Hey Pete !. How is it going ?. Thank you so much for everything you have contributed to this channel. I got a question for you. I recently bought the usb microphone Samson C01U Pro ,(it hasn’t arrived yet) for working on my iPad. And I’m also looking for a usb hub to connect not only the mic but a mouse, keyboard and a usb flash drive. My question is: do I need specifically a powered usb hub ? Or with a normal usb hub it will be ok ?. Thank you so much !
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Hey there. You will need a powered one like this to provide enough energy to power everything while connected, otherwise you'll be constantly battling "this device uses too much power" issues. If you want a portable solution, you can power your hub via a USB battery like this - kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWOvoX-gfdN-fdk

Can you please show of this setup works with harddrives without connecting charger to ipad as well. Or buying usb3 adapter with lightening charging port is absolutely necessary?!
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Hey there. In my experience so far, all drives I have tried require the additional power. I am yet to try an externally powered hard drive but have heard that these DO work without additional power as long as they get all their power form the AC connection. I still highly recommend having a genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter for reliability and flexibility however.

Nice one Pete, you sound like mad craic! Is it possible to also power the iPad off the usb hub while interfaces etc are connected?
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Cheers mate. Yes, you can with this one as it has a dedicated power only port on the top. Don’t use any of the data ports or a gun that doesn’t have this or you could create a loop that may cause problems. If you have a hub without a power only port, use a separate battery or power outlet to power it up.

@PeteJohnsMusic

Hey Sergio. So the Tendak hub has 4 days ports on top and a “power only” in the front. Powering the ipad through a data port can cause issues with feedback loops so you always want to power via a powered only port. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZSQkH-fqtaciKM

Thanks for the vid, it prompted me to buy one. I just received my Atolla version of this. It makes the ipad subtly vibrate (I feel it on the back of the ipad) and the hub itself emits an electrical charge which I can feel when it’s touched. In your experience is this just a normal side effect of the device or do you think my unit is faulty and should be replaced?
@PeteJohnsMusic

Hmmmm..... I have had not rot these experiences with the Tendak version personally and have had many other folks use this and the Atolla branded version without reporting this, so I’m not confident that yours is working as it should? Have you tried it with a different outlet? Sometimes you can get fluctuations in power that can affect powered devices? If you continue to have issues I would suggest returning and asking for a replacement.

Hi Pete, good video, Soooo... i have an older 5th gen Ipad, (lightning port) I just ordered one of these hubs because I just purchased my first interface, the Audient EVO 4 interface (based on Patricks review of it) and was disappointed to find out that it can't be powered via the genuine Apple lightning to usb 3 adapter, so now I need one of these too (ugh, this is exactly why I resisted DAWs for so long) anyway, based on your Ipad videos, I think I'm gonna upgrade real soon to an Ipad Air 11", 512 M2 model. My interface can be powered via the USB C from that model Ipad (C to C), but how do I keep power to the Ipad while using the interface? Can this hub help with that? I think I'm overwhelmed from all the research on options right now and can't seem to wrap my head around it at the moment. Thanks for all you do!

@@PeteJohnsMusic Even if I use a powered hub? Would it be better to use an interface with two jacks and could I plug that directly into the iPhone? I guess if I was doing that I wouldn’t have to use a USB mic. I still like the idea of using one USB condenser mic I could probably pick up the whole kit if it was placed correctly.

Hi :-) I have being trying to get this to work, and your channel is the only one I can find with some details on this issue, I got my microphone, I also have a focusrite scarlett 2i2, and the last thing thats left is to connect the ipad to it, but I went and bought a usb hub 3.0 since I know it need to be 3.0 to draw enough power (not 2.0 ) or something, however the light on the scarlett is red, and it works on the pc, so I am thinking its something to do with the usb hub I bought (it was just a normal 3.0 usb hub) and maybe it eather needs even more power from a larger (better) usb hub, or it has to have another appel thing to make it recognice itself in garageband, any tips? By the way I heard some of your electronic music in a video in my feed, great stuff, really detailed compositions, I will have to try that one day :-)

What are you looking to do with Home? I don’t own any Apple connected home products so I don’t use it. If it’s not loading, the standard advice is to close all apps, power off and back on and then try again. You can also try deleting the app and then downloading again from the App Store if you are still having problems.

It genuinely hurt handing over 65 clams and walking out with a piece of plastic, but I've gotta say it's the most useful and integral part of my mobile recording setup and has literally never failed in the 2+ years I've had it, and it still in perfect condition despite getting a beating from me on a daily basis. Critique: The review was good. Further, it's not great if it only includes PROs and forgets about the CONs. I've found a few CONs and it should be mentioned. One, the unit has "blinking capability". When I plugged in a USB "Pocket Juice" which allows me to bring the portable charger out in the field for charging power., the unit's other plugged in unit "blinks". So, I'm assuming it gathers too much power to charge the unit and the other 3 USB devices which are plugged into the Atolla 7-port start blinking. It blinks until I disconnect the Pocket Juice. Obviously not every device charges well. I received a Windows Explorer error: "power surge on the USB (unknown device needs more power than the port can supply error"). The juicer turns red hot to the touch trying/plugging in the charger. The computer continued to give me warning about the power surge.

Unfortunately I bought this item because this site made a video showing that It was possible to connect a USB audio interface to an iPad and it would work for use of a microphone to do recordings... but it doesn’t. there is NO power being sent to the iPad using this device when plugged into the wall, only power to the interface when combined (which I could’ve just as well used an adapter to plug directly into the wall alone).... still not sure of the usefulness and what good this device is #wastedmoney

I thought having the Tendak USB port you featured (when plugged from the wall while having my Presonus 24C interface plugged into it - and the Tendak when connected via a lightning adapter, into my Apple iPad would automatically mean power to BOTH essential units for recording .... but it doesn’t, and so I’m guessing there isn’t a way to power BOTH the interface AND the iPad so I don’t have to eventually run out out of battery life on the iPad?

DO NOT BUY THIS HUB.... Read my story...... I bought two and they are garbage. I plugged mine into the USB 3.0 port on the back of my computer and turned on all the switches. I plugged in a Western Digital 500GB Blue 3Dnand drive into one of the ports and copied some files from my computer to the WD drive. I got a transfer speed of 200+ MB/s. Then I plugged it into the next port and got a transfer speed of 1.1MB/s. Yup... I kid you not... 1.1 Then I plugged into the next port and the next port and got 1.1MB/s again. SO that's THREE ports of 1.1MB/s and one port of 200MB/s. The port closest to the cable connections is the one that gave me the 200MB/s. I contacted the seller who said he would send me a new one free of charge. I offered to send the original two back but he said it wasn't worth it. So when I got the new one, I made the same tests and got the EXACT same results. High speed on the first port near the connectors and 1.1MB/s on the other three ports. So... I plugged it into another USB port and get the same results. Then I plugged it into another computer and got the same results. Then I switched out the WD 3Dnand for a HP 240GB and got the same results. Now, the speeds on the HP were a bit slower than the WD because it wasn't a 3Dnand drive but the overall result was the same. At that point, I just threw all three of them away. I swear on a stack of bibles with my hand in the air... this is a true story.
