Rather than stopping you opening the bonnet while driving along, I think you'll find that bracket on the Defender is to stop someone breaking a window to gain access under the bonnet of a locked, parked car. Catalytic convertor theft defeat, maybe? I believe the cats are up closer to the engine on these.

It is great that you and Simon for Powerful UK met up with each other! I’ve always assumed that the ‘Stig’ refers to the Top Gear Test driver who originally, allegedly originates from Finland, where the famous Rally drivers come from.
@rafflesnh7 ай бұрын
I seem to recall Simon naming it the Stig after the Top Gear driver(s) who always wore a white helmet with black visor which match the car's colour scheme.
@timwilliams23437 ай бұрын
Stig Blomqvist was a Swedish rally driver, but I just learned from Wikipedia that a 'stig' was a new boy at Repton (where Clarkson and Wilman went to school).

14:19 Useful TIP I also got from someone that helped me: instead of repeatedly pumping the hydraulic cylinder in order to rise the engine lifting crane, it's much faster and more practical to undo the release valve of the pump, then lift the crane by hand, and then close the release valve. Hope this is a worthy LR Time viewer comment. All the best from me!

Christian what's your opinion on this from a anti-seize manufacturer; Henkel-Adhesives Quote: "steel substrates pose numerous challenges when it comes to seizure and galling. Using anti-seize lubricants for steel can help minimize many of these issues and facilitate assembly and disassembly a for maintenance and repair. However, it is important to remember that while many compounds exist for steel, copper anti-seize on steel will create inter-crystalline corrosion which can cause parts to crack or break when under heavy loads." They recommend using Nickel antiseize instead.
@Vera_and_Christian7 ай бұрын
We do use different kind of anti seize too. But this statement was written by a rocket scientist. Had many bolts snap because of Rost but not a single one from crappadappa corrosion. Christian

Tea once a week? It's a start I guess, but (old school) British mechanics can only work effectively if there is a mug of tea, at minimum, once an hour! When you pick up a mug to drink it, it forces you to re-evaluate your work so far, and to plan the next hour. 😀
@stevek30367 ай бұрын
These kind of big jobs only work because it's a team effort - Vera takes care of the important details to make sure re-assembly goes smoothly while Christian takes all the credit for the man-stuff with his big extension

@SiCrewe7 ай бұрын
Have you ever tried heating a stuck bolt and then melting a candle onto it before attempting to loosen it? Basically, heat the bolt as normal and then dab the candle onto the bolt-head and any exposed threads. The theory, I think, is that the wax can wick into threads, and under the head, acting as a lubricant. Also the wax won't evaporate when it comes into contact with hot parts like a lot of releasing oil does. Seems like one of those things that was probably a good idea 50 years ago but modern lubricants should work better. Changing the brake discs on my Disco' 2, I struggled with various bolts until, eventually, I thought I'd try using a candle. Dunno if it was just a coincidence but the seized bolts I smothered in candle-wax came out much easier than the others. 👍

Tea and biscuits was traditional thinking food in our Jaguar garage. Every time we snapped a head stud or diagnosed a dead distributor module, put the kettle on and have a chat and a think over a cup of tea. Same with doing tappets on a Merc 280, or spark plugs on a Jensen Interceptor: take a deep breath, down tools, make a cup of tea and recover your compusure and your patience. That being said, I learned to drink tea in glass in Berlin and it is just the best way to drink tea, just a sublime experience. Thanks again for the laughs, the inspiration, and the knowledge. Really enjoying my second vicarious Disco 4 rebuild!
