Before taking all of this apart and doing the soldering, try an EASY fix! Check the cigarette lighter on the right side. I just used a USB adapter with a light to see it didn't work. Picked up a 15A fuse at OReilly's and 10 minutes later, with the fuse replaced for the cigarette lighter, the gauge panel worked again!

The issue I was having was no digital display readings on either displays and no gauges working. Turned out to be several solder joints were broken. No kit required. Once I removed the needles and examined that side of the board it was obvious where the problem was. In fact if you look at the instrument cluster in this video when he has the circuit board exposed (the front side under the needles) you will notice two locations that have been discolored due to overheating. One at around 10:00 and one around 2:00 position. It was these areas that I had to resolder multiple joints. Although I did purchase a kit thinking it was the stepper motors for $30. I did use the kit to upgrade my lights so I am happy I did buy it. So if you are experiencing similar problems you might just need to resolder some joints. 2004 Chevy Silverado.

I just finished replacing all of my stepper motors. A word of caution. Do not attempt this if you are not experienced at soldering and own a nice soldering iron. I have done a lot of soldering in my life and used a $400 weller soldering iron. When I was finished all of the gauges were fixed except the speedometer. Turns out I over heated one of the pins a little to much which ruined the trace on the board. I ended up taking a single conductor from a piece of cat5 and making a jumper wire to the next point where that trace went to and now it all works. My point is that if I had used the standard $20 soldering iron from the hardware store, I am positive that I would have ruined all of the traces. If your iron can’t melt the solder in a second or 2 and you have to hold it there, the glue that they use to seal the back of the board will begin to melt and ruin your solder joints. Not a solution for an amateur. Then again, if your other option is the dealer and a new cluster all together, then I guess it’s worth trying. If you ruin it, you can still always have them put in a new one. If you can afford to be without the cluster and do without the vehicle for a few days, I think the best option is to send it off for repair.

You talked about the problem where all of the gauges go wacky at the same time and you fixed this by changing all of the steppers? Could be but that doesn't make much sense. They would they all go bad like on the same day? Is the fact that one or two is bad is making all of them not work? The every gauge dead problem sounds more like a wiring or connection issue or something on the panel circuitry. This repair is likely to fix my gauges that all died on the same day?

I’ve replaced successfully the motors on three clusters, but I have two clusters that are still giving me issues. I think it may be some surface mount components but I am not sure where to start. The dozen or so resistors need resoldering, not stepper motor replacemey
@GMGaugeRepair7 жыл бұрын
Using a professional desoldering gun is the proper process. Putting tape at the end of the needles is no way accurate.The black colored stepper motors your are seen installing do not hold up and will eventually fail only leading to another repair in the future. 2003 to 2006 models have up to 5 issues: (1)Gauges fail 1 by 1 because of defective stepper motors. (2) Dim or dead VFD displays which are the PRNDL and DIC(driver info center). (3) Back lighting at night dim or dead behind the gauges, not the VFD's or digital displays.(4) Intermittent power issue where the gauge cluster and the entire panel will eventually fail leaving only your back lighting bulbs, blinker bulbs and "Check Engine" MIL lit up. (5) Solder joints and bad parts on the circuit board. There can also be software updates and need to be updated on the circuit board. If you're going to ship your cluster off and want it rebuilt properly with a guarantee, it should be done right once and once only without the inconvenience of inferior experience and inferior parts with no guarantee.

For me, my Guage cluster is stuck at 700rpm, 0mph, 40 oil press, 14 volts, quarter tank of gas, and 160°F and the two little screens at the bottom won't turn on.

Stuck at a quarter tank?? I don't think I'd touch it... Never have to get fuel again!! 🤗 Lol jk'n 😏 I'd check the cigarette lighter fuse... 🤞
@JacobNascar Жыл бұрын
@Kjellmclean I bought a replacement cluster for around $250 with the blue numbers. I love it cause it matches my radio. Funny you mention the cigarette lighter. I let my buddy use my portable tire inflator and it drew the max power out of the fuses. After about 5 min of pumping, it blew out his cigarette lighter. Both of them. I tried to use it but it just popped a fuse. A trip to Pull-A-Part later, got newish outlets and I got a pocket full of free fuses

If you have cluster problems it's not worth trying to repair it yourself. Try AutoXpressTech. They have a $89 Complete Rebuild for Chevy GMC Clusters . That includes all stepper motors, backlighting and fixes most common problems. I also includes return shipping.
@karlackdamack42386 жыл бұрын
Dan, does that mean if I pull my instrument cluster and ship it to AutoXpressTech they will perform the rebuild and ship it back to me ready to drop back into my dash?

My headlights shut off and warning lights on the dashboard come on. Could this solve the issue? The battery and alternator both tested good several times

No doubt it.

So I was adding new gauge needles to my 02 silverado and I didn't mark down where needles were prior to taking them out and now they are all wrong. Any ideas?

What brand OBD 11 reader do you recommend for a 2003 Chevy Silverado 2500HD? I purchased the BlueDriver OBD11 and the pins in my truck do not align for a compatible fit. Called 1-800# BlueDriver and they insist it should fit, returning the product. Is there an adapter cable for the older models to fit the readers?
@mentallyderanged91693 жыл бұрын
You must be looking at the wrong place to plug it in. ALL OBD2 ports are the same make and model don’t matter. You can not get a adapter to make a obd2 work on obd or obd zero it is completely different and those it is just jumping a wire and counting the check engine light flashes. The OBD2 Is not square one side is longer then the other, so it only plugs in one way. I am thinking you are looking at the wrong thing to plug a OBD2 into.

So will this fix a U1000 code in the CAN Network when the cluster doesn't communicate? It says "electronic issues"? Maybe "How to replace the stepper motors" would've been the correct title for this video.

I've got zero warning lights or odometer on an 03 Silverado . and on top of thatno communication with PCM on OBD2and a no crank issue no fuel pump initialization either.Headlights and radio , backlight Dash illumination and courtesy lights still work. should I be hunting for body ground issues?thanks

Very good but you need some experience. My heater quit and the box replacement was $2,200.oo. Now 4 & 8 on the radio does not light up, nor the window & mirror defrost and the Ashtray does not light up. We looked at it today Wed. Oct.-18-2017 and there is no bulb. I think it uses reflected light from somewhere. Any Ideas? Why are the Unions letting such junk being produced? Before Unions we did not have all these problems.
