I've seen all Morphy games but the way you explain the nuances is fantastic! Such positional games showcase how far Morphy was ahead of his compatriots in his understanding of Chess. Your style of presenting is very simple but at the same time extremely attractive. 👏👏👏

Thanks for your kind words. By the way, I make it LOOK simple :)

Looks like morphy had been studying Magnus carlsen endgames. Brilliant play for the 1800s

I love this side of Morphy you are showing us. I did actually know a couple of positional Morphy-games, but it is always a delight to see it through your eyes, Mr. King.

These last couple morphy games seem quite modern - the grind, the positional play. Really interesting

@Phub Bing I'd argue for the time, when romantic attacking games were the meta, that this could be classified as a grind haha

That's a nice game! Maybe you could look at one of the games of the match against Andersen starting with 1. a3. (e.g. the sixth game). These are heavyweight postional struggles.

These games with Harrwitz were a very good standard.

Another great video! Very cool to see how he works to bring his king up the board for a decisive finish instead of going for a simple advantage-it seems like he was a self-assured player. As is often mentioned, morphy was ahead of his time when it came to piece activity, initiative, etc. I wonder if you could show us a loss by morphy or some game that shows what ideas or principles he DIDNT understand. Especially an idea that might have been further explored and established later on. I am curious about the history of chess style and I think some of his losses could help to better situate him in a sort of general timeline of our understanding of chess as a system. Thanks for the instructive analysis and the thought you put into game selection

Game 4 from this match is one of my favorite Morphy games. Even Steinitz, in his otherwise disparaging obituary for Morphy, called it genius.

Hello Mum: I hope you’re doing well. I skipped the opera and I had a wonderful time at chess tonight. Although, I had some concerns about my light squared Bishop. Paul: This was nothing to write home about. ~Mom

I wish I could see here Morphy's rook odds game vs Charles Le Carpentier in 1849 nicknamed 8-Ball in the Corner Pocket. It's not enough moves to perhaps deserve an entire video but I just like it too much!

Thanks for the critical moment question. I did get this one, but I am not sure I would have realised that the 3rd (/6th) rank was best for the rook.

Another Morphy game is Barnes Morphy, I think game six. It was some philidor countergambit with all kinds of crazy tactics. edit: grammar

On the question of the game I expected ...Nxd5; cd Bxd5+, followed by ...Bd3 looking for a third pawn for the knight. Would that have worked?

This is Morphys best match. After a poor start to the match, he seems to switch chess style - playing positional chess; almost copying Harrwich's style. I've never seem another match with such a clear switch. Maybe Kasparov against Karpov (1st match), to play for draws.

I've gone for ...a6 to try and get the rook on an open file & then somehow dance the Bishop over to the kingside. PS you've been disqualified twice because of your phone!
