Apparently Gukesh lost two games with white last year to Ding. I would like to see those, and hear your comments on these games. Is there something in Ding's playing style that makes his chances higher against Gukesh? Or are those games not very typical, for example because of blunders or inaccuracies by Gukesh? I am looking forward to the match already, and hope Gukesh wins.

@@warnaoh Well, let's see come November-December. I do know that Ding at his worst is a division below Gukesh. And Gukesh is very stable, unlike Ding. At his young age, Gukesh has a lot of growth potential, even in the coming 6 months. It's gonna be an interesting match.

I used to like the Grunfeld but there are so many difficult lines. As a teenager with lots of energy and a tactical style, I remember poring over Hartston's book on that opening. To the detriment of my schoolwork - but that's a different story!

Great game narrated by a great commentator. :) By the way, Gukesh playing very classically can't be a coincidence. His play reminded me of Morphy's(not that he is my favorite player or something) play. And Anand has mentioned few times that he had studied hundreds of Morphy's games. And you can see that in Anand's play too, sound development, pieces on good squares, centralization. It seems Gukesh has been following Anand's style. :)

Because Gukesh seems so mature for his young age, and plays chess with the controlled, patient style of a much older, seasoned grandmaster, it lends credence to the idea that Gukesh is a rare gifted prodigy of the game, in the same way that Mozart was considered a musical prodigy. And this leads me to speculate that Gukesh will indeed be the next great player of our time. Imagine where he will be in 5 years at only 22. The age in which Magnus won.

Gukesh is arguably the greatest thing on planet chess since Magnus appearance ... Honestly, I do not understand why so much hype with Pragg, when Gukesh is the fearless one always going for the win (and 1 year younger)

It seems, that Pragg's opening prep is not as good as Gukesh's.

To see an example, Pragg even outprepped Nepo in the Petroff, while Gukesh made a mistake against Firouzja, got a position that honestly I would be terrified to play with White, and in the end he won. It is his ability to evaluate positions what makes him different, his desire to play for a win.

Gukesh is very cool and has great positional sense. I just think this is exactly what ding does, I suspect ding will manage to do it better in their match, but what do i know i was certain Caruana would win the candidates. Thanks Daniel

I would like you to show a game with Gukesh where he plays white and plays the old Kings Indian defence with f3 e4 and d4 where he plays Bd3. You could do it without Bd3 but then I want an explanation of the blocked Bishop on f1on how to get this bishop into playing the game actively

Nice game. It seems the kids today are less materialistic than their predecessors. Maybe, it's the machine influence; ironically. You see Gukesh play this way, Abdusattorov as well. So young, yet so able to strategically outplay their opponents in quiet fashion. I think I remember when Anand played Kasparov, some said he was too young. Not ready for the challenge. Well, now Gukesh is 17 much younger and faced with a similar challenge. At least he doesn't face a legend. Although, I'm not counting out Ding; despite his recent poor form. If he somehow regains it, he will be quite the challenge.

Magnus is best chess player because he plays chess not to earn money but because He loves chess. He spent his time understanding chess instead of winning- I mean, many players, otherwise use stockfish just to win others by memorising moves and then they forget to understand chess like Magnus does who was always curious in the 64 squared box(not to mention, bobby fisher too)..so basically it's all that whoever Develops connection with chess, whoever enjoys chess more than anything, who quits School just to play chess, is the only one who triumphs.. Also the way Magnus understand chess, if he were to live for 200 years he would solve chess by himself, no need for quantum computer.. That's what makes Magnus the best player.

In a way, it is sad to watch a 17-year-old boy win the candidates. It shows that either 1) the game is mastered in 10 years and all downhill from then on; or 2) it is like the circus, with these child prodigies peaking before adulthood. Sad. Chess didn't die at the hands and wheels of engines but hanged by the rope of the magical circus

FIDE publishes its ratings on the first day of the month. On 1 may 2024, the next FIDE list will be published. In this list Gukesh will be world number 6 with 2763 elo points.
