yeah in her documentary, when she was writing this song, her mother said “are you seriously implying you’d jump off the roof?” and billie nodded, and later said “i feel like this way of saying it is better than doing it. like this song is the reason i don’t.” it’s truly a heartbreaking song, but it’s a song that so many people unfortunately relate to and that’s what makes this song so genuine and amazing, and billie herself such a good person

I was listening a lot to this song when I was in a really bad state of mind.. I was literally sitting on a rooftop, drinking and crying and listening to this. Every night. This song is also a reason I didn't do it. ❤

@@beaak.9292 I'm happy you didn't, sometimes stuff in life, or ourselves, troubles, maybe our own mind, overwhelm us, we feel like we are drowning, that's because we can't express what we are feeling, we are repressing maybe due to our situation in life and relationships, or maybe we just don't know how to express it. Yet there's another person expressing it and that give us relief, we let them speak our mind out and unveil that broken part of our soul if you please. Life is a mystery, sometimes it feels like a ride into the dark and we want to get out, run out, run away, but if we stay, after that darkness will come the light. The years go by and we learn to see in that darkness, and then it's not that scary anymore, so we accept it as a normal part of life, and we learn that as we have the day and night and day again in our world, life is also a cycle of light and darkness, it always comes in waves, in the end, all of that darkness we've seen throughout our lives is what taught us to enjoy and appreciate all of the light we've also seen. Because if we only have seen the light, we couldn't tell how graceful it was. Hugs to you! Hope you have way more good times in your life than bad times. In other words, I just want you to be happy!

Billie admitted that during some traveling when her music first took off, one of the only time when her brother had a separate hotel room from her, she sat there having a complete mental break and was considering jumping out of the window. She dealt with a lot of suicidal ideation when she was in her teens after her dance injury and Tourette’s got really bad, it took her a while to be able to admit to needing help and having those thoughts to anyone besides her brother. When they wrote this song, it made her mother break down in tears when she asked Billie if she would really do this? And Billie just nodded and said yes, it really scared her mom. After that is when her parents also started touring with her, they basically gave up their lives for a long time during the beginning of her career to care for their sick but extremely talented child, because it wasn’t fair to expect Finneas to carry it all on his own shoulders. Even though he did and had no problems doing so, he’s said: all I’ve ever wanted to be was Billie Eilish’s brother.

I've always interpreted that crescendo as an emphasis on how heavy the lyrics feel. Especially the one following "a year-long headache", it's almost like that sound mimics the pressure in your head after you've been crying. I think of it as the literal sound of a headache. Absolutely love that part.

She did a solo of this for Apple. Just her playing the piano on a stage by herself. Hits even harder than this. Think she was around 16 when this was first recorded. In a dark place as others have said.

Thank you for reacting to this! Love your reactions a lot! If you listen closely to the way the music and the lyrics are played out you can hear that she is standing on the roof, traffic and people on the streets below. She sings "there's no way out, but down" and in the end of the song the music makes it sound like she is jumping and landing on the ground with ambulance noise and people screaming.

If you get a chance on your own or whatever please check out her live performance of this song. It’s a produced video (not fan or anything). She plays the piano with no backup or anything. You couldn’t hear a pin drop in the audience. And as you probably know her concerts are wild. Check it out!! Should be on her channel.
