The "foot machine" is called a pedalboard. It contains a number of foot-activated switches for changing the sound of the guitar. The big wide one Ren is using at the beginning is called an "expression pedal" and Ren is using it to activate an effect called "Whammy" which is a kind of pitch bending effect. Ren also later uses a looper on his pedalboard, which records short samples from the guitar as he plays it, and then plays then back in a loop so he can play other parts over the top of it.

That's not wha wha, it's a whammy. Wah wah is a band pass filter that changes the frequency spectrum of the signal without changing the fundamental note. Ren is using a whammy, which is a pitch-bending effect.
