First puzzle black doesnt have to take the pawn, can just move his king to C6
@justsayin...11582 ай бұрын
You are right, but then after dxe7, Kd7, f6, black can only move their king and if they stop defending the promotion square, white gets a queen and if they keep protecting the promotion square, white can bring their king and force the black king off the defence of the promotion square. It's a bit sad this line wasn't shown in the video.

So in a nutshell: If you have the greater advantage, don’t promote to a queen. If your enemy has the advantage, Queen is the way to go.

My favorite puzzle involves getting mate in the next move, and the answer is to promote to your opponent’s knight of all pieces instead of one of your own. I had to look up the name which is referred to as the “retrograde” puzzle
@BramCohenКүн бұрын
In the first puzzle it looks like f6 is also a winning move but it's more complicated. If ef then e6 and if Kd6 then ef or if fe then f7. If black responds to f6 with e6 then de with the threat of ef and if black plays fe then f7.

@7:45 - there's a game between Vishy Anand and Magnus Carlsen exactly like this - Anand had less material and was trying to trick Magnus into a stalemate, which of course Magnus realized and underpromoted to a knight, causing Anand to resign on the spot.

On the first puzzle, what happens if instead of taking with the e7 pawn, you follow white's pawn back with your king to c6. It seems to me, that you avoid the initial problem altogether. Now, I'm sure there's probably still some way to force a zugzwang in there with some combination, but I can't find it.
@Robert-mx1io3 ай бұрын
White will take the e7 pawn and then your king on c6 will need to move to d7 to stop the promotion. White then moves the f pawn forward to defend the e7 pawn and now blacks king is stuck cause it can’t attack the pawn chain without letting the pawn promote. White then just brings its king into the action
@I3endoubles2 ай бұрын
I think after king to c6 you capture on e7. The king moves to d7 to stop the promotion. Then f6 to defend the forward pawn. The black king is now stuck moving back and forth between d7 and e8 until you bring your own king up.

1st situation. On suggested pawn move black king can simply go c6. Yes, you still can win as white next, but your suggested solution doesn’t work.
@pnoodl3s775Ай бұрын
If king goes c6 then take on e7. If king goes d7 then pawn to f6 creating a chain that the king cannot stop. If king goes to take the undefended e5 pawn then the e7 pawn can promote, so everything is protected. At this point just gotta bring the king and flush the king out

#5 was crazy!! At first, I didn't even register Black's own threat of Qg3# and didn't understand why most of the checks other than Nxf1+ didn't work, but once I did recognize the threat of Qg3# I still couldn't get it because of how difficult Nd5+ was to calculate. After Nd5+, I saw e3 Qf4 Qxf4 Qxf4 Nxf4 Bg2 Nxe2# but also saw e3 Qf4 Qg3+ Qxg3 hxg3 Nf4 g2 and thought it was no good because I missed Nxh3# with the only alternative being Nxe2+ Bxe2 stalemate, so I didn't think Nd5+ was correct for that reason. Then I watch the video and realize I didn't even consider Black responding to Qf4 with Bg2, so I didn't calculate any of that part at all. Just effing insane that one! 😮😮😮😮

Sure the Black King can "Stop" that Pawn from promoting, the problem is that before it can be taken it's going to be defended by the f Pawn and that holds until the White King comes over to ensure the promotion. 😊

You have to capture on e7, then defend with f6. This also blocks the f7 pawns' advance. After kd7 no capture can be made. If ke6 happens then white queens with check. The king is stuck defending against the promotion which allows white kig to come in.
