See how different geras ending in mk11 and mk1, after spending eons serving Liu Kang he seems more optimistic watching over timelines also making sure nothing could go wrong, rather than just give up and sacrifice himself. That's character development right there

Because he saw the difference between controlling and overseeing and the effects of each on the person. That, and Liu Kang treated him as a person and as a partner, unlike Kronika who just saw him as an attack dog.

Given that there is more than One Hourglass which I still think shouldn't be possible but i will give it a plot hole excuse.
