I've taken 2 of these apart about 4 times each now, and yes- These will run 70 mph on the highway with a half ton of sand in the bed, with 2 cracked pistons, all rings seized, and not 2 squirts of oil. Then I re-re-built it with 5 new pistons and all new rings, bearings, and a HO oil pump. Absolutely love turning the key on my '85 F-150. Runs smooth as a sewing machine, even the air conditioning holds a charge and works. It may never go fast, but I can pull a stump at idle and 100% guaranteed to take me anywhere I need to be.

On the way home he just kept shaking his head and saying he couldn't believe they were getting rid of one of the best engines of all time. It's fun, seeing someone finally giving the "Big Six" the recognition it deserves! Good job, guys! I had a 1982 Ford Econoline van, with this engine in it, and I agree: This is the best inline six cylinder engine on the planet. I gained a lot of top end torque, by merely installing a bigger exhaust and down-pipe on the stock exhaust manifold, paired with the factory intake and mono-jet carburetor.(Identical to what was on your engine when you got it) I had the 4-speed overdrive transmission, which was created by changing the 3rd gear ratio to create the overdrive. That meant, the transmission acted like it was a 5-speed transmission, missing 3rd. With the huge RPM gap between 2nd and 3rd, it would "run out of breath" in second, before I could get the RPM high enough, to be in its torque curve in 3rd. The big exhaust solved that, by giving it enough torque band, to cover that spread. I was able to use it to pull a travel trailer.

We had to service a turbo 300 back in the 1980's. It was being used as an water pump drive for a irrigation well and ran on natural gas. The thing was a beast and pumped many GPM. The farmer called us in as the pump had quit. When we arrived the engine was missing. Seems the blow off valve stuck closed and it bootstrapped itself to oblivion. It was a very cool set up and had worked well for years. We installed a small cam small block Ford in its place.

Also, the bigger the turbo you have, the more exhaust pressure you need to get it to work optimally, so going big is not always better, and generally, two smaller turbos will be able to produce more boost than one bigger one (and usually at a more efficient part of the RPM curve). There's a reason these are legendary, if you overbuild everything and ask it to make 100HP all day long it will arguably last virtually forever with decent maintenance. If I wanted to run something like this in a daily driver, I'd go for the 250 HP + 330 FT/LB NA config, it'd still last almost forever and be a damn good motor for a truck application. It was summer 1977 .... An apprentice working for the Santa Fe railroad signal department had just bought a F-150 inline 6 Ford 300 cubic inch and it was a short wheel base all wheel drive getting about 18 miles per gallon with a definite misfire driving from Phoenix Arizona up Black canyon freeway to Flagstaff. As I was riding along to check this rig out it was used and I told him let's definitely get a set of plug wires when we get to Flagstaff. I popped the plug wires on there for him and the next few days we were getting 20 plus miles per gallon on the same highway and we're cruising 60/65 miles an hour. Like I said it's used it's not beat up kind of a dull turquoise green color. Can't remember how many miles it had on it it was pretty clean under the hood no oil leaks. Suspension seam tight no rattles good rebound compression dampening. The wheels were just stocked with hubcaps probably 7 and 1/2 in wide with g something maybe g78 radial tires that you would find on a station wagon. So I said hell let's find out what she does and hit they are royals and see what it does in the sand. And in loose white dry sand like sugar it held its own. Even back then six cylinders were gaining popularity. Just a few years before my 69 Nova won its class and third runner up in super stock at the Indy Nationals ... I can't remember what the guy gave for the truck used but it wasn't unusual price either way but to me it looked like a blank canvas. Today you can still get performance parts from Clifford research places like that I haven't checked but I'm sure you can probably find a lot of stuff at summit racing. It all depends on how you want to set it up to do whatever you want to do. Nothing will replace the sound of a sweet little V8 sitting in the same truck.. but in line 6 have a lot of advantages as you can see in this video. Have a sportsman was just setting up the truck to go hunting with or fishing or whatever and outdoors woods type truck to beat around in with the boy had there on the railroad I believe would be perfect. For one thing if you're out there and places like Arizona and your hundreds of miles from bum f*** Egypt and you got to change a belt or a hose or maybe a bunch of hole in the oil pan you need to get in there and do it now cuz nobody's going to be around for years. You set yourself up a tool kit for all kinds of emergencies pack it away you got a mechanical ability. That little F-150 Ford is like a Swiss army knife you can turn it to whatever horsepower you want and torque to do whatever job you want to have. Pull your boat to the lake. What street tires go play with people on the drag strip. Polish it up put some bling under the hood take it to a car show.. and for people who hate cluttered up dog houses with huge V8 you got lots of room on that inline six do all kinds of anything without busting your knuckles. For anyone into Motorsports inline 6 f150 is your everyday driver it's your bulldog it's your tractor. It's going to drag home you're blowed up race car. It's your family beater grocery getter. Tune it for performance.. make it comfortable power steering power brakes air conditioning tricked out stereo custom cab. Compared to cowboy Cadillacs. It's your mustang off-road sports sedan

This is the Pittsburgh Power method of reducing the peak pressures but still building a lot of horsepower big semi truck diesel engines. I would love to see you at 20 lb of boost would be on 8 1/2 to 1 compression ratio pistons. I had a 1992 Ford Probe with eight and a half to 1 compression pistons and it was a slug. I was one of the 90%. The lucky 10% had a turbocharged version of this car with the same engine and it rocked! Especially by 1992 standards. I was going to say that I really wish they would do less of these esoteric builds and more LS builds but i'm a rotten liar. Bravo PN and vive la différence!

I love the straight 6's, currently in love with the 98' Volvo s90 but also had an older late 80's Mercedes Benz 3.2 that just rocked but the 300 started it all in a 70's ford 4x4 tow truck... glad to see it

That was awesome, i'm a big inline 6 fan. Have you heard and played with, Australian Ford Falcon 'Barra' inline 6 yet? I hear they are pulling up to 2000 hp out of them. That'd make some great episodes. Keep up the great content. Love from Downunder.

What Australian engineers and enthusiasts are doing with the Barra would amaze most US V8 hotrodders. And Australians engineered the LS V12 as well.

@@thomaslawry5238 "What Australian engineers and enthusiasts are doing with the Barra would amaze most US V8 hotrodders" I'm Australian I've seen over 5000hp of a big block in a road car.. Turbo Barras do not impress me it's twin cam six just like ever other twin cam six but way more expensive. 2000hp out a barra doesn't use a Ford crank, rods, retainers, oil pump, value springs.etc etc and the block will most likely shit it's self.

This was probably the most interesting Dyno pull I have seen in quite awhile! I love the engine (I used to have the 240) and would NEVER have expected it could produce that much power safely. Thanks for a great video and now I guess I have to subscribe because you guys seem like you like to do crazy things and i LOVE IT!!

This is an awesome build, makes me think back almost 40 years when I had a 1967 Chevy van with a 292 Six. Wish I had kept that van, all the in line sixes were such great engines, would love to do this kind of a mod to boost the power, crazy Dyno numbers.
