Absolutely bonkers. What would you consider mid-elevation? All the morels I've found so far this year have been ~4600-4800ft, but I wonder if it's time to check out some of the ~6500ft spots I've scouted previously.
@UtahMushroomHunterКүн бұрын
Hello Isaac, yeah, they are definitely popping up the canyons now. I consider mid elevation between about 5,000 ft to about 6,000 ft in elevation. My guess is that they are still small, but they are likely starting to pop at 6,500 ft as well, so definitely worth a look.

I know no one likes to share spots, for obvious reasons haha. What about which county? I have been researching like crazy and know about which elevations, trees, environment and such markers to start looking. I have lived in utah my whole life, but have explored very little of it because my parents were not adventurers or canpers for that matter. My kids have shown a very keen interest in mushrooms alongside me, and we've been exploring the surrounding areas of bountiful but are planning a trip this weekend to go on a day trip. We are planning on driving at least 2 hours towards the northeastern part of the state to search mid elevation tree stands for any edible mushrooms. Not morels in particular, i dont expect to find those on our first outing or for anyone to share their spots for that. I was wondering if you or anyone would be willing to share the county at least for any mushrooms. I usually share my finds with the headstart class my daughter is in, and they go nuts haha. We're able to use the microscopes the class has and its super fun. So id love to be able to do this with some new mushrooms we havent looked over. So far, reishi, turkeytail, polypore, oyster, meadow mushroom, lbm's, but nothing super fancy haha. The mushrooms dont necessarily have to be edible, but just fun to look at minus extremely poisonous ones though since i dont want the class touching these ones with their hands which is kind of the point when sharing the mushrooms with the class. I want them to feel the different aspects of the mushrooms because the differences are so varied, even within one mushroom. Thats what makes it fun! I also think its very important to discuss and recognize mushrooms very early on, as it may save their lives if they're out camping with family and stumble upon a death cap or fly agaric. Anyways, long ramble, i appreciate any info, or even not, because your videos show me they're out there and im willing to look without any guidance because my family just like exploring either way. Thanks again!

Hello Danielle. Most people right now are finding them in Weber, Davis, and Utah county, and I bet they are now starting to pop in Wasatch, Summit, and Cache County. They are pretty much found in every county honestly. I am working on a video with more guidance that can be used in any county here in Utah. Send me a text at 801-787-5866 and I can give you some more help in the mean time. In addition, if you are interested I can add you to my list of people who want to go out on a hunt with me. South side facing south !!! North side facing north !! Anyone find any around Ogden area ? I went out about an hour today .. Gonna try it again tomorrow.. I grew up hunting them in Ky. Been here almost 13 years and just found out they were here this winter.. after finding this channel
@UtahMushroomHunter12 күн бұрын
Early in the morel season slopes that face south get more direct sunlight, which makes the soil slightly warmer, which causes the mushrooms to pop a bit sooner. So any slope that faces south (or gets more direct sunlight) has a higher chance of having morels pop earlier in the season. Another perfect example of this is Thomas Wood's (on Mushrooms of Utah Facebook page) post of the Black morels he is finding. Black morels usually are the last to pop, but he found an area along the Bonneville shoreline that are on a south facing slope that pop early for him every year because the soil warms sooner than other areas, and the micro climate is ideal. As the season progresses, you find them on the north slopes, or on any slope. Mushrooms that pop later in the year after the soil warms are mostly found just on the north slopes because they retain the most amount of water because they do not get direct sunlight. It is all about soil temperature and water retention.
