very nice video. Appreciate it very much and all of the detail. I just finished changing my clutch and followed this video every step of the way. The shop wanted $900 for the work, plus my skid plate nuts were shot so that would have been another $200. Did all of this for $225. I wish I had the jack stand that would hold the transmission, but I didn't. I used two straps tightened over either side of the frame and slowly lowered it and then used the straps to raise it back up then two of us lifted it manually and guided it back in. That thing is heavy, but we got it done and the jeep is back on the road. Thanks again!

Scott Johnson You are very welcome! Glad the video helped you out and save you lots a $$$. I got the transmission adapter, then discovered the adapter would not fit my jack. The trans adapter would fit my buddy's jack so we used his jack. If I had not had the jack, I would have dropped the transfer case to lighten that heavy thing up. Then done as exactly as you did. Your video was very helpful! I’ve been having trouble bleeding my clutch and my slave cylinder is making a creaking sound whenever I push the clutch pedal down. Does the creaking sound a sign that the slave cylinder is bad?

This is a great video. I got stuck on getting the bell housing back in line. Do you have any ideas on the best way to line it up. The shaft I can get into the spline but I am having a hard time getting it to go in further? Do I need to spin the drive shaft some to have it line up?

In your video 24 minute 58 seconds in those rubber bands side shown, I think my mistake was to remove them for now strip much oil the hydraulic bearing. It seems to have left his place a rubber or rubber packing inside the cylinder. What do you recommmend me to do?

Thanks for the info man! It's helped a lot so far. Couple questions though. Did you use a transmission jack/adapter or did you use a regular jack with Rachet straps. If it's the latter, how did you secure it to the jack. I don't want to drop the bell housing on myself. It's supported by 3 jackstands and the jack at the moment.

We used a jack adapter that time. I have used straps before, It sorta works. Its kinda like a hope and a prayer that it stays balanced though. Have a friend to be on the other side to help support/balance the transmission as you lower it. Good luck! Have a great day!

I have a 95 YJ and just changed the clutch at 398k. I had a shop install it. Now the clutch does not let out until the peddle is almost all the way up. It let out in the middle before the change. Is there was to correct the travel on the clutch pedal so that it does not let out so high up?

Thanks for the very informative video, Sir! I was driving back after getting my inspection sticker, clutch has just started slipping. Question? On a four cylinder YJ, could it be easier to pull the engine? Yanking the trans with the transfer case is hard on the floor on your back......

That's actually a very good question. As small and light as the 4 cylinder is, it would come out fairly easy. So, it would be a toss up. That transfer case isn't exactly a featherweight, neither is the trans. If you don't have a transmission jack to take care of the heavy lifting, pulling a 4 cylinder engine may actually be easier. It is really easy to pull the engine out of those. Heck, the inline 6 isn't even that bad.

Yes, if you drop that flywheel or clutch on your hand while your laying on your back.....😨 Quick tip, if you don't have a pilot bushing or bearing removal tool, here's an alternative: pack the end of the crankshaft hole with grease. Take a close fitting dowel, stick it in the hole. Give the end of the dowel a sharp rap with a hammer. The bearing comes right out! Learned that 55+ years ago.

I did not see you pull the shifter off of the transmission. Did you leave it on? Looks kind of tricky to remove but how can you slide the transmission back with the shift lever still on? Love the video, getting ready to do it to my '93

Thanks, glad you liked the video! Back when I first got the Jeep, the shifter was broke. Just a metal stub sticking up. I welded a threaded S10 shifter to what was left sticking up. Now I can simply unscrew it to move it out of the way. Thanks for dropping in! Have a great day!

I watch this video and now am on the process of changing my clutch. I thought the throw out bearing was going bad and was making noise but when I got the transmission pulled back the throw out bearing looked good but the input shaft on the trans has some play in it is that normal for there to be some play or is that bearing going bad. Brandon Moore The input shaft has a little movement ... 1/16 of an inch or so. The front part of the input shaft gets its support from the pilot bearing. Sometimes the throw out bearing isn't totally obvious. It may visually appear fine.Take the bearing pushing against the face while turning it. If you feel any "notchyness" ... roughness .. or anything but smooth movement. Bearing is on its way out. Also if the bearing doesn't feel at least a little tight it could rattle. What symptoms/sounds was you getting?

Dude, I can help, I had problems with my speed gearbox and install a new clutch, when assembling and place the clutch release bearing will remove the sidebands that keeps refolding the bearing. but it worked well. mechanical problems that I keep well groomed gearbox, but again down the gearbox and the hydraulic bearing upload started pulling oil, disarmament and it seems that a package or league out of place. I have to replace those leagues or sidebands? What do you recommend me? you can rearm the hydraulic bearing? because I do not see how the league stops packing inside the cylinder.

Those straps are made onto the bearing. If is doesnt actually break the straps, you MIGHT be able to reset it. I've never had to do it so I cant tell you for sure. Trying to put the transmission in without the slave cylinder compressed would be a bit of a pain. Probably be easier to get another bearing assembly and start over.

I enjoy your videos immensely! Detailed and down to earth! That being said, I'm putting in a "new" reman 4 cylinder engine in my 1990 YJ and am wanting to replace the clutch at the same time. My good buddy who is helping me recommended I replace the flywheel to get the most out of the revitalizing. My problem is I CAN'T FIND A REPLACEMENT!!! Any help would be appreciated for finding a flywheel for a 1990 2.5 liter 4 banger with a 5 speed manual. Thanks!

Take your original to a automotive machine shop and have it resurfaced. Thats all a reman does beside giving it a major clean up as well. No need to replace it unless its cracked or damaged. Good luck! Have a great day!!

Grant Curtiss It's been a thought. But as I scored another engine and trans that I swapped in (see here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZmWkpoeXodd3eqs ) . The transmission had a NEW clutch installed, so in the name of saving the $$ I dropped it all in as is. If I happen to run across the parts seriously cheap to convert to external I'll consider it then. Happy this video saved you time and money! When doing a engine swap, does it add any work for the mechanic to swap the clutch? Is there even a extra bolt to the replacing the clutch when doing a engine swap on the 2.5L I have a mechanic that is wanting to charge a little extra for doing this.

Yes, there is extra work. I highly recommend doing while the engine is being swapped.

We installed the engine yesterday what a "B" getting it to line up with transmission!!! Having issues with the engine mounts lining up not sure what I did wrong. How do you know if everything lined up correctly? Also is it ok to bleed the clutch now?

Engine mounts can be a PAIN!! The transmission will not properly mount flush with the block if you do not have everything lined up properly. So .. if you have all the bolts in the pressure plate and the spines lined up correctly, the block and trans should be connected and even. If you have the clutch, master cylinder and slave cylinder installed. You can bleed it. Hope this helps! Have a great day!

hey man I rebuilt my transmission and replaced the clutch in my 91 YJ 4.0 but had major issues with bearing that came with the kit did want to fit thought it was in straight turns out it wasn't. just ordered a replacement bearing and tips for the pilot bearing install to insure its straight? also when I went to autozone for a replacement bearing the one the sold me was way too small fit the shaft but not the crank any reason for that ?

bmriverrat11 Well ... first of all, looks like Autozone simply goofed up. Because as far as I know, if you have the 4.0 and the AX15 trans. There is only one pilot bearing. As for getting it straight on the install. I just simply tap around the bearing until its seated. Then find a deep well socket that is close to the outer diameter without being larger than the bearing. Not hitting it very hard, drive it home. If its the correct bearing, it should pretty much self align. Hope this helps.

I have a question I have external slave that had two plastic straps holding it back I cut them then installed slave did I damage anything. I asked Autozone what they where for they hand no clue

It doesn't damage them, it just makes it harder to install. The plastic straps are for hold the slave cylinder push rod back for an easy bolt in installation. It can still be installed with the straps cut. So no biggie! Have a great day man!! Thanks for dropping by!!

I got the kist at Advanced auto. I don't remember what brand all the parts were. Just make sure you put good quality fluid in the master/slave cylinder and it will be fine. They don't go out very often. What kills the throw out bearing the fastest is using cheap brake fluid or resting your foot on the clutch when not shifting. Thanks for checking out the video! Joe Swanson Thanks, glad you liked the video. You should get one. They are a great ride to own. Parts are not too crazy expensive and they are easy to work on. As for mileage, welllll they aren't know for being an economy ride. Wranglers are driven for the passion of enjoying them. The engine I currently have in it is getting about 16 -17 MPG. The engine I pulled was getting about 19. Hopefully sometime next year I'm going to rebuild the original engine. Possibly get some MPG's back. But, I wouldn't give my Jeep up for anything. I drive 70 miles round trip to and from work. It's worth every penny I'm not saving over driving an econobox. Thanks for taking the time to drop a line. Have a great day!!

Thanks for the quick and helpful response! I also forgot to ask your opinions on the 2.5L? They seem to be much cheaper around where I live (WI). In my case, I would probably not opt for a lift and huge tires, but would still like to use it for trail riding and some commuting. Would the 2.5L be ok? Are they as reliable and cheap to work on as their 4.0 counterpart? Thanks so much!

Joe Swanson My sister has a 2.5L. They do good for trail riding. Kickin' around town is fine. Highway, watch out for the Prius, they might run over you! They get worse mileage than the 4.0L because the 4 little squirrels has to work so hard to overcome the barn door aerodynamics of the Wrangler. But .. I still like 'em. Me personally, if I ever score a 4 banger for the right price, I'd be dropping in a V8 ASAP. So, in short if you are not commuting lots of highway miles, you will love it! They are still lots of fun.

I have an 88 wrangler with Peugeot gearbox. I replaced the clutch and components due to a rate long throw out bearing. Still after the replacement it still rattled (unless you engage) is there not a sleeve or something on the shaft to help stabilize? Can’t believe that only a c clip holds that thing secure.

It simply slides over the input shaft and is clipped in. Not much to them. There is a possibility that you may have gotten a bad throw out bearing. I've seen it happen and it's very frustrating to have to pull the trans all over again!!

oregon jeeper so, i was an idiot and put p.steering fluid in my master cyl (brother in law "fluid is fluid"}would a new master and clutch kit take care of fhis or all lines needed to be replaced? 4.3 ,headers,clifford manifold, 4 brl ,locked!

+Debbie Turnbull Nope .. fluid is not just fluid. Each has it specific use. First I would try bleeding the whole system pushing brake fluid through the lines. The reservoir is so small it would take no more than a cup to put the proper fluid back in it. Pull all the fluid from the reservoir, add brake fluid .. just keep bleeding until the fluid comes through clear. Power Steering fluid is much darker than brake fluid. You should be OK .. if not it will let you know over time. Then you can consider changing parts then. Hope this helps! Have a great day!!

It's a 1994 yj 2.5 with 95,000 miles. And I think the brass gears are going bad too cause it will grind gears sometimes

Brandon Moore Sounds like it's time for a tranny rebuild or another trans. Around here Wrangler parts are very hard to find. I ended up using a Cherokee transmission. The transfer case needs to be reclocked if the XJ transmission is used. But, it's really easy to do. Just pay attention to the little parts. I have a couple of videos for 2 different reclocking procedures. Being that you have a YJ trans available just swap the tail housings between the XJ (Cherokee) and YJ .. your good to go! This isn't actually a comment but moreless a question. I just changed my clutch, assembly and flywheel. I have a 94 yj with the man 2.5 liter engine and yes it's a hydraulic system. Well can't seem to get my clutch bled so I watched a video. My tranny don't have the 2 lines you was bleeding yours with or a bleeding valve. So what now.

I've never seen a hydraulic system with no way of bleeding it. Even the new systems that come pre-filled with fluid has a bleeder valve. So without seeing it there is no way of me knowing whats going on.

I use a socket against the fly wheel teeth against the alignment pin so I CAN USE BOTH HANDS TO UNDO AND RETIGHTEN THE PRESSURE PLATE

***** I just called advance Auto got the part number. Here is a trick for ya. Go to Retailmenot. c o m .. type in the name of the auto parts store in your area. See which one has discount coupons .. Advance Auto typically always has some form of online discount code. After you have gotten the part number from the parts store that has a coupon code and the part in stock. Order your parts on the parts store website. Once you get to the checkout part of the shopping cart there should be a place to enter the coupon code. Enter the code and watch for the savings. When you get to the part of the payment process that asks about shipping there will probably be an option to pick up at the store. I always do this on expensive items to save money when I can. I purchased a starter last week using this exact method. Saved $26 on the part. According to Advance Auto website, you and I have different clutch sets. I have 91jeep yj and I put in clutch pressure plate .know it hard to get and out of gear.before with old clutch worked fine. Every machete says rebuild transmission...I don't think that's the problem...I have hard time trusting mechanics

With the motor running and the clutch out you could here a bearing making noise then you would press in the clutch with the motor running it would stop. Or if you where going down the road and press in the clutch and the transmission in gear you could hear the same noise but press in the clutch and out of gear while the jeep is moving it would stop. And on the input shaft it's about a half inch of movement up down left or right or in a circle motion. Lol another book for ya.

That input shaft doesn't sound good. There definitely is not supposed to be a 1/2" of movement. The first part of the description does sound like a throw out bearing. Friend of mine has a 2000 TJ, he has been driving his with that noise for a long time now. Sometimes the bearing can be noisy but still be drive-able. But, ya never know when the bearing decides to call it quits. Have that input shaft checked, hope it's not toasted!! What year Wrangler is it?

Check the fluid in the clutch master cylinder. If that is good, try bleeding the slave cylinder. If that still dont work. Change the master and slave cylinder. Good luck! Have a great day!

Yea ... Its been riding there since I got the Jeep. There are no occupants so I just haven't knocked it out of there yet. Maybe my next creek riding trip will wash it out.
