This is going to be my next lathe. I was very happy to see a real world test of this lathe. It's good to know this lathe will not fail for want I want to do. I had a lathe run away from me before so glad you didn't get hurt. Well done.

Funny, when the lathe started walking on you, I panicked and actually paused the video twice thinking I was helping you to stop it from walking. I just measured it, Richard. The gap between the legs is 26 3/4". Not sure if that is enough for all wheelchairs, but could be for some. The bottom of the bed ways is now just above 32" and it can be lowered down to 22". I hope that helps! Billy

I too am a wheelchair turned here in the UK, I use a cheap Chinese mini lathe on a metal stand which enables me to get my wheelchair under, sometimes I can use a perching chair if I'm having a good day. I did look at lathes and found Robust do a beautiful lathe with a stand specifically made for us wheelchair users, however I cannot stretch to the cost .

I know that I'm way late to commenting on this video, but I use a wheelchair. That's why I have always stuck with a small bench top lathe, because I need to be able to roll under my workbench. I had no idea the height adjustment in some of the bigger models out there. This was very helpful for considering what might be a potential upgrade, where I didn't think there would be one. I'd need a bigger shop, and more skill, but at least I know there's room for advancement in the ability of my equipment. Thank you for doing this, Billy!

Thank you for this review! Because of this video, I decided to pull the trigger on this model. I've been waffling between this and the Laguna Revo1836 for almost a year now. The Laguna is just way bigger (and more $$$) than what I need, but I was concerned this would be underpowered. That block of oak is larger than anything I've ever tried on my current lathe (with catastrophic results), and it handled it perfectly!

So I bought this lathe a few weeks ago and I love it, I am hobbyist and it has everything i need, I also noticed the tinny sound from the stand and watched your solution, What I did was cut thick cardboard from the shipping box, covered it in plastic garbage bag taped them to the stand covering the areas you used Styrofoam, and used expanding foam, the kind that will fill 3" gap drilled a few holes and poof no more tinny sound and a real solid sound should you tap the stand legs. thanks for the idea. going to have a fabricator make me a bed extension, for half the cost of the Powermatic one, I will use it more as a tool holder and turn long spindles.

Deciding between this and the Laguna 220V 1836. Like the PM but it is such a light machine and bolting it to ground not an option so even with a few hundred pounds added to a shelf still makes it inly about 500lbs. I really like the speed and movable controls.
@TheMessyStudio
@TheMessyStudio 4 жыл бұрын
I can understand the concern. That said, at 500 lbs (with the added 200) it should handle anything you want to put on it (over the bed ways at least). The only issue I've had with it moving was what I showed in the video when I screwed up and turned the speed control the wrong way with that out of balance chuck of oak. And I don't have mine weighed down... yet. I have no experience with the Laguna personally, but I have a number of friends who have one and have had issues with them. Billy

Thanks for a great review of this fine PM lathe. I've owned two PM 3520's (A & B) and loved the old mustard monsters. But in my current shop layout, I just don't have the room. I'm thinking the PM2014 will be my next lathe. I had planned to add a piece of 1/4 or 3/8 drill rod to the top of the PM cast tool rest by just brazing with hard Silver solder or maybe even JB Weld. The rod will see mostly compression loads, so this should work fine. Or Just add a Robust that you can usually get for less than $100. I think that's what I'll do... well, be safe out there...kunk

The tool post locking cams on the 2014 are the same as on the 3520C. I had the same complaint you did until I started giving the locking lever a full turn ... releases the cams, and leaves them in place so you can drop in another tool rest without having to finagle them.

Thanks for the review. You've pretty much solidified my decision to replace my Jet 1642 with this beastlet as I do not need the extra height and length of the Jet for what I turn. In your unboxing & setup video you mentioned leveling feet. Do you think replacing them with really good locking wheels would be an issue - My shop is small so I need to move things around occasionally.
@TheMessyStudio
@TheMessyStudio 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, John! Replacing the leveling feet with a good set of locking casters rated at 100+ lbs each should not be a problem at all. In fact, I was thinking about doing the same thing as a just in case. Billy

Thanks billy for sharing about your new lathe and congratulations!!! I’m looking to upgrade as well, but I’m not sure 14” is a big enough step up from 12”. One question I had is what if any are it’s outboard capabilities? That could negate the 2” difference 🤔. Thanks again. Be well!
@TheMessyStudio
@TheMessyStudio 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Mert! The headstock slides down to the end of the ways for "outboard" turning. If you purchase the outboard extension that increases the throw by at least 2". Without the extension and with a floor standing tool rest, you could turn even bigger, but I personally wouldn't try anything bigger than about 20" unless it was a platter or light bowl. Billy
@KennettBTurned
@KennettBTurned 4 жыл бұрын
Billy Burt thanks for your reply billy! That really opens another lathe to the possible list concerning capacity and price. I’ve been looking at a 24” but realistically 20 is adequate. Thanks again! I look forward following your projects on the new toy!
@TheMessyStudio
@TheMessyStudio 4 жыл бұрын
Mert, if you are intent on doing bigger things, then spend the extra money and get the 2020. It's just like my 3520B, but is the Dane length as the 2014. The headstock slides on it as well and it is much heavier. Plus the legs are beefier and you'll need that heft for larger outboard turnings. I wouldn't be afraid to turn 36" outboard on either a 3520 or 2020. Billy

Thanks for a great, informative and to the point review. Hadn't considered this specific lathe, but now i do! Might be the microphone setup, but it sounded above average loud when you started shaping the blank. I noted that the wood was tough and hard, but would you say the lathe bed/legs are more noisy (carries resonance/vibrations) than similar lathes? Noise is important since I am turning in a garage and have neighbours :-) Thanks a lot.
@TheMessyStudio
@TheMessyStudio 10 ай бұрын
The leg assembly is stamped steel (I presume), and while plenty steady, it causes a tinny sort of reverberation sound when turning things. Especially if they are hard and out of balance. I rectified this in a later video by stuffing blocks of Styrofoam into the hollow parts of the stand. It helped immensely as can be seen in all of my turning videos where I use this lathe will show. If you don't have Styrofoam, one can of expanding foam spray should do the trick.
@haraldjacobblixhavnskaarn5833
@haraldjacobblixhavnskaarn5833 10 ай бұрын
@@TheMessyStudio thanks for the follow-up! Sorry, when you mention it I remember you pointing that out in the video itself. I'll check out some of your later videos for reference, thanks! The Styrofoam-solution sounds good, plus being a relatively "clean" solution which can be reversed. The auto-industry has also worked on this problem for a while, so I think "Sound Deadener" mats with sticky film on the back could do the trick. Might be harder to reverse though, as the glue can be very sticky... Many thanks again for the feedback and for your great content.

My pleasure, Mo. Could be, but they are pushing this as a "portable" professional level lathe. While I've found that the lathe is certainly professional level, It is heavy enough that I wouldn't want to have to transport it often. So I'm guessing they went this way for weight. Billy

@@TheMessyStudio thank you some much for getting back to me. Thank you for your video, made up my mind to order the lathe today from Rockler and with the money that I’m saving on not buying the stand I will order the deck extension and insert for my nova chucks.

The tool rack, where do you find something like that

John, it came to me from Family Handyman years ago. The closest thing I've been able to find to it is this: amzn.to/2LcnwLW . This one could be a good option as well: amzn.to/3oyL632 . Billy

Great video but Why was the banjo moving on its own, does it not secure down tight enough, This lathe seems like it has some serious issues.
@TheMessyStudio
@TheMessyStudio 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Richard, but there is nothing wrong with the lathe or banjo. That was totally my fault. In my rush to get going, I didn't have the position of the lever that tightens the tool rest in the right position and it interfered with me getting the banjo locked down. I have since repositioned the lever to the opposite side and everything locks down just fine. You won't see it move in any of the videos I've made using this lathe since. It truly is a great lathe and given the choice I'd buy it all over again! The only thing I would do differently is buy the bed extension so I can use my Elbo Tool. So an extension is definitely in my future. Billy

Hi thanks for your video i purchase the lathe after sign your video i receive my lathe on saturday this month the problem with mine the tailstock and heatstock don't line up do you have any suggestion i call powermatic and the technician the answer my call not able to help
@TheMessyStudio
@TheMessyStudio 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Juan. I had the same problem at first. The technician I spoke with helped me figure it out. The lathe should be perfectly level in all directions or the head and tail stock will not line up. I found that if I adjusted the feet (usually only one or two of them) so that everything was level, it came into alignment. I have not had the issue since. I was surprised that the heavy cast iron bed would twist enough to cause that, but apparently it can. I hope this helps! If it does not, contact customer service again because they will need to replace something. Billy

Hello. I noticed that the motor on my pm 2014 is heated at speeds up to 1200, but if you turn more than 1200, for example 1500, then the motor does not heat up.
@TheMessyStudio
@TheMessyStudio 2 жыл бұрын
That sounds odd, Ivan. I'll check mine in a day or so and see if it does likewise. I do know that three phase motors function better at the inputs they are designed for. It doesn't mean you can't cut that back, but it does mean that they aren't running at optimum efficiency. That could be what's causing it. Billy

@@TheMessyStudio I have two more lathes: jet1642 and 1840. Jet1642 is heated as well as pm2014 at revs up to 1200 approximately, but jet 1840 is not heated at all at any revs. Sorry for the inaccurate translation from Russian to English, I'm from Russia.

Noticed that the banjo kept moving on you. Why didn't it lock down?
@TheMessyStudio
@TheMessyStudio 4 жыл бұрын
My fault completely. I wasn't getting the lock down far enough because I had the tool rest lever in the way. I moved the lever to the opposite side and that took care of the issue. It could have been adjusted where it was, I just didn't take the time because I was in a hurry. I get a little excited sometimes with new toys. ;-) Billy

So I am looking to upgrade from my delta midi would you recommend the PM2014? i intend bowls and such not a lot of spindles really. Do you still love this lathe? and i was thinking of attaching it to my concrete floor

I have a Delta midi as well, Mike. And yes, I highly recommend the PM2014! One of the best purchases I've made other than my PM3520B 15 years ago. I love my 2014! Bolting it to the floor will prevent it walking for sure, but mine hasn't walked on me since I turned the speed the wrong way in this video... lol. And I use it all the time. Billy

No, it has a 14" throw. The 1st number in a Powermatic model number is the distance between centers. The 2nd number is the throw. Billy

Surprised you didn't mention about where the tool rest moved 3 times when you expected that it was locked down.
@TheMessyStudio
@TheMessyStudio 4 жыл бұрын
I meant to, Bill, but forgot until after I watched the rendered video. The movement was my fault completely. The banjo moved a few times because I didn't have the lever down enough (got in a hurry). The same was true with the toolrest itself. I was experimenting with the position of the locking lever and was unable to lock it down due to the toolrest interfering with it (meaning my fat fingers). I finally got it positioned so that I could lock it down. I've since moved the lever to the other side (it is reversible) to further alleviate the issue. Billy

@@TheMessyStudio It will be interesting to see if it gets better. I have a kitchen faucet with one handle. It is the only faucet I have ever owned that repeatedly feels like it has been turned off and yet, still has a small steady stream of water coming out. I have to physically take care to assuredly shut the handle off to the exact middle. As a user, I am unhappy that this is going on. First time in my 72 years that I have ever had a problem like this. It feels like it is off but it isn't. Hope that is not going to happen to your banjo. Regards, Bill
