Never eat a mushroom without 100% positive identification. Here is the Mushroom's of Utah Facebook Page you can use for help with mushroom identification ...

When asking for help with identification, remember to ...
1. Take a close up picture of the cap
2. Take a close up picture under the cap
3. Also of the stem and the base of the mushroom.
4. Mushrooms of Utah may ask you to take a spore print, so be prepared to do that if asked

@@brodiwheeler7583 Hello Brodi, it was about 7,800 ft in elevation, and we found most of them on North facing slopes. This was about two weeks ago.

Are there any morel locations in southern Utah? I've been out for the last two weekends and I've not found anything
@UtahMushroomHunter
@UtahMushroomHunter 27 күн бұрын
Yes, there are for sure. But the morel season in southern utah (St George area) is much more sensitive to weather, and the season is shorter. They can be found in a few areas. If you get up closer to Cedar city, or the mountains in that area, there are quite a few more to be found!! It doesn't have to be cedar city either. It can be the back side of those mountains, or any mountains in the area with the right microclimates.

Yes, it was up in the mountains among the pine trees. You can find them up any canyon currently between 6200 ft and 7,300 ft on north facing slopes among thick pine tree areas. I recently went up a Salt Lake county canyon and searched an area that I had Never searched before, and found a bunch. I will showcase that area in my next video I release.

A couple years ago I was out in the west desert of Utah and found a round ball, I thought. It was white in color, bigger than a softball and smaller than a volleyball. It was some sort of mushroom. What was it and is it eatable.

Hello Larry, yeah it does sound like it could have been a giant puffball (possibly a Calvatia Gigantea), but we can't say for sure without a picture. They are edible if harvested young enough. When they start to turn yellow inside, then they are not good to eat (if it was a puffball). So Kimbrey is likely correct based on what you told us.
