I'm an old hippie lady that has just picked up my guitar again after 40 years! Somehow I found your tutorials and have gotten so much joy from playing along with you! Never was very good, but in my old age, I'm getting close to where I want to be!! Playing for myself, can't sing, so I love being able finger pick walk ups and downs! Thank you! And for me, practicing is also very personal. I like to just sit down and play whatever makes me feel something. I may play a song over and over, or I may mix things up. The bottom line: just do something! Before you know it you’ll be putting solos into your play and you’ll just automatically get better and better. Just have fun with it!

Great tips. I have a routine for many of these items including weak areas. I always say I'm going record my playing and seldom do. It'd my biggest weak area that I can't seem to solve even though I know its important. Thanks! Bob K

I just found you and I really like a lot about you already. I tried to play guitar many years ago and then too many things happened and I never got around really trying to learn. And now like 50 years later or more I am picking it up and trying again. I have to say this is a first time I felt even at least successful with any of it. I am curious however if you have any print off sheets or if they're all to buy. I only ask because it's easier than watching you and looking at it and trying to replay it over and over and over. I love that you do tabs and chords and I really love that you have a lot of old songs for me that's awesome. I definitely subscribe and want to keep watching you as I think you go into a lot of detail and you're very patient and thorough with what you doing. Thank you so much.

I am 61 and have once again committed to learn guitar. I have joined a "jam" band and it has really motivated me to practice. I was about ready to throw in the towel before I got involved with them. However, I still can't get a basic question answered to my satisfaction. Maybe I can get some help here. They've been playing together for years and I'm the new guy. They will suggest a song and say it's In "G" and take off playing. I have a chart that shows the chords in the different keys, but I'm missing something. Which chords do I play? I know the typical progression may be 1,4,5 but that doesn't usually work. I know not every song in "G" is G-C-D, with a couple of minor chords thrown in. Is there a "magic" formula? Or do is there there something I can do to help me work out the chord progressions?

They already know how to play the songs and which chord progressions are used for which songs. If it's a song you don't know telling you what key it's in probably isn't enough info unless you have a good ear and can see the chords they are playing to follow along. Learn the Roman Numeral Numbering system I ii iii IV V vi vii for chord progressions. Write out several popular or commonly used progressions eg I V vi IV, 1 5 6 4 then write the appropriate chord under each for the keys you would use C G Am F etc. Do that for each progression and key and practive changing between the chords and using different strumming patterns and you will start to hear familiar songs you didn't even know how to play .

@@notjoeaverage Thanks for your reply. I have a handy chord chart tool where I can choose the key and quickly see all of the chords in the key. I need to learn them, as you suggested. I asked my guitar teacher who has been playing for over 50 years and he said he wouldn't be able to know the chord progressions without knowing the song either. (He does have a great ear and no doubt could easily play along.) Your answer helps. I have just felt like there was something I was overlooking. Thanks again.

I feel good after listening to your video, because I am doing many of the same things that you recommended. Lately I have put aside time at the beginning of each day to practice a walking bass (A-D-E) using barre chords. Definitely I am seeing some improvement. I’ve also set aside the past month to work on my fingerpicking rather than strumming. I’m currently working on the song “Hello in There”, John Prine song. I’m using one of your lesson sheets to help me. I usually have 3 or 4 songs on the go. One or two are relatively new (about a week) and I try to pick songs that will challenge me, but I enjoy playing them. A couple of Greatful Dead songs (Friend of the Devil, and Ripple have me working on my crosspicking. Over time I do tire from playing a certain song over and over. I sometimes put it aside for a little while and then come back to it.

I look at practicing guitar the same as working out. Don’t do the same muscle groups everyday. Give them a rest the next day. So I have a bunch of things I’m learning on guitar and not repeating the same thing every day works for me. Mix things up. Them when I come back to a previous practice session it seems a bit easier.
