The trouble with My Laguna 18/36 Lathe part 1

I went to my workshop a couple months ago now to find the breaker tripped, there is an issue with my Laguna lathe. this is part 1 of 2 , trying to fix it.
I have been woodturning since 2013, I love it as a creative outlet.
For me it has been a journey, from my great great grandfathers wooden bowl that i own to my fathers the community or woodturners is great, there is lots of help and support out there available at the touch of a button. don't be intimidated or scared to ask questions no matter how basic, most of all be safe in your workshop, follow all safety rules and guidelines.
use channels such as mine as inspiration and entertainment.
it is recommended to get proper training with power tools to prevent accidents
most of all remember to be creative and have fun

Capacitor failure! The most common cause of electrical failure. I had a go at replacing the caps in two failed TVs last year, one had taken out the rest of the board and was too SMD for me to work on but the other just needed a voltage regulator replacing as well and it was good to go. Fingers crossed just the cap blew!

I too have replaced capacitors on tvs, usually the power board and had great success, will see how this goes

Thanks for sharing this information. I bought a Laguna 1524 this summer and have had no issues… yet. Hopefully replacing the capacitor fixes it. I’m surprised you didn’t dissect the VFD before buying a replacement, especially since you’re an electrician. Oh well, live and learn. Cheers, Stuart

im going to keep the other one anyway and play around with it, I have a 3 phase cnc motor that i may use it for eventually, probably not lol. cheers

My 1836 had electronics that failed twice. I finally installed the second replacement (no easy task), and the lathe worked, but the speed readout never did work again. Also, even with a replacement banjo, it took tremendous force to lock it in place. I sold it to a guy, and spent a fortune on a Robust American Beauty. Now that is a great lathe.

Im seriously considering fixing it to sell and maybe purchase a vicmark VL200 Short ASM EVS, that too is a serious lathe

Yep. That capacitor is so very obvious. Should be an easy find and fix. Good luck.

Thats not good, I recommend unplugging when not in use
