That was an interesting opening and a very exciting endgame. That neither of them were willing to settle for a easy draw just made it great. Thanks Daniel.

Even though Gukesh is young, he must be a bit tired from the World Championship and Tata Steel. So I can forgive him. However never under-estimate that skiing Norwegian! He is still the strongest human chess entity on the planet. I love 960 chess. Great tournament and coverage!

For now perhaps, but I dont think he was as strong as Gukesh when he was 18 not even close at the same age.

Thank you for the analysis, great as always, and thank you for calling this variant by the proper name: Fischer Random.

Magnus may be the #1 rapid player, but he isn't the current World Champion there either. I know that must annoy him. He may not care about the classical title anymore, but he did try to get the Rapid title. Gukesh definitely seems to be very ambitious with his decisions while playing. In some ways it reminds me of Carlsen's willingness to play on even in the driest positions but he does seem to take it a little too far at times. He appears to be more reckless. That could be an age thing though, I suppose. He is so young. It's more entertaining at least! It's also interesting that NO ONE chose to play Abdusattorov. The former Rapid world champion must not be considered weak by his peers. That will be a true test for Magnus. Look forward to seeing what happens.

yes the reigning rapid champion should have been invited here

I think Carlsen didn't make a draw because he thought that the protected passed pawn would give him a chance in the long run, and he expected that in the endgame Gukesh would crash, especially because he had very little time. And actually this is what happened, and Carlsen is merciless in such situations.

No, it definitively was not. It's full on trash. It's like taking the beautiful game & saying it's lacrosse now except worse & everyone plays with the wrong sticks.

I'm curious. When Carlsen castled and his king didn't move at all, did he still have to start by touching his king? Or OTB can you pick up the f8 rook and put it on d8?
@slickndstylish
@slickndstylish 2 сағат бұрын
i heard you have to take your king and touch the rook with the king to castle

the unintuitive castling rules is the worst part of this chess variant. Two pieces teleporting to completely new spaces by a single castle move, it just goes completely against any other move in the game. feels soooo out of place.
@rhysgriffiths9675
@rhysgriffiths9675 8 сағат бұрын
Might be more intuitive if simply no castling was allowed. I'm sure the games would still be interesting.
@fundhund62
@fundhund62 7 сағат бұрын
What do you mean, new spaces? King and Rook land on the normal castling squares. It's not counterintuitive at all, actually.
@tonyb9735
@tonyb9735 7 сағат бұрын
@@fundhund62 New spaces, in that neither the king nor the rook necessarily end up on the squares they started the move on. I am also a bit unsure about these rules? Are you allowed to castle if there are pieces in the way?
@fundhund62
@fundhund62 7 сағат бұрын
@@tonyb9735 Okay, but isn't that the same with normal castling? And no, the space between King and Rook has to be free, and they mustn't have moved previously. Again, just as in standard chess. That being said, I agree it can look rather weird in some positions. But both pieces landing on the same squares they would in normal chess makes it pretty easy to understand, I should think.

Not convincing from carlsen he's still the no1 but definitely no way is he the goat.

He's in a shortlist of 3. In his own mind he's still behind Kasparov but if he stays no 1 for another 10 years that may change
@tonyb9735

He may not be the goat in your opinion, but there are many people, including several current Grand Masters, who feel that he is. So it's a bit arrogant of you to simply state that there's "no way", don't you think? Obviously you are entitled to your opinion, but what makes your opinion so much more valuable than other people's opinions that you can state with such certainty that they are wrong? Are you perhaps a chess savant, a great chess champion, maybe a learned scholar of of the game? Unlikely, more probably you're just a twat with a keyboard and an internet connection.

@BMWE-hm7uz
@BMWE-hm7uz 5 сағат бұрын
How is that not convincing? Gukesh "offered" a draw and carlsen declined it and pushed through in a not so simple endgame. Blood from a stone, world class endgame play as always from carlsen.
