My great dane/mastiff has a 20' lead that is attached to a metal rail outside my door. I bring this lead into my house and attach him before I open the door. I live on a corner of a very busy street...this way I gain control once he is out and there is no danger of him running into traffic. Once he is out it's easier to continue training and control....however during this time I do the same exercises you recommend I just want no chance for him to get away and get hurt. Love your videos and my guy Zeus looks just like Gus! Thx for all your help....side note I am 64 and feel very safe with my big boy...he was a rescue and I feel blessed to have him

Great tips on dashers and bolters. Our chihuahua mix is a dasher, our border collie/lab mix will as well but will stop when I tell him to. Our border collie /Dane ( we are pretty sure ) mix is just 3mos old. Growing like I have never seen a dog grow before. He is learning quickly. So we have taught the boys to kennel if there is a reason we need to open the front door. We are also teaching sit & stay until we take care of whatever it is at the door. Our Border collie/ lab has also been amazing in helping to teach the Dane mix pup. I so appreciate your tips and demos with Gus. ❤❤❤❤ Thank you again for your videos,

This is so important. My Bouvier puppy recently pushed past me (I wasn’t blocking the door well enough getting a package) and ran out the door. We’ve been working on door manners but have been kind of lax while in quarantine and the poor thing just misses people. She saw a little boy and his mom across the street and that’s what made her run off. So that was not only dangerous for her, but I’m sure scary for the kid’s mom to have an unknown huge dog come running at her kid. 🤦🏼♀️ I ended up running after her and yelling “I’m so sorry! She’s friendly!” And then chasing her for a few minutes in my socks because her recall isn’t great outside. She’s a stubborn 8 month old and it was way more fun to run and play than listen. Thankfully I got her back safely and we’re continuing to work on recall and door manners.

Definitely a scary event. I agree that the lack of socialization for our poor dogs right now isn’t helping either

We had a problem bolting dog. She thought the street in front was her private domain and would charge at people walking by which was totally unacceptable. We purchased a tone/shock training training color. On the day we used the collar I had the collar a low setting. But as some people appeared on the street the dog started watching them. Suddenly she bolted. Simultaneously a car came speeding way too fast from the opposite direction, I yelled to no effect, as I cranked up the setting (there was no time for “fine adjustment;”) I just spun the dial upward high and delivered a jolt. The dog yelped, and stopped in her tracks. She turned and returned to me. I was amazed that that single event, not only likely saved her life, but her attitude was permanently adjusted. From then on I was able to train her with training treats. I also could get her to immediately stop doing things, like going poop in the kids area of the yard, so and move her to the correct area. After she pooped in the correct area I would reward her with a training treat.

Hey!! Love the content you put up here! Thank you so much! Quick question: is Gus a blue Great Dane or a black/mantel that just has a lighter colored coat?

Any time I take our Dane anywhere whether it be a walk or a car ride I only let him go out the back door into our fenced yard. He know to wait at the gate. Our front yard isn't fenced so even though he is well behaved, I don't want him to associate the front door with anything fun (except Mommy and Daddy coming home).

hello! how old do you recommend training great Danes, with this type of training?
@GreatDaneCare4 жыл бұрын
As early as you want! It’s way easier while they’re “small” 😉

Could you give ideas on how to handle when you have your dog out, be it on a walk or anywhere, other dogs with poor socialization and or out of control that you can run into. Here we have a leash law that tends to be ignored by people with poorly trained dogs who are often nervous or maybe just aggressive. Obvs I can’t pick up my dog soo.. trying to avoid this (again) to keep positive experiences.

Can you plz give us tips what happens when your dog scarches you (sorry if I spelled wrong I’m only 9 and I’m bad at spelling)
@keevandeurs10044 жыл бұрын
Do you use a command, e.g. stay, wait, place, while opening door....?
@GreatDaneCare4 жыл бұрын
Sit is a great starting point so that they’re less likely to try and bolt through. Wait is a little bit more advanced but equally useful
