That was the sound of that entire stadium "holding its breath" (which he milks for the entire time), waiting for that MOMENT, when he starts his drumming. Then the crowd goes wild. I was blessed to work at a large concert venue ("Scandinavium", in Gothenburg, Sweden...) in my early 20's - and when it was announced that Phil Collins was coming to town, the tickets sold out in record time. Watching him (from the very front and center of the arena...) perform this track (as well as others...), and the music literally pulsating through your body, was an experience I'll never forget... He's an extremely musically talented individual (as well as conscientious to the plight of others...). No matter what other tracks (of his...) that you guys decide to react to, you can't go wrong!

He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance Into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is 70 now. His son was on the Domino tour with Genesis recently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).

This song came out in 1981. A few years later I had moved from the midwest to south Florida. I lived in West Palm Beach. I don't know if it was because being inspired by the Miami Vice episode with In the Air Tonight playing on but I would remove the T-Tops off my new Trans AM and just drive all night only listening to this song. Some nights even going on down to Miami to hang out driving. There were even two times that I got so caught up to this song and found myself down in Key West. This song was played everywhere, radio and shopping malls and wherever.... felt like I should have been sick of it, at 17 years old. But though I didn't get divorced (which is what this song was about), I went through all the huge changes that most people do, turning 17-18 years old... and this song was always on my mind with huge anticipatory changes. This is the antithesis of 80s pop/rock.The intro to the guitar rif,the drops in tempo, the anticipation of "THE" drum break unheard of for a break to be 3 minutes into a song, if any song sums up the 80s this is it {the link with Miami Vice didn't hurt either (pushed up jacket sleeves included)} Phil dueling drums with Chester Thompson (Genesis & Phils supporting drummer) is a good one to check out if you like drumming perfection.

Just pick a song. Phil is a living legend that rarely misses. Solo, or with Genesis. His last studio album in 2010 was Going Back. Motown was one of his favorite love of music and this album was all covers of Motown. He even signed up all remaining Motown session members for the album. The single Going Back, brings tears to my eyes, every time I hear it. I got to see him for the fifth time 2 years ago in Denver for his Still Not Dead Yet tour. Absolutely phenomenal night! When I saw Asia and BJ's original reaction I commented about the background story: "Phil was about to go on a really long tour (9 months) and his wife said if you leave, I won't be here when you come back. She had two young kids....tough time. This was before Genesis was a hit band. She ended up having an affair with the interior decorator (one interview Phil put a paint can on his piano). He tried to get her back but no way, so he started writing his songs. I think this is directed at the 'other' guy. Otherwise the lyrics make little sense. He is getting ready to have it out with him (at least in his fantasy). That's why it is SO intense and dramatic. That's my take. Phil says he doesn't know what the words mean, only that he was bitter and angry at the time. Once again I think you nailed it! [oh, the drowning thing is absolutely NOT right. Mr. Collins said it was in no way about some guy drowning] I think the face in the video was that other guy."
