lol, I always try to guess the move that was played or the best move in the position. At the end I guessed that the best move for black was Rh8, and when you said that it lost immediately I couldn't help but burst out laughing. Great analysis thanks for the video.

Being a Polish chess fan, I watched the entire game plus an interview with Duda on a Polish Twich live broadcast. Two points need clarification here: 1. Time trouble. Actually, only Duda was in time trouble.About move 30 Duda was under a minute and Ivanchuk was well over an hour (!!) on the clock. It looked like Ivanchuk was trying to flag Duda by quickly playing passive, nonsense moves (e. g. wtf was Ke8??). 2. The Qg2 move by Duda. As Jan-Krzysztof explained that was a big oversight in time trouble. Jan thought he was winning after Ng3, but he simply overlooked the Qg4 possibility. Having said that... What a pathetic game by Ivanchuk. After reckless play he found himself under a killing attack having spent only 15 minutes of his time. Still he refused to give any serious thought to his position and instead tried to flag his opponent by blitzing out passive moves (Kf8, Ke8, Bh6...) - something you do to noobs and not to a 2740 FIDE GM! Finally he blundered a piece after 10 seconds of thought while still having about an hour on his clock. And all of that happened in a very important team matchup where his teammates (Kryvoruchko, Korobov) played 6-hour games trying to squeeze water out of stone against their opponents. Ivanchuk showed no sportsmanship and no respect to both his opponent and his teammates.

Thanks for the information. By the standard of the moves I assumed that both were in time pressure! By the way, that very much explains some of Duda's more pragmatic decisions. Ivanchuk is quixotic. He is capable of brilliance, but also capable of some really inexplicable moves. Congratulations to Duda for keeping his head in a complex position even when short of time.

Michał, We don't know the reason why Ivanchuk played so quickly and badly. Maybe he just wanted to flag Duda because he couldn't find any saving resource. I think that after 14. ... Qe8 the position was practically lost for Ivanchuk. He should have played 14. ... Nc4 with equality instead. Maybe he was drunk or sick. I have no idea.

I liked and anticipated this "anti positional" d5 move! Good game from the rising star Dudda. Great analysis as usual.

Duda is such a freakishly strong player, I think once he gets "elected" to be the youngster that is invited to top tournaments because of his entertaining playstyle (like Rapport or Wei Yi were in the past), this guy will cement himself in the Top 10, at least Top 15. He is such an unrelenting attacker, I strongly suggest anyone who is interested in him to check out his matches against Karjakin and especially Grischuk in the Online Blitz Tournament hosted by chess[dot]com. Aggressive, strong calculator that even knows how to be pragmatic and keep control and all this at age 20? Scary!

In fact Ivanchuk had about an hour left on the clock and Duda about 1min, Ivanchuk tried to crack the young polish GM who was under time preassure but it was him who cracked first by playing Rh8 :)

Dear mr King, as someone with 2200-2300 online blitz rating, I really want to improve my chess to compete with the top guys. I know that a common way to improve is by studying master games. Your channel is really awesome as I get GM insights in GM games. For my own study however, which player would you recommend studying games from to help make the step from 2000ish to master level?

Hi Daniel, I am a class C tournament player in the US and I have seen masters and Grandmasters put the Bishop in front of their pawn like Ivanchuk did here. To me personally, that looks very anti-positional. I tried doing that (putting bishop in front of my center pawn) and every time I do that against stronger players I end up losing because the Bishop get captured giving a bad pawn structure and they win in the endgame. My question to you is putting Bishop in front of your center pawn, is this something you would recommend in general or playing position like that is something that comes with experience? Thanks.

Hi mate, try harder...one day the bishop will be as valuable as the pawn on e6.

It all depends on the position. In this game Ivanchuk had already played a fianchetto, so he could do it. Trust your experience and judgement. If it's not working for you, play more classically.

It is kind of absurd how badly Invanchuk blundered in the same game where he played these remarkable defensive ideas. Clearly an immensely gifted player, but somehow not bringing it home. Maybe he just isn't pragmatic enough at times.

At which point do you think that black could have improved? It seemed that he just ended up in an objectively worse position without making any mistakes...(Before the blunder I mean)

Certainly is, it is a game of infinite and here is why: In his book How The Mind Works American Psychologist Steven Pinker wrote: "A typical chess game lasts forty turns Yielding 10 to the power of 120 different chess games. There are about 10 to the power of 70 particles in the visible universe. So no one can play chess by memorizing all the games and recognizing every sequence of moves..........A second cost of information is time. Just as one couldn’t store all the chess games in a brain less than the size of the universe, one can’t mentally play out all the chess games in a lifetime less than the age of the universe 10 to the power of 18."
