cherokee with the 2.5 4cyl. Turning over but wont fire...looked through a lot of forum posts and everything seemed to point towards crank position sensor so I ended up at your video. Thing is, I pulled the plugs out and I do have a spark. Any ideas? thanks

+Matt Lavigne Smith Gotta check fuel pressure next. Check the fuel pressure testing video, kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZ-okH1urchmns0 . Then as a simple test simply push the shrader valve in to see if you get any fuel squirting out. It has to come out with pretty hard force, not just trickle. If you happen to have solid fuel pressure, then possibly a weak coil. Video for that here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bYSwaYdnf9aHqrc . Thanks for checking out the vids. Hope this help!! Have a great day!

a power diction I have a 96 Jeep Cherokee I have replaced the cam sensor the coil pack and the crank sensor and I'm still not getting bark at the coal please help
@Poweraddicts9 жыл бұрын
+Steven Fisher After replacing all that, it is going to be a wiring or PCM (Power Control Module) issue. The cam and crank sensor tells the PCM what the engine is doing. The PCM then tells the coil and injectors when to work. So, if you arent getting signal to the PCM due to faulty wiring, the PCM doesn't know what to do, so it does nothing. If the PCM is bad .. well .. it cant do anything. Wish I could have given you a better diagnosis. When the coil has no spark, it is either the cam, crank position sensor, coil, PCM or wiring. Good luck .. have a great day!

1990 wrangler yj 2.5- I checked and I do have a spark. Where do I go next? Jeep overheated, loose hose on radiator leaked fluid. I limped it home as it only overheated close by. Fixed loose hose, replaced fluid and she cranked up fine and sound was very normal. Then she conked out and would not start. When I try to start- she will not engage. Everything is working to try to start, but engine will not engage. The gas pedal makes a humming/kocking sound and moves up twice. Didn't know if this is tied to the culprit. Any suggestions on where to look after find spark in this video would be greatly appreciated, b/c I love my jeep.
@Poweraddicts7 жыл бұрын
It takes 3 things to make an engine run. You said you had spark. You said that it started normally for a bit, so you have fuel and at that point you had compression. The issues you stated: It ran hot .. still drove it while it was running hot. Because you still drove it while it was running hot, the first thing that comes to mind is possibly popped a head gasket. If a head gasket is blown in the right places and bad enough, it can swap compression between cylinders, release the compression into the water jackets, release the compression into the crankcase or any combination of those places. Enough compression loss it may not start, I've seen it happen a couple of times. To check that you will need to test the compression of each cylinder to see if one or more is loosing compression. Unfortunately, I haven't created a video on that yet. I just put it on my video "to-do" list and will do it very soon as its an easy check and you can get the tool from any of the "loan - a - tool" programs at auto parts stores. If its a blown head gasket, it's not really a novice job. But it's not brain surgery either.

If I'm not having my check engine light come on when I'm cranking, is that my ECM or could it be my crankshaft position sensor? Thanks so much
@Poweraddicts Жыл бұрын
Verify you are getting power to the ECM. If you are getting power to the ECM and have no check engine light at any time. More than likely you have a bad ECM.

92 yj 4.0lt. it turns off while going down the street. then it turns right back on. then off again and on again while driving. but it stays on while in neutral. any ideas??? thanks
@Poweraddicts7 жыл бұрын
Thats kind of a headscratcher. I'd like to say CPS. But the intermittent and then staying running in Neutral leads me toward a wiring issue. Why? When the engine is running it is vibrating. When in neutral there is no or little physical load on the chassis or engine mounts so therefore, less vibration to cause the "possible wire short or break" to act up. Start the engine and leave it idling in neutral (if it is a stick shift, chock the wheels so it doesn't roll). Start at the harness at the CPS, move the harness around by hand to see if it shuts it down. Then go the Camshaft Position Sensor in the distributor and do the same thing. Typically the Crank and Cam sensor are the only two sensors that will shut the engine down completely. After moving the harness and you get no issues, replace the Crank Sensor first, then the Cam sensor. I have seen those come and go intermittently. Hope that helps, but without actually hands on checking it out myself, kinda hard to diagnose. Please drop a line back in here if you discover what the issue is. I'd really like to know for sure myself. Good luck, Thanks for checking out my video! Have a great day!

Hey Quick Question. I have a 91 yj 2.5. It starts great when cold or when hot just after you cut the jeep off, but if you allow the jeep to sit for 15 minutes or so and then try to start the engine, it has to turn over several times before it starts. Can the CPS do this? What do you think causes this scenario? Thank, Love the videos. Keep them coming!
@Poweraddicts7 жыл бұрын
Typically when a CPS goes, its done. I've seen a few cases where the CPS had to cool down and it started working again. Kinda sounds like a fuel pressure issue. Try this .. after the Jeep is hot, turn the key off and let it sit for the 15 minutes. Instead of trying to turning it over. Simply turn the key on and let it sit for about 10 - 15 seconds. If it fires right up, your fuel pressure is bleeding down. Now, the only thing that makes me second guess that is it "should" be hard to start when cold as well if the fuel pressure is bleeding down. Without actually working on it, that kind of a head-scratcher. Thanks, Glad you like the videos!! Have a great day!

Great video. I have a 1997 Jeep Wrangler 2.5L, Automatic. I was getting code 11 doing the key trick. I changed the crankshaft position sensor and notice that mine was installed opposite of your video and on studs with nuts. I assume this is because mine is an automatic, 2.5 L. I have looked at a lot of videos and pictures on line and don't see any that are installed like mine? Do you know anything about this?
@Poweraddicts7 жыл бұрын
Being that yours is a 97, you have a TJ which is a newer engine generation than the YJs like mine.
