Silence is a great one for haggling. I did some garage sale flipping a few years back- don’t argue against a lowball- just look at them for about 5 seconds- about half of people will make another offer to escape the tension.
@brothadrknes47602 жыл бұрын
This works almost perfectly if the person is purposely lowballin you. You’ll feel as if you’re onto them an may feel insulted. Thinkin your silence is you either bein courteous or holdin back your displeasure with their offer they’ll try to avoid losin you altogether by makin a more reasonable offer. I believe everyone uses at least one of these tactics subconsciously, but that's not manipulation. The difference comes when you do it intentionally to control others. Watching this video i realised i often use one of the tactics, which is using logical reasoning to convince someone to do something. It doesn't always result in me winning, and i'm not using it intentionally to manipulate anyone, i just do it because i'm a logical person by nature. I use logical reasoning for many things, even things that help others instead of myself. I also realised that my ex girlfriend used a couple of these tactics, and i think some of them were intentional too, because i always had the feeling that she was manipulative... she always blamed stuff on me when things went wrong. Blaming me was her backup plan when other tactics didn't work.

Joseph Avery I don't see much need to classify the types of manipulations into ethical and unethical. Because *ALL* of these manipulations can be used both ethically and unethically. Hence they aren't lumped together. Some manipulations just SEEM more unethical than others. For example, the "hardball" manipulation seem criminal if you're thinking just about something like a criminal causing physical harm to a person to manipulate them into doing something (unethical). *But* it's ethical, when a parent spanks their kid so that he/she won't steal others' things anymore! (It's for the her/his own good) In short, the ethic of manipulation depends on the situation.

I don't see how charm is a harmful tactic. If i'm trying to get my friend to play a sport with me and I tell them they'll be good and it and I genuinely mean it, what's the harm?
@xxMpEGxx5 жыл бұрын
It can be used harmfully. Some of the tactics are not harmful per se.
@hi-zg2wq3 жыл бұрын
You could use charm to attract somebody to you, for you to later on use them and leave. That is one example.

Im a little confused on #7. If someone makes a commitment to something and they don’t, how am I manipulating them? You said you would be there and you weren’t. I am upset with you. That is a perfectly healthy reaction. I can see that used against someone sexually, but that’s and obvious circumstance. That’s really more abuse than manipulation.
@eletraf Жыл бұрын
Situations can be abusive and have manipulation involved, manipulation is just getting what you want by psychologically pressing, confusing, tricking or getting submission

Nothing wrong with being a manipulative person. It's what you do with your abilities. You can do good with being a manipulator.

I use the logic manipulation tactic. Not necessarily in a negative or bad way, I don’t like to manipulate but I can change the reason to someone’s ideas by using logic. A common example of this would be where I pursued/convince someone to take a little bit more work than me by convincing them that it is logical to make the work load more ‘even’, and if I do it right instead of doing 50% of the work I do about 30%-40% of the work and be lazy. I would never make someone do something completely for me because I like doing things myself, I have a very specific way of doing things and they might mess up in the long run which can make me look bad, or make things worse. Also their are very specific conditions that half to be met in order for me to feel alright using this form of manipulation, if it will hurt someone I won’t use it and if the person is obviously tired/stressed I won’t use it. Regrettably I myself am very easily manipulated because I easily feel bad about doing things. If all else fails you can always beg your way out of going places and make the person feel bad for you by giving a genuine or well thought out excuse.

Learning how to manipulate not to do it but prevent it by knowing what to counter with is by far the greatest dagger and shield one can have especially when manipulation became a thing for almost everyone, not just politicians

I just lost a best friend due to manipulative conversational tactics to get things she wanted; when I called it out, she multiplied it. It was awful. Like being chained and beaten.

I like just staring at people to make them nervous and when they get nervous they get more vulnerable and more likely to give you what you want. And it doesn’t damage anyone so I wouldn’t say it’s unethical
