I write sitting on a couch with a lapdesk on my lap. There's a lamp on the lapdesk (bought separately) and I sit any way that makes me comfortable. Using my favoured fountain pen at the time, I can write for pages and pages and not notice the time passing. I pay no heed to proper posture etc but when I emerged from 'the zone' I move around: go to the bathroom, the kitchen, get something to drink or nibble, fuss with the cat; before I begin writing again. I write by hand only in my journal (an A4 loose-leaf ringbound folder), for everything else I use an AlphaSmart or small laptop. I wrote this on my main laptop which sits on a chair in front of the sofa. Personally, paying too much attention to 'correct' posture makes me too aware of my body and less of what I'm writing.

Hi. Thanks for taking you time to prepare this video. I have a question in regards to holding of the pen. I read somewhere in Palmer's penmanship that when you hold the pen, the top side of the pen should point to your shoulder. Any truth in that? Can you elaborate on the direction of the pen. Thanking you in advance.
@DieyenDualPen
@DieyenDualPen 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Salim, so this video is over a year old and since my grip has evolved to match Palmers recommendation more. If watch some of my more recent live streams kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnSlZqtvo6-dd5o you'll see that the pen does point in the general direction of my shoulder. This change in grip has seemed to happen somewhat intuitively. I haven't made any extremely conscious efforts to match Palmer's direction. So I would say there is definitely some truth to his instruction.

I have been practicing muscular movements writing from the lessons in the Palmer's method of Business Writing but without following the recommendations of the direction of the pen. Since I am having problem to master the Palmer's method and I am not sure is it because of the way I am holding the pen.Do you recommend that I follow Palmer's recommended pen's direction or keep on going with the same way I am currently holding the pen? Will holding the pen as recommended in the lessons from the Palmer's Method of Business Writing make difference? Please advise. Peace.

@DieyenDualPen
@DieyenDualPen 4 жыл бұрын
Additional points of contact, such as your wrist, create more friction than might be necessary for fluid movement. With that said everyone's anatomy is different and because of that it may be better to allow some wrist contact with the table. This is my opinion and I am anything but an authority on this. You'll just have to experiment with what works best for you. Good luck!

My pen sits on my ring finger when I write, not my middle finger. I’ve been doing it like that all my life. Do you think this matters?
@DieyenDualPen
@DieyenDualPen 5 жыл бұрын
As long your not finding the grip limiting I wouldn't say it explicitly matters. I would curious to know where your middle finger is being placed if not supporting the pen. With my writing form my ring and pinky finger touch the page and act as support for the hand as it slides around the page.

Please help!, I use the Palmer method and the recomended height for minimum letters is one-sixteenth, do you use this height in your normal writting? the height of these letters in the book is two-sixteenths in the printed drawing, but for me it is too small, but maybe this is only my perception, please tell me what you do in your actual writting...

So the elbow should have contact with the desk functioning as a pivot? Because I think I heard in another video, maybe from perfectbiscuits, that the fleshy area of the forearm should be the pivot point. Anyway, top notch instructions!
@DieyenDualPen
@DieyenDualPen 4 жыл бұрын
Elbow shouldn't make much if any contact. Depending on your anatomy the elbow may even hang off the table. The muscular part of the forearm is the correct point of contact. David's approach is much more analytical than my whimsical practice. Michael Gebhart at "In Pursuit of Penmanship" is another excellent resource
@jerrywebster7678
@jerrywebster7678 4 жыл бұрын
dieyen DualPen Thanks. I guess one has to make little adjustments for the individual anatomical features. Actually, my elbow pivoting gave my ovals a tad more uniformity. I do catch myself letting the index finger buckle a little bit, probably due to the weird grip on Lamy Safaris, bit that’s all I have at the moment. I’m looking at maybe the Pelikan m200 or the TWSBI Diamond 580 AL. Hey, I enjoy both yours and David’s teachings. DD and DD ;)

@DieyenDualPen
@DieyenDualPen 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, glad the video was helpful. I do have another brief video where I show how you can apply whole are movements to printing. I believe the video as ripped from a stream I did. But essentially the answer is yes but the movement will be different. The Business Penmanship script is based around the oval and it's curves where a print is not. Through study of the shapes you can find what will be your consistent stroke patterns. For print I would say it's mostly vertical lines. Some experimentation I'm sure would get you there quite easily.

I never understood the point of whole arm movement. I have tried it and it makes my writing slow compared to writing with fingers and wrist. I don't find a point in learning the whole arm movement when i can write nice looking cursive with good speed using fingers and sometimes wrist combo.
@DieyenDualPen
@DieyenDualPen 5 жыл бұрын
Back in the day some people had jobs where they wrote and generated documents for 8 hours a day. If you tried to write for over an hour straight without stopping you would quickly realize why the larger muscles used in the whole arm movement style were favored. I once did a live stream where I wrote 4 hours nonstop and in that video you can see that after 4 hours of writing the quality of the writing hadn't been lost, and to be honest I was hardly fatigued. I agree with you, in most settings, at work for example, I will usually write things quickly using combination movement favoring finger movement. But there is an element of line quality that is lost when you use finger movement though. The limited range of motion takes away from the continuous flow of writing and thought. For practicalities sake I will often use combo movement but if I want to sit down and enjoy writing for any length of time I will always choose whole arm movement, it feels and looks more graceful.
@fermiparadox7795
@fermiparadox7795 5 жыл бұрын
8 hours damn that's a lot of writing people had to do. I have to write maximum 3 hours everyday non stop during exams for a week (Day after Day no breaks). However at that time my main focus is writing fast and legible. I am not even thinking about writing beautiful like my usual writing (maybe first couple of pages). During that time my handwriting is not beautiful like usual but however its very fast cursive and still legible. During exam times my fingers do get in pain but that's what all my friends experience during exam time but we survive for a week xD. I cant imagine using whole arm writing during exams i will never finish my papers. Also there are some situations where we have to write in tables or when we have to fill forms where we have to write small and in confined space. During those situations i switch to my print handwriting. I just saw your writing 4 hours "pewdiepie" stream and your writing is a bit slow but its consistent and beautiful. I noticed sometimes when you write "e" it does look like "c" which happens to me and i just go back and finish the "e" loop. I gotta work on it. However your ability to write with both the hands and mirrored writing is just astonishing. I have never seen anyone do it.
@DieyenDualPen
@DieyenDualPen 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah when I was in college I had to take a lot of written exams for art history. I always found that whole arm combo movement served me well. Fast and legible. It does take a considerable amount of retraining to experience practical results. I also feel that writing with the whole arm and flow of thought sync more harmoniously. This is something I had originally noticed through the ambidextrous handwriting. I'm glad you enjoy the videos :)
