John Butler ‘Discovering Stillness - Part 2’ Interview by Iain McNay.
Author of ‘Wonders Of Spiritual Unfoldment’ and Mystic Approaches.’ His loves were farming and meditation. Tells his story of spiritual unfoldment and how he discovered stillness. It was not always an easy path for him and he went through periods of depressions and hopelessness.
‘Realisation is not a personal attainment - it usually comes at times of deep prayer or quietness when the mind is clear of personal me…’
‘I’m just a quiet old man of regular habits going up and down the hill to church each day, sitting on a bench when the weather is warm. I don’t speak much. Adventures are inside.’
‘From worldliness the absolute completion of Pure Being can seem out of touch, more theoretical than real. How can it be relevant to need? Once known however any return to ordinary worldly ways only seem to emphasise its loss.
Total longing brings its own reward but all feelings of achievement disappear. Incomparable gifts of Heavenly Grace instruct, inspire, save us from drowning in the world.’

I was elated by this section of the interview, Ian, because John was saying things that I totally identified with. My mother was Russian and brought me to Australia as a very small child where immigration policy of the time had me put into an orphanage until she could buy a house, which took almost 10 years. When I was released, I had had very little contact with my family, been raised as a Presbyterian, and knew not a word of Russian. I did go to Russian Orthodox Church but quickly became very skeptical about it, and with Christianity altogether and since then, struggled to reconcile with religion over most of my lifetime ... and I tried several. But in my late sixties, my family long dead, I rediscovered Orthodoxy, and entering an Orthodox Church for the first time in decades, I felt a total coming home, among my own people. That genetic connection has been very influential in other aspects of my life as well, even to the kinds of landscapes that I feel at home in. There is, I think, a. powerful genetic influence on our spiritual awareness that is not recognised by most. Studying Jung, I realise that his theories and his work were in many ways strongly influenced by his European background. I was so glad, therefore, to hear John Butler speak so frankly of this cultural influence on him.

What a beautiful spirit. “ The Mind is a Wonderful Master but a terrible Servant “ I agree it’s better to have satan/ego get behind you because it’s apart of you and so where can it go because everything is here? I watched these videos parts 1&2 , three times and I have shared the links with several people . This man speaks so much truth in each statement, it takes time and a re-listening to let it all sink in. He speaks from the heart and he has gained so much wisdom in his 80 years of seeking and finding on his spiritual journey . I ordered his book 'Wonders of Spiritual Unfoldment" I believe he has a message for our generation. He spent all of his life in meditation and I love his concept of prayer which is really meditation by a different name . I especially love his humility and love which just flows from his spirit. I believe he has experienced the divine in such a very profound way , he has the spirit of the eternal Christ realized in his being, and he has so much to teach us. Thanks for posting these videos .

I was , I believe, sent to the discovery of this man at the very moment I needed him… I must say that God came to me in a time of darkness and through John Butler, Brother Lawrence and C S Lewis revolutionized my entire life - as if opening up the light - a magical intensity overtook my soul and through repentance it was in a state of shock but euphoria that I found God through Christ. I thank the interviewer here - I especially thank John Butler and his film clips - but all praise goes to the Light of the World and our Father in heaven. Thank you John, forever. Forever!

I am not a Christian. I am from India. I hear the same words, emotions, the same ideas which I find in Indian and Sufi spiritual traditions. Such a beautiful, beatiful man. Heart, love, no separation. The presence of something sacred; all pervading. There is no dearth of charalatans in the market of inner world. Based on my intellectual experience, this man is geniune to the core. Anyone who listens to this man must consider themselves as lucky. I feel lucky that I stumbled on these videos todaly. I am indebted to KZbin, to the team of Conscious TV and this man. I did find myself in tears at the end. May we all go beyond our petty selves and live a true life worth living. Thank you. Thank you very much.

John is an enlightened being. It is very interesting though, that he realized the absolute reality from a Christian background, what would be called Bhakta in the East, or the path of faith. What he is telling about reality is exactly the same what is taught by Jnana-Marga or Advaita. Either you realize it through faith or understanding, the truth is one.

I like how John describes his travels and compares his physical trips across the world and drifting through the lands in his mind and how you can go anywhere within your consciousness before packing a single article of clothing into your suitcase. What a concept. I'm describing what John said in part one. Great works!
