I've been thinking of getting this game for my dad's birthday, since he grew up on D&D and "The Forgotten Realms" books. I got him the PS4 "D&D Dark Alliance" last year, but it was bad, and we couldn't couch co-op like we did with the PS2 "Dark Alliance" games. This, however, looks much more promising. I wanted to see video footage on how PS5 couch co-op would work before I also decide to purchase a second controller, but it looks like it will be. Thanks for posting this.

We were trying to play split-screen on the PC version's launch day. Based on the patch notes, it seems Larian fixed the issues rather quickly, within about a week, but we'd already given up on doing the co-op series at that point.

That was a nice fight at the helm, there. 👍 One thing to check, I think looting is a free action in BG3, so you might have been able to loot the commander's sword straight after he died, and used it to whack that mindflayer.

Yeah looting is a free action, so could have picked up the sword, but equipping takes that turn's action. Might be worth it in this case though due to how good the sword is.

Funny you say the dark urge is not a good one to start with considering originally the dark urge was going to be the only option before they added custom and other origin characters which makes sense when you look at how much more playing the dark urge adds to the story

For the cost of an action you could have equipped the sword in the middle of combat, might have been worth the extra dps, not sure, also the throwing action is on the wheel, just think of the wheel as divided parts of the actionbar you get on pc. It does seem that Jynx has double speak to animals atm if i saw correctly

Yeah I think it would have been worth it given the much higher stats of that sword. And yeah I was thinking that Jynx's race already gave her the speak with animals, but she insisted that she needed to select the spell lol :D

I will be playing next weekend with 3 friends on PS5. Should we play with 4 created characters or 4 origin characters? I heard origin characters get special story and items?

Yeah origin characters have some extra story content, but the developers recommend playing a custom character for your first time because it's nice being able to fully decide your character's backstory and their role in the world, rather than have that predetermined. And I would agree with this, it's good to have a story that is entirely yours for the first playthrough, and then try an origin character for your second campaign. This also enables you to know what's different in the game with that origin, since you've already experienced the base game. But if you're only going to play the game once, or you just really want to see an origin character's full story (as you only see part of their story when they're your companion), then by all means jump in as an that character :)

How did you move the gamer tag to the right side? on my game it covers up my map because it is on the left side of the player one left screen if that makes sense.

She simply signed in, I entered the character creator, and then I think she joined by pressing the Options button.

Were you able to finish the game in couch coop mode? We have freezing issues all the time since we reached chapter 3 and can't continue the game. Is that a common problem or just for us?

We decided to restart, but haven't got out of chapter 2 yet. There's been some performance issues even that far though.

Are you sure? I've played entirely through the game as a noble and didn't have a single unique dialogue option, despite there being many places where it would have made sense. Jynx has played halfway through the game as an acolyte and I'm in Act 2 in my 2nd playthrough as a Charlatan, and in neither of these playthroughs has there been any unique dialogue choices. Would seem strange that with three different backgrounds we've never seen any effects from it.

No, you can split the companions up between the two players in any way you want. So player 2 could be the one controlling 3 characters while player 1 only has their main if you wanted to play that way.

wish there was a way to unspilt the screen onto two separate screens. There used to be a way to run a splitter on older consoles. I have yet to find or see the option on the ps5

We haven't tried it yet, but have you looked at the group functions that are accessed with the L2 button? L2 opens the screen where you change the active character you're playing as, but with the square button you can set up groups. I assume that assigning a companion to your girlfriend's group would result in her controlling them.

Yes you can split the group, press L2 and group it

A follow up, seems that the way that you assign characters is actually by hitting the "Options" button to open the menu, and then selecting "Multiplayer."

If you guys are playing on the same console make sure your using the same contoller type, then hit multiplayer and go to LAN at the top of the screen and press x on the second controller

No, that's for online multiplayer. Split-screen is started with a new game, and then the second player joins by signing in and pressing the "Options" button on their controller in the character creation screen.

The second player doesn't save their game, only player one (the host) will save. When you want to get back on, the host player will load the save, and then player 2 will simply press the Options button on their controller to rejoin as their character.

Framerate drops quite a bit during Act 2 and 3, alongside some screen tearing, not sure if the devs will patch any of this sooner or not

Performance has been great so far. However, in the PC version the performance was great in Act 1, and wasn't until Act 2 & 3 where I started seeing framerate drops. I'm not sure if the comment above is for the console version or not (if it is, damn he got through Act 1 fast lol).

@@NECROPOLIS000 They said that specifically about the PS5 version? Because the game just came out yesterday on PS5, so I'm not sure how they've gotten to Act 2, let alone Act 3. This was true of the PC version, but there has already been several large patches that have vastly improved framerate (though still bit of an issue).
