The moment I saw Rain's arcade ending for Mortal Kombat 1, one thought came to my mind. I started to think that despite already being a powerful warrior, Rain had wanted more than he had gained. He wanted praise, favor, and most importantly, the respect of the people around him. I like to think that Rain is not an evil person, but rather he was an honorable warrior who did evil things in the past because he was not happy with the position he was previously in. If only Rain could realize that for himself, then he can truly become a better person that he is now.

I think making him mortal was a good idea on liu kang’s part. If he was still a god, he still would have thought nothing of the lives lost. As a mortal he can understand the true weight of his actions and the value of of life.

I think it's more the circumstances of their lives defined the Rains more than being a God or mortal. The original Rain lived a rough life, enduring lots of hardships growing up which fueled his ambition, while the new Rain of Liu Kang's era appears to have a much better life given he was the high mage of Outworld and even was treated as family by Sindel, it helped give him some humility for him to realize the consequences of his actions and want to make up for it.

If Hotaru was in MK1, I believe his ending would be like this: (first picture has Hotaru looking devastated to see Rain had flooded Seido) "I returned from the battle of Armageddon to find Seido in flooded ruins. Everyone who worshipped me was dead. I was so devastated by such a horrific massacre, plotted by Havik, who had longed to spread anarchy throughout all realms, I vowed that the cleric of chaos would be punished for his crimes against order." (second picture has him bringing Rain before Liu Kang and Geras where Rain begs for mercy) "I'd have also punished Rain for his involvement in many deaths with execution, but because he was the son of Edenia's protector Argus, I decided that he would be redeemed instead, and once Liu Kang and Geras had given me authority, I used the hourglass to travel back to Seido before it was destroyed." (third picture has both Hotaru and Rain forming an alliance that brings peace to the universe) "Now that I had managed to undo the event of extreme devastation, Rain and I have made a solemn vow, to protect all realms, and provide those who pose a threat to Seido or Outworld with extreme punishment."
