The coolest night afterburner takeoffs I have ever seen were SR-71's at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa. They would keep it in afterburner for as long as you could see it in the sky. That's why a KC-135 tanker always takes off an hour before the SR-71 does just to top it off after takeoff.
@nekomasteryoutube3232 Жыл бұрын
Yeah thats because the Sr-71's leaked fuel like a sieve but when in the air, the skin would heat up and start sealing all the joints keeping the fuel in. Thus is why you need a mid-air refueling after take of as I've heard that SR-71's would basically be taking off with almost nothing, and only get their full fuel load in mid-air.

I work on C130's which carry usually around 32,000 pounds of pool. Our unit had a guy transfer from F16's to 130's. If I remember correctly the F16 only has like 7,000 pounds of fuel on board, and if doing a afterburner takeoff they use most of the fuel from the fuselage tank/s. Not sure on the exact layout of F16 tanks, I'm just relaying what I remember hearing.

Insane fact : Aircrafts uses fuel in take off, More than their whole trip. !!!!
@fromnorway6432 жыл бұрын
Sane fact: The F-16 consumes about 9 litres per second with full afterburner. If the afterburner is lit for one minute, it will consume 9 x 60 = 540 litres of fuel. The capacity of the internal tanks is 4000 litres, so a typical take-off with afterburner will consume only a small fraction of that. However, if the afterburner was lit constantly, it would use all that fuel in about 7.5 minutes, which is why it's only used for short periods.

I don't comprehend how jet thrust and 'fire' propels and pushes the jet forward.
@fromnorway6432 жыл бұрын
Action = reaction, also known as *_Newton's third law_* When lots of hot gases (mostly heated air that has been sucked in at the front) are ejected at very high speed in one direction, it produces an equal force in the opposite direction that pushes the aircraft forward. The afterburner or "fire" increases the maximum thrust by heating and thus speeding up the gases even more, but it consumes lots of fuel and is therefore only used for short periods when that extra thrust is needed.
