Understanding the backstory of the song makes it even more powerful and emotional. He wrote this while angry and confused about a divorce. Watch it again and realize he's angry as he walks slowly for 5 minutes to the drums. Then when he finally gets there, he unleashes his rage and passion on the drums. Powerful.

Phil was a drummer first, vocalist second. For years, he did backing vocals in Genesis while Peter Gabriel sang lead. After Gabriel left and Phil discovered he couldn't sing the entire show behind his drum kit, they hired other drummers for touring, but he always still did some drums. (Until age changed that, as noted before).

It was a very dramatic piece indeed, derived from the events that led to a divorce. I think in order to deliver the song with what he feels is the proper intensity, he has to revisit those painful memories. The entire song is a confrontation. What's being felt in the air is the rising tension leading up to that confrontation.

He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance Into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is 70 now. His son is on the Domino tour with Genesis currently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).

Phil Collins was originally the drummer for Genesis. Whe the lead singer Peter Gabriel left the group to pursue a solo career, they held auditions for lead singer. After several months of failing to find anyone the found satisfactory, Collins said I can do better than those people. He stepped up and became their lead singer. As I understand it he was never overly comfortable singing as he preferred, at least initially, being in the background

This song cemented itself in the minds of people when it appeared regularly as background music in the iconic tv show of the 1980s called Miami Vice that aired in those days Friday nights at 10 pm. In fact music club profits went down because people would stay home to see that show all over The United States. The song Mama also sung by Phil when he was with the group Genesis also has strong vicious drums which Phil played himself. Check it all everybody.

Oh yeah, Phil Collins is a legend, listen to some old Genesis stuff, both when he was just the drummer and when he was the front man after Gabriel left. Unique and very good.

He was a drummer 1st,/ backup singer As for not drumming, Collins said, "I'd love to but you know, I mean, I can barely hold a stick with this hand. So there are certain physical things that get in the way." He had back surgery that left him with the inability to drum anymore and uses a cane to assist him in walking. His son will be playing the drums in the Genesis reunion tour this year. Watch some Genesis videos to see him play more drums

yeah, he son played drum when Phill went on a solo tour a few years ago. sad that he have to sit down and sing. the young man is very lucky to be on tour with his father. he gotta be really lucky to do a nother tour with his dad in genesis.

Phil Collins is a criminally underrated drummer. He was the drummer for Genesis when Peter Gabriel was the singer / front man. Phil Collins also played drums in a band called Brand X where he shows just how good he is on drums.
