Powkiddy X70 Review - The switch like budget retro gaming handheld review

I ordered an X70 as well and got it in the mail a day ago! I knew what I was getting into when I purchased it. I already have a White Edition X2. I like it mainly because I had planned to get a Black Edition X2, but I never had the chance because the Black X2 was discontinued. It doesn't do SNES as good but GBA, NES and GENESIS runs smoothly. GBA games run the best. Has stereo speakers, an onboard multimedia player, save game function, aspect ratio options, a super sleek overall look and a 7 inch display. I like mine!

Haha, we seem to get our handhelds very closely to one another! I think knowing what you're getting into helps with the expectation. I'm still hoping one day we'll have some really great handhelds at this kind of range, as they're getting closer (slowly) but always have various compromises. Hope you're having a great week!

@@Creative4Gaming Yes Indeed! We do seem to have about the same interests when coming to these retro handhelds. I also got the Anbernic Win600 and returned it. Didn't work for me. My classic PC games collection I install with physical discs are meant to be played with a physical mouse and keyboard and can not be played using the onboard joypad that comes with the Win600. That was the reason I purchased a Win600. Instead of the Win600 I'm getting the gray edition RG353P.

@@Creative4Gaming When you say really great handhelds at this kind of range, I'm assuming you mean 7 inch handhelds? So far, I would say the Powkiddy X17 is the best 7 inch Android handheld. I got the X70 as well because I also love a good simple 7 inch Linux handheld that you can just jump right into some retro games without the more complicated Android interface. I'm thinking of also getting a 1TB micro sd card for my X70 to fill it with video media files as well.

Glad I didnt get this one. When I first saw it on ali express I was hoping for an imptoved version of the X2 but instead they made a worse one. Budget device? Well isnt that what the X2 is already?

@@fonzitheman It's basically a reissued Black X2. It runs about the same way as the original X2. I do however think this X70 is better, it plays video files but the X2 does not. GBA emulation is perfect on this 7 inch device,

I would still keep my Miyoo...plays great all the old games! But I'm keeping an eye on future revisions of this one.

I've currently typically taken mine apart and am waiting for some replacement parts so it may be awhile i'm afraid but will certainly wait awhile before doing such things in the future as it wasn't very courteous of me ! Thanks so much for watching :)

I was looking for a GBA system with a big enough screen for my old eyes. Looks like this'll do. I tried the x39 and liked it, but I gave it to my nephew. x70 arrives tomorrow.

Would like to know your thoughs on it. Was excited when I first saw the listing for these on ali express until I read specs. The made a cheaper version of the x2,instead of a bettter one. We already have the X2,why make an even cheaper version I dunno What they could have done is made a slightly better version, keep the IPS screen, add L2 and R2 X51 style stacked should buttons. I would have bought it. Anyway, just annoys me they do this, would have made a cheapish 7" handheld so much better. You can run the A12/13 version of Batocera on it with some issues though, you lose control sticks (only dpad works and it doesnt power down properly, need to put a pin in the reset hole.. Tested on my RS18 and same issue)

@@fonzitheman Well something happened and now they don't know when the device is supposed to arrive. Sorry. Honestly all I want is something to play GBA, and I like the simple OS. It's the same OS as on the x39.

Any chance this would make for a cheap media device? It should play MP4 files right? How’s the screen for sharpness for movies and such? It’s such an affordable device.

I would say if all you want it for is a media device your prob better off with a cheap 7" tablet, the screen quality would most likely be better too on a tablet. But if you want to do some emulation AND media files, well thats diff I guess.

I like the shape too, it's also quite light which makes it pretty comfortable all in all... Just a shame they didn't put 4 shoulder buttons on it at least!

Anyone know how to fix horrible crackling sound on x70. Some roms run great, others are unplayable with sound.

The X39 I believe has an IPS screen yeah, but 4.3". The X51 has an IPS screen,stacked L2 and R2 buttons but 5" screen. The X2 has the IPS screen as well (7") but like the X70 has no L2 and R2. Why cant they get it right. Basically what would be better is 7" IPS screen like the X2,but L2 and R stacked should buttons like the X51. That would be an OK cheapish 7" handheld.

No IPS screen though ,the X2 has. So they made a cheaper version of the X2,instead they should of made a better one. Added L2 and R2 and kept the IPS screen for eg. Oh well.

How can the X70 be better, I know the cpu is slightly newer but it has lower clockspeed and the description for the screen says is TN whereas the X2 is IPS.

I think it's completely down to personal opinion to be fair - I personally prefer the black finish, the joysticks feel a bit better to me and get on better with the firmware but can certainly why others would prefer the X2 and certainly wouldn't recommend an x70 as an "upgrade" over the X2. The missing l2 & r2 buttons are a big L for this one. Can't play a good amount of ps1 titles without them. Nice design & I like how it's thin. However, the buttons are trash. No slider analogs, but it doesn't make up for the rest of the issues.

I have samsung dex and i downloaded lots of emulators and conected xbox or ps4 controller and play old retro games also i have toach screen laptop and portable monitor which makes better

When I first saw this on ali express I was excited. Hoping for an improved version of the X2. Better color (hate the red blue ones) and no powkiddy logo on the front. Thats the only thing thats better unfortunately. Chipset my be slightly newer but its lower clockspeed and worse screen quality. Instead of making a better version of the X2 by at least adding stacked shoulder buttons they again left out the L2 and R2. It may be a 7" budget targeted device but isnt that what the X2 is already? If this would have kept the IPS screen and added L2 and R2 and kept same chipset it would have been an OK cheapo 7" handheld. But instead of making an improved version of the X2 they made a worse even cheaper one. Go figure. Disappointed.

this device is peace of junk. 1. No L2 & R2 Buttons I dont think it has L3 and R3 Button 2. Operating System is terrible like using old OS 3. The Dpad looks terrible compared to Anbernic devices. 4. The Display looks washed out 5. This can only play up to PS1 it will not run Dreamcast or Saturn. Spend the extra $50 get better device like Retroid Pocket 2 Plus. If you want big screen get RG503 I think there $120 now.

NOtTHING in the 50 bucks region will emulate Saturn and Dreamcast. Only exception is the fire stick 4k max, but it's obviously not the best choice for on-the-go gaming.

I think this is some really spot on feedback - thank you! The lack of L2 and R2 really holds back the PS1 emulation (and you're right, no L3 or R3), the dpad has a load of issues and the display isn't great either; with all that said though, i'm glad at least that there's more handhelds coming out on the budget end..
