Nice sentiment about the video frequency! Aiming to do Monday nights (6PM) with some regularity, but its nice to rephrase it a differently like your alternate perspective to calm myself. I couldn't be happier with the new Prado, it's turning out great! A bit of hassle this year sorting it out, and its paid off. Cheers to more exploring to come.. Hope the Pod is going well - definitely reckon you have the right idea. This years problems have put a setback to our trailer plans.

Went through this earlier this year with my 90 while away so feel your pain mate. Really difficult to call it quits while the car is running and you're making ground. Glad you got a new one, 90s are the goat.

The 1KZ-TE is a great engine. I think with this new one I'll change oil every 5000km to do my best to prolong the life. Was yours a petrol or diesel? I think you'll like what's coming on the channel. Cheers mate! GOAT Agree!

I changed the oil and oil filter every 5 and it likely helps but I think my problem was an old radiator which a couple of months prior had a transmission line blow off it and dump the tranny oil on the road. Also wish I had done the remanufactured the injectors and got new glow plugs earlier. Apparently beyond that stuff a 3 inch exhaust especially the dump pipe pulls a bit of heat away.

Some good communication tips there mate. Couldn't agree more, but I think we did pretty well given the situation, and slowing down and taking stock was a good way to ensure we had a clear path forward. So key to have a way to communicate with the outside world, even more so as you said when solo.

Welcome back Dan! I have missed your videos, so l am wrapped to hear there are more in the pipe line. Hind sight is a double edged sword, you can only make a decision based on what you know and what is happening at the time. Your advice re trip planning and preparation is sound. Feel for you there Dan about the Prado., am sure the kids will feel gutted as well, as she is part of the family. What ever option you have taken, wish you and family the best! Still curious to find out what happened to the engine😅. We exchanged messages in your old Prado walk around video last year about head and coolant, could be related? Hi Aero, I remember those comments! Thanks for support and taking the time to watch and then comment. Means a lot to me. The situation took a while to sink in - for example we brought our daughter home from hospital in that car. Just have to treasure the memories... I think the Grey Dingo had an engine compression issue stemmed by crack in the head as discussed, which was the cause of burning coolant at times. But through band-aid fixes like coolant additives, I was able to keep it at bay. What happened this year was definately another more acute issue that led to quick failure. I was so accustomed to driving the Grey Dingo, I probably didnt notice the subtle loss in power as the engine slowly deteriorated. I think if I own a 1KZ again (hint😬) I will change oil every 5000km. Sorry to hear your troubles. I had been in the same predicament somewhat with my 1st 90 petrol prado. It blew a head gasket and I thought the cost of fixing it was not worth it as it would have cost me 3-4k. I ended up selling it to a wrecker, and got lucky with picking up another 90 at $5.5k with much better condition in terms of suspension, engine, interior. And plus I don't run into the risk of problematic rebuild! You can see it in my channel. Toyota modern diesel is a bit of a grenade. 1KZ crack head, and 1KD can die of injector issue. You can see numerous videos of people talking and selling injectors for these. 1GD have DPF issue. So if you really like diesel, maybe get a Pajero NW with 4M41 3.2 engine. Find one with no DPF (they were in and out across the years). I do like older Toyota diesel and own a 2H Troopy. I do like the 3rd option and would love owning an FJ cruiser with the original 1GR engine, but the cost is way too much these days In essence maybe just remove the risks as much as you can. This includes rebuilding the engine or getting an implant. As there are so many vehicles out there for sale. I do agree the 90 series value is hard to beat in terms of price, space, comfort, fuel capacity (very important!). Put a rear locker and it's an absolute tractor.

@FirstLightAdv Thanks heaps for taking the time to watch and writing such a thoughtful comment. I learnt a lot, and agree with your sentiments. My friend Matt has the 2H, and I drove it recently on a trip - it's funny you call the 90 a tractor because he calls his 2H 1987 Troopy 'The Tractor' and that's what it felt like to me after being used to the 1KZ. It felt bullet-proof, slow, and powerful. I think of the 90 prado 1KZ as a 'billy goat'. Mid wheel base, mid width, with that centre diff lock it just 'slow and steady' climbs most obstacles. Works smarter not harder. Before the Grey Dingo broke I was planning to get a Harrop e-locker in the rear. More for insurance, and keeping up with 33"/3"lifted mates with mud terrains and lockers ( I usually can anyway though). I'm more about the destination and camping, rather than the chest beating that goes with a large part of the 4WD community. I think the 90 is capable and great value for money. Thanks again. @@OTWD the new ones are really comfortable and easy to drive. They don’t feel like a Ute. Plenty of space to store in the rear with a fibreglass canopy.

Hey mate, recently replaced my head in my 1KZ 90 and considered rebuilding the engine for the hell of it while I was there so I do have some pretty recent price guides. I paid about $1500 for a complete head and VRS kit, and was quoted about $2200 for a rebuild kit using genuine pistons, rings and rods. Can pick up an unknown condition engine for about $500 tops, and I'd allow a grand for machine work. Allow some wiggle room for consumables, oils etc and you're in about the $5000 mark if you do the labour yourself. I'm a mechanic by trade so the labour isn't an issue, but ultimately time constraints led to just replacing the head considering the bottom end condition was fantastic. At the end of the day they're a brilliant car, and mine has a lot of sentimental value to me so spending 5 grand on a new engine is something I'd consider, but everyone's situation is different and this figure can blow out depending on any other work you'd do while it's apart. Hope whichever avenue you pursue here becomes a great experience for you mate, best of luck

That seems relatively cheap compared to what I have heard around the place. Thanks heaps for sharing. One day I might attempt at this kind of work myself but not right now with everything else happening in life. Very envious of people such as yourself that have the skills and experience to get it done - I don't underestimate the work involved. It seems very time consuming, even for experienced people, which I reckon is why many experienced people shy away from it unless the $$$ are worth it. I guess you don't know exactly what it's going to cost until it's in pieces. They are a great vehicle, and excellent value. Thanks for your well wishes mate - I think you'll like the way it's gone! I'm late to the party but just want to say you did not make things worse by trying to get it home. The expensive damage was done long before the climb when it decided to go limp. The long steep climb would have really raised the EGT to levels not seen before which caused the limp mode to set. These engines are known to have some unreliable components that fail, like injectors leaking causing cylinder oil to wash away wearing rings and bore scoring, and overheating causing pistons to crack and/or burn.

Really tough break mate. There is a Diesel mechanic channel on here that really seem to know their stuff, are always doing Prados etc and talking about issues with the injectors etc. They seem really knowledgeable but I'm no expert. Their channel is Fourby4Diesel. Not sure if they're in your state but if I was buying second hand I would certainly be looking at getting the injectors sorted and the whole thing checked over as it appears to be a common problem. I watched a video from a young couple with a Prado like yours that crapped it's engine and they chose to put a brand new one in it. The cost was not that far off what I paid for my demonstrator Pajero Sport about 5 years ago. Sorry I can't be of any real use with this but I hope you get it sorted and can get back to doing what you love. Cheers.

@@OTWD No worries mate, my pleasure. I suspect that you've picked up another Prado so I thought that the other channel might be useful. My Sport has been faultless but then again it's done very few k's and gets looked after very well. I've done a few mods but I tend to avoid flogging it as I have nothing to prove and the bills can be expensive if you break things. I think that a lot of people assume that diesels are bullet proof and can be treated as such but modern ones are far from it from what I've seen and if you get it wrong it can get very hard on the wallet. Hopefully you get back out and about soon as I enjoy your presentation style. Take care and best wishes to you and your family.

I wouldn't take a newer (more $$ )vehicle on the tracks I like doing - that's partly why I love the older Prados. Mid size for daily driving,Large tanks for long trips, comfy for family, able to load it up if required for camping, and when I need it to it's a weapon on technical tracks. But still...I don't like to break things either! Any modifications to a vehicle need to be highly considered, as you start working against the engineering design. I dislike the term 'building' a vehicle - it implies we know better than the OEM and they 'half-built' it. You never make your money back, and any weight/change in aerodynamics means more cost for every km travelled. And accelerated wear. So I'm with you. Glad you are here. Cheers.

Mate, 90 Prado with a 3RZ! Seen em do 500,000 kms. Would be in top 5 most bullet proof engines Toyota have ever made. Totally over engineered and under stressed.
