WHAT ARE THE SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE POWER ADAPTOR THAT ONE CAN USE WITH THESE 4 PORT HUBS?
@Ink_and_Motion_Studio2 жыл бұрын
From what I've seen personally and based on the info he mentioned...1 usb port= 500mA or .5 Amp, so a 4 port hub would need a 2 amp output power supply just to power all the ports evenly. That doesn't take into account bandwidths or power spikes. Small devices like USB flash drives will differ from HD/SSD in that power consumption dept. Looking @ a SATA 3.0 Bandwidth HD, it indicates 5v - 690mA & 12v - 600mA. Another says 5v - 700mA & no info for 12v. So in short I'd conclude you need a very top notch power supply that can output at least 2.5mA at 5v if you wanna power drives in combination with usb's or other peripherals in one of these multi port hubs that tend to be Chinese cheap-o hardware. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Very useful information. I'm sure we're all here for the same reason, but I think my problem lies more with the hub itself... It completely (well, almost) bricks my PC while plugged in, mainly during boot up, sleep, restart, shut down.. as soon as I unplug it, it goes right back to normal. It's the weirdest thing. I am new to USB-c ports on a PC (that's all that mine offers) and all of my wireless accessories (not over Bluetooth) require the typical USB 2.x/3x so I have to have a hub. I'm not sure how a USB c out struggles with a mouse and/or keyboard transceiver 😒 Getting a new hub later today and I guess I will update about how it goes compared to the one I most recent got (I hope it helps someone out there scrolling around). Anyways, I'll post an update tomorrow or the next day if all goes well with the package in transit lol.

Brilliant. New USBC adapter hub and one USB3 port on the hub (used for my File History backup) just stops after a while. I unplugged iPhone USB charger plug (also in the hub on another port) and of course (derr me) it was probably trying to draw power to charge (even though no phone was actually attached, btw) but as soon as I took that connection out the one with problems (File History USB stick backup to remind you) popped back to life. So point is: that bit of info on power and usage of several items was the answer so, as I say, brilliant for a well explained solution to problem. Thank you.

All USB Hubs i had tested had a really big problem with power, also if Hub has extra power from wall. 1.- Connect a USB HDD mechanical and wait till it is accesible 2.- Connect another USB HDD mechanical and all previous USB HDD connected loose power during an instant. That makes USB Hubs unusable for USB HDD (mechanical), since they loose power while another one is connected. Imagine that happening while hot replacing a failed HDD on a USB RAID configuration, all disks loose power and all disk on the RAID are marked as BAD. If not RAID it is also a problem, transfers in progress get interrupted. And also Worst, with some USB SSD (and also some USB NVMe) they get damaged in such way that they get not be reconogized again (permane t damaged) because sudden power loose. I can not find any review/test about this and i am getting mad to find a USB 3.x HUB with at least 4 ports (better if each port has its own switch to put that port ON/OFF). Any help is wellcome. Note: USB A type connectors and better if 10gbps.

Depending on your USB 2.x controller in the PC, plugging in a *powered* hub can prevent the PC from starting! Seems the Power delivery spec., is unclear about "Bidirectional Power Delivery", some crappy Chinese models confuses the USB host controller. I just had this problem with such a hub.

Power the hub with a charger. Then take some wire cutters and carefully cut into the usb cord that would plug into your computer. very educative info Josh ... I have been tearing my hair apart since dogs ages as to why my peripherals wont work with usb hubs... however, i still have a doubt.. since the usb port recognises a device in that specific port, then how does it differentiate between all devices when connected via a USB hub? i am an avid gamer and use sim racing equipment which needs to be connected via usb. for example if i connect my racing wheel, gear shifter, other various peripherals, headphones / mouse etc, via a usb hub, will it all be recognised separately as separate devices (given that its a powered hub and drawing enough power) ??? your inputs will b of great help .. thanks !
@TechTesseract8 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate - As regards your question... Without going into too much detail, yeah your computer knows the difference of devices that are plugged in, the hub basically just makes your computer think it's got more available inputs, it doesn't care how many (well technically it does, you can have a maximum of 127 USB devices connected to the host at one time) - All that really matters is that they get enough power. Saying that, you are always better off putting your high speed devices (ones that use a lot of data bandwidth) straight into primary ports instead of using hubs, stuff like hard drives, flash drives, webcams etc. All your slower gear like controllers and mice can go into hubs. So yeah, to condense that: Yes, your computer will recognize them as separate devices. High speed stuff straight into computer ports if possible. And use a powered USB hub! Hope that answers your question! :D
@faraazfadra24338 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your reply Josh and a Happy New Year ! but doesnt it depend on the motherboard? like what the motherboard detects as an input in a specific port ? or the number of PCIe controller cards ? something else besides electronics that hog power would be length of extension USB cable, so if you run *like me* a couple 10 foot cords off a hub that is not powered, to a low power device like a webcam, and think "well crap I guess the cables are just too long and getting too much interference" well no, I have ran 4 10 foot cords on a powered unit like you mention, and been OK, with one hub, and more if I insert a hub inbetween every 3 cable extensions of 10 foot (or two 15 foot which is about 5 and 2.66 meters respectively or close at least to that for those using metric lol) and once I added power to the hubs so they give that full 500mA of 5v to the hub ports, it solved the distance issue causing it to not give a signal, anyone who is planning on a raspberry pi based webcam security system, can use this to get the distance they need for all their cameras off plain wired USB powered cameras on the cheap, just so you all know :) SO the TLDR of this all is extra power helps overcome limitations on how much cable you are trying to power your device through, *also I use two wireless headsets and have one dongle 30 foot from my computer going in opposite directions in the house so one headset reaches the entire back yard, and the other will let me reach all the way out in the neighbors yard across the street ;)

Hi Josh, thanks for the video. It cleared some of my doubts. I would like to ask a question. Is the power from the powered usb hub dependent on the power output of the computer's usb port. I am using a usb device on a tablet pc (microsoft surface 3) and apparently it affects the performance of the usb device compared to when I use the device on my laptop. I was told by the manufacturer of the device that it is due to the limitation of the power output from the tablet pc. Thus i was thinking of using a powered usb hub to resolved this issue but I am not sure whether the power output from the usb hub is in part determined by the tablet's usb power output. My guess is it is not but i would like to seek advice from experts like you. Thanks a lot.

Picked up a virtually identical 4-port Switched Hub (with that super tiny undefined DC connector port) and was expecting it would provide "fast" charging (unpowered). It doesn't... So been on the hunt for the compatible DC Power Adapter to see if, say, a 5V 2 to 4 amp would provide enough power for a phone/device to "fast" charge. My Hub is sort of cheap so I question how reliable/safe it'll be running on external power. (The switch lights work when disconnected from a source... Meaning it's stealing battery power from plugged in devices to run itself.
