In this video we look at how the locking wheel nuts are made and what to do if they are spinning and you cannot remove your wheel nuts. Here is the link to the wheel nut key picture spreadsheet docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

You star! I spent yesterday afternoon trying to identify my locking wheelnuts after someone 'borrowed' my removal key. A few minutes looking at the spreadsheet in your link and I've ordered a new one - thanks!

Problem comes with power tools which tend to damage the locking wheel nuts and key. Also people like Halfords install them to a million lb/ft torque.

Tries story I was in a bad accident on the m27 in my youth. The car in front lost their rear wheel and wiped me out. They just had me tyres fitted at Halfords and they stripped the threads. I was in a Mini Cooper s original with full roll cage so I was fine !

top thanks, the idea saved my day. As I had no T70 and could not find a shop having these, I have successfully used a M14 socket. Shame on Lnd Rover to sell such cheap crap sockets

I had this problem with my F Type Jaguar with the same locking wheel nuts. However all I did was slowly turn the outer ring until it matched up with the inner ring. Then made sure the locking wheel nut key locked into both outer and inner ring and off it came. Simple without all the effort and damage you and others go through.

Good comment- we tried this but no luck as the softer steel lugs had rounded … the harden steel cap does not round off but spins… the inner part rounds off.

Good work Team! 😃😃😃 Decades ago, my old friend Bill used to apply the very very slightest wipe of Coppaslip on the threads and WD 40 on the locking not to stop them seizing.whilst all against the “rules”, he never had any undo by accident! 😲😬😬😃 Richard

I think I agree with Bill - especially for locking nuts - put some sort of grease on the nut !

I took the locking nuts off mine and replaced them with ordinary nuts. The chance of you finding your lr on bricks and the wheels missing is pretty remote
@Gooner-19714 ай бұрын
I did the same, a few weeks after I bought mine .. just not worth having those horrible nuts on, and they rust and look awful eventually…

A Carbide drill bit would be your friend with this one. It will easily drill hardened steel and they are available on Amazon or ebay. Maybe drill a small hole at an angle through to the soft inner and knock a pin in to lock it. Or drill the middle out and whack the torx bit in.
@patrickallion1147Ай бұрын
I have tried on my LR4 2016, it is very hardened steel. HSS Tungsten drills did not drill trough, I had to cut the cup in 2 with a grinder as in the video.

Great job. I wonder if it would have worked if you had used a large easy out tool. Just a thought..

I did the same when I lost my locking wheel nut socket for my L322 years ago. Did all four with my Dremel. If you tighten the other four nuts on the wheel your working on it loosens the locking one off and you can tap the locking nut round with a sharp cold chisel.
@L6634 ай бұрын
Good idea on the tightening of the other nuts

The new GAP iid tool G4 is released. How about helping us understand what can be done with that. Can we finally edit parameters of the new Defender and load files for unlocking software features?

These days not often but defender spare wheels do.

Using an impact wrench is usually what damages these. I've just replaced them with normal nuts, those are not without problems as they corrode and swell, so i always have some spares in the glove box.

Yes impact driver is the problem I think

John. Buy the ones specifically for alloy wheels.

I wonder if that hammering could damage the lug or other components on the wheel itself. Maybe after cutting a slot with the dremel, you could use a large flat screw driver or a chisel to set in the cut and then use a large wrench to turn the chisel. Just a thought. All that hammering just seems a bit caveman with those nice wheels and the other damage it could potentially cause.

Why are there so many stupid issues on new LR models it seems to have gone to 💩 since TATA ! Saw a new Defender the other day on the M6 in traffic with the front wheel arch trim hanging off and flapping in the wind? My FL2 is still perfect 180k miles in 😊

Wheel locking nuts/bolts what a pain, who steals wheels these day's ? The tools i have in my arsenal, Plasma Plate cutter, welder, left handed drill Bits. These tools have done the job on so many pesky Bolt/nut's over the years.
