The start to finish transformation of a stock ’88 K1500 Sierra into a lowered LS-powered all-wheel-drive beast. Truck Tech takes their K1500 4WD and slam it with a 4”-6” lowering kit. LT hoists the tired 350 from the engine compartment for a budget-conscious 5.3L LS.

My first truck was a Black 89 2wd short bed regular cab Silverado with 350. Lowered 2" front/rear, American Racing Torq-Thrust wheels, Ceramic coated in/out Edlebrock Tri-Y headers, stainless cat-back, lots of cleaning and polishing. Miss that truck. Best to all.

This makes me really miss my K1500 based Suburban. My suburban was decked out with all the power options, push button, 4 wheel drive, dual gas tanks, a massive power converter system to drive 2ea 12" LCD screens in the back of the driver/pass headrest, a Sony DVD,VCR, Playstation 2, a 15" LCD hanging from the roof for row three to watch DVD/Blu-ray or play a 1st generation Nintendo. The back had a 3cup coffee maker, small microwave, small apt refrigerator, a Panasonic scanner/printer for my laptop in the sudo tailgate office with fold out table and camp chair. Mine was also lowered but only about 3 inch because I had 22 inch wheels. It had full running boards, factory roof rack, spare tire mounted on rear pass door. It had rear ended a simi truck and the entire front clip was swapped with one from and Escalade.

The smart thing to do is NOT swap the diff... use the 4wd lock-in, and if you are making so much power to the front that you start blowing up shaft couplers then get a custom solid passenger side output shaft for the original diff housing.... could easily be that the passenger side shaft from the SS diff drops right in, I'd bet a case of beer that it does.

The auto locking front diff is similar to my old Toyota Surf, deleted that vacuum operated Auto diff disconect, (ADD) by removing the actuator and sliding the dog across so it was locked full time and putting a hose clamp on the shaft so it couldn't slide back unlocking the diff,, then simply taking off the outer hub cap and installing free wheeling hubs,,,,, you have to do this mod to fit any sort diff locker,, in my case i installed a Auto locker,,, from Lokka(that is the companys name. LOKKA) here in Australia,, totally transformed the 4wd into a beast, no tracks it couldn't drive thx for the vids mate .. great content

Manual NV3500 that GM and dodge used in there trucks was not built for power. They were only rated to handle 300 hp barely. They also can't handle abuse either. Though the chevy T56 is a better trans for this situation or go with a older 4 speed Muncie prior to 88. Other option would be a ford with chevy conversion. Good luck.....

It's outstanding and you should get a sample. It has a slight metal flake in it that jumps out at you. Red Subarus are very rare. Mine was a special order and may be a one of one. I’m from an equally small town called Pierre part Louisiana that’s a tad bit north of cutoff but is definitely still very much south. I remember as a kid when this body style came out. It was way different than what the others were putting out at the time. Looked futuristic in comparison. I fell in love with the Sport edition. One of my uncles ended buying a red Chevy C1500 Sport and took it to Mexico. I was on vacation with my parents and that's where I saw it up close for the first time. After coming back home to the US, my uncle ended selling it/trading it in for the Super Sport with the 454 V8. Man that thing looked mean af in all black. My dad ended getting a '94 Silverado extended cab with the 4.3 V6 yrs later. I think if I ever get one of these, I would for a '95 or newer Silverado, with the newer and much improved interior/dashboard, that and it would just be newer.

I'm watching him bolt the axle back in, and thinking "really? Stock?" if I'm going that far, I'm not gonna pass up the chance to add a limited slip in the rear. Eaton TrueTrac FTW. Had them in my Jeep Liberty (NOT TrashLoc, I installed them myself) and they were absolutely foolproof. Even with the AWD transfer case, LSD in the rear will make it much more fun. More importantly, why wouldn't you get rid of those godawful drums in the back? Rear disc conversion and a bir-brake kit would make the truck inifinitely more fun to drive, not to mention safer. And having big red calipers behind those wheels would be perfect. I'm seeing a pattern of boy-racer oversights on this build. Go-fast upgrades NEED stop-fast upgrades. Brakes should be your FIRST upgrade, not an afterthought.

I'm not a fan of lifted trucks and always wanted to do a lowered 4X and just came across your build. Its totally awesome although I would prefer 3 pedals now. That may change if I have to get knee replacement. My '04 Dodge 2500 Quad cab, long bed, Cummins 6 speed only lowered 2 inches. That's all I could do without going into a lot of fab work and it will do for now. I would like to have a smaller truck Inot an s-10 as this diesel is a beast to horse around town. But it will pull anything without batting an eye and gets great mileage even with big injectors and a larger Borg Warner turbo. Well done on the "K".

Wow you got my comment . I’ll tell you why I converted to carburetor because the electronic systems failed bad wire so my 1995 suburban entire wiring system was gutted out . Got my hands on a old wire harness for a 80s suburban and a 4 barrel carb and a ton of mods

I really wanna do something similar to this to my K1500 extended cab. It's special to me because it was my grandfather's. He worked on and rebuilt GM trans for many many years. I can't help but think he'd be smiling up above if i made a unique creation with it.

I also think building exhaust is the funnest part of a build. People look at me wierd but I'm not talking about replacing the Y pipe on a rusty Ford mod motor... I think one place that money is best spent is copper gaskets! Totally reduces chances of leaks. Years ago back in the late 90s I tossed pair of cheap headers on an old sbc and there was a broken stud well chances of a header with broken stud not leaking is usally zero but I used mr gasket copper header gaskets and it ticked like you would imagine but as it warmed up it gradually faded away to nothing and never leaked again! I also reused em several times. The guy at parts store was like these are like $35 you sure you want em and I said absolutely, by time I replace cheapies few times I'm saving money and headache in long run, exhaust leaks suck! best $35 ever spent!

Great work on the truck. 👍 I like it. 👌 Though I personally prefer the classic front look of the original 88' K1500, including it's quad rectangular lights.

I love it. I have a 98 k 1500 I want to do this to. Without the lowering. I like the thought of all wheel drive. Cause I do about 120 miles a day down the highway to work and winter time sucks. I like the older trucks better they suit me fine just like a few upgrades. Like what you just did.

Love this build! As both an Audi Quattro owner and a 4th gen SS owner this is VERY interesting! Great job! Disappointing ending though, would rather have seen it carving up some twisty paved roads... P.S. I’m assuming you can do this to a Tahoe as well?

I’ve been gathering parts for a build very much like this for a few years. I’m using an AWD transfer case from a 2005 Silverado SS with a modified 32 spline input shaft to run behind a 4L80 and 408 c.d.i. stroked 6.0 liter iron block LS motor. Still looking at different donor trucks, but the 1/2 ton 88-98’s are definitely prime candidates.

Did you ever find a shop that make a 32 spline input shaft for a NV149 and if so what’s the name of the shop or what’s the number
@magnumcipher4971
@magnumcipher4971 Жыл бұрын
@@rollintat2z255 I haven't made it that far, but I've had shafts machined and heat-treated in the past for odd transfer case arrangements, namely a couple Ford NP205's to GM automatics, both 27 and 32 spline variants to the Ford 31 input. I've also used a spud adapter with some success so long as the power levels aren't too crazy. I have the 4L80 and the converter built and ready to go but worst case scenario I have a (smoked) 4L65 that might hold up. Just not a fan.
