I caught a rainbow trout at Quarry Lakes in Fremont California with powerbait using same setup and the guy next to me caught a 10 lb catfish using the same setup I'm not sure about what type of power bait but it was powerbait

In the morning I let it float. Mid day I put a split shot a little above the powerbait to make it sink just a bit. worked out great.

I always used powerbait to catch steelhead and salmon returning from the ocean. Not the most glamorous but it worked. Any fish raised in a hatchery will eat it. Farm raised catfish love it too.
@arod9197214 жыл бұрын
Never saw powerbait fished like this. I've been using it for long time and always keep some for when the fish won't bite anything else. I use about a third or maybe even a quarter of the amount that you are using rigged on a modified Carolina style rig. Never fished it in moving water, only lakes and ponds around here. most of the larger fish i've caught were on the smallest amounts of bait. Only exceptions was a 9.4lb trout I caught on a cast master and a 6.6lb trout on some Salmon eggs. Nice to see a different approach.

I’ve actually caught a ton of brook trout on powerbait. I don’t know why they would like it so much considering their nature but there are still some days when the only thing I can catch them on is the powerbait. It definitely not browns or tigers. They won’t seem to touch this stuff with a 6 foot pole lol

More than stalked trout eat powerbait. I've caught over 20 species of fish on powerbait. It's the scent that sells the bait. Not the shape, so the hatchery pellet theory people try and sell is false in my opinion. Especially since alot of people make there powerbait in worm shape now. fish rarely care about shape. Most of them species where wild such as lake trout and mountain whitefish, Bull trout, dolly varden etc etc.. Good video though. Thanks for posting. Tight lines.

Does flavor of powerbait make a difference or is it just different colors?
@NRVOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
That's a great question. In most cases scent or flavor is relevant. However the color is what initially attracts the fish. I feel like both good scent & optimal color is what sets certain jars apart. For example the salmon/peach outfishes the yellow (similar colors) 10:1
@ethanliu1223 жыл бұрын
@@NRVOutdoors thanks for the tips! Do you have any flavor youd recommend for clear creek fishing, and lakes with grass?

Why oh why if you know you don't intend to keep the fish don't people squeeze the barb flat? It makes it so much easier to remove the hook. Although they fight like hell, trout are quite delicate when being handled.

9/10 times I get gut hooks with power bait going for stocked fish
@chris14063 жыл бұрын
Yeah me to
@MicahAckerman3 жыл бұрын
What I do is put a white floating power worm on the hook then mold my power bait around that. It's kind of like making your own mousetail. The worm seems to block the fish from getting gut hooked. You just then can grab the shank of the hook with needle nose pliers and shake it leaving the fish in the water. You are almost never touching the fish with your hands.
@rens92472 жыл бұрын
I don't gut hook a lot of trout because I set the quick, i rarther see a trout alive than death. I do miss bites from time to time but that's part of the game
@zachseitz8882 жыл бұрын
Carry some nail clippers with you. If gut hooked and not bleeding just clip off the line and release the trout. High rate of survival with this. I find old rusted hooks in trout throats all the time when gutting them!

I try using a leader attached To a snap swivel. You could use store bought leaders but I like to tie mine only because I prefer a shorter length than most store-bought.
@daltonrichards48615 жыл бұрын
You need to use less powerbait and you need to give the bait time in the water because the fish always dose not hit it right away

Where's the challenge in catching hatchery fish with bait similar to hatchery food? Might as well raise the trout in a home aquarium and catch them there. I intentionally will not use bait similar to hatchery food, depending more on skill and knowledge of fish in a natural habitat instead.
