Lol... name me any Factory engine from the 1960s that was too powerful for a Chrysler 727, Ford C6, or a turbo 400. They all held up just fine, in fact the manual transmissions were more likely to break themselves and other stuff
@darwinskeeper4214 жыл бұрын
This was a fun project but either Marc or Tommy is misremembering their history. I may prefer driving a stick shift but it does have certain vulnerabilities at the drag strip. The 4 speed used in the early '60s, Borg Warner's T-10 had a reputation for being fragile and often failed when used to launch full sized factory super stock cars at the drag strips. This led the big three to develope their own heavy duty four speeds: The Muncie M20/M21/M22, The Ford Toploader, and Chrysler's A833. One of the most highly regarded transmissions during that time was the Chrysler A727 Torqueflite, which was used on the early match racing "funny cars" when they based on cut up compact cars. Now that electronic fuel injection and forced induction have allowed hot rodders to produce street engines with power levels that were undreamed of in the '60s, many of the strongest engines are fitted to automatic transmissions, partly because it is easier to modify a slushbox to reliably handle over 1000 hp at the drag strip than it is to do so with a manual transmission. The other factor is that properly launching and shifting a high powered manual transmission car is limited to gods like Ronnie Sox. The four speed manual transmission is a well loved part of the muscle car era, and a well driven four speed could offer performance advantages over an automatic transmission, but it was not always the best or even the strongest option either back in the day or now.
