Prairie Dogs have the most sophisticated language next to humans. According to a BBC documentary on them, research has found they use sentences, with adjectives and adverbs, describe speeds and distance of approaching enemies and colors of human clothing or other animals. They're pretty amazing! Yes, they are very social--and intelligent--meaning: they take a lot of personal care. They are like parrots and want you to interact with them constantly. Pay attention to me! is what they are constantly saying.

I have 5 acres of pasture that have become a prairie dog village. I hear that they will destroy the pasture, but, considering they have so few habitat options, I am letting them have it. Maybe it is good in the long run to have the ground dug up with deep caverns.

@owlowl1884
@owlowl1884 Жыл бұрын
That has been raised as a concern and my understanding is that it is very rare for a horse or cow to break a leg because the holes are so visible. Wouldn't run a horse through a pasture with holes for sure, but on their own it is said that they coexist well.@@zachaa2846

the 3-5 year lifespan applies only to life in the wild, and pets will live up to 8-10 years if they're fed properly and protected from falls and injury. they really are great pets, friendly and affectionate if you treat them right. however, they will destroy everything in your house.

Loved our Dog "Dusty", he was an awesome companion. Taking care of a PDog properly requires a tremendous commitment and love. We don't like to confine any animal to a cage so our Dusty had the run of the house whenever we were home. In our experience you can't leave them unsupervised for extended periods. At the end of the day my wife would tell Dusty "Dad's home" and Dusty would race to the door to be let out. He would greet me in the driveway. When he was ready for bed (at dusk) he would go to the Foyer that was his signal he was ready for bed. He insisted my wife tuck him into his bed so she would say "Let's go to bed", he would follow her into the bedroom and climb into his bed. He slept in a small dog crate next to our bed. As soon as he heard one of us come to bed he would leave his bed and climb into our bed to sleep with us. He was trained to do that. We learned the hard way that you can't have a PDog in your bed unsupervised after having to replace the sheets multiple times because he shedded them. They have boundless energy so if you have your PDog in a cage for extended periods, give them something to destroy, it keeps them busy.

Prairie dogs are one of the only non-reptillian and non-invertebrate wild animals I've seen that actually make really good pets. They are so sweet and docile. They seem domestic even though they're not. Normally non-domesticated mammals just don't make good pets. Sugar gliders are another good pet mammal I can think of that I... think isn't domesticated? Not sure, maybe some are. Point is, these animals are absolutely a hidden gem. I wish I could get two of them as pets.
@IntrepidExotics
@IntrepidExotics Жыл бұрын
I hear the term wild animals misused often, especially regarding reptiles. Although species can be described as either wild or domesticated, that description is fluid and not tied to the species. There's wild dogs, there's domesticated dogs, ect. Every species began "wild". From there we define domesticated as an animal that has been bred into captivity for multiple generations to the care of and for the interaction with humans. Once that happens, those individuals are no longer described as wild individuals and are by definition domesticated.

This is so cool! I remember going to Animal Adventure in Harpursville NY when they first opened up and all their Prarie dogs had burrowed out of their enclosure and would pop up all over the property! I thought they were the coolest things. Obviously they can't have them free roaming here in NY so they did round them up, but it was a pretty neat sight walking down the path and seeing them pop up next to us

try not to discipline them in any way; instead make whatever destructive behavior they will want to do impossible. they need watching constantly when out of their cage to keep them from biting electric cords or other things. touch and pet them as much as possible. my pd insists upon sleeping next to me in bed ! protect them from climbing too high as a fall can easily lead to life-ending injuries. give them some cardboard to shred in their cage every day or two. to stop bad behavior with my little boy i can loudly shake some newspaper, and the frightening noise will make him stop.

Grew up doing animal rescue and always wanted one. Bummer to learn about the lifespan though. FYI, rescue a common gray squirrel and take care of them and they can do better than 20 years. Just make sure you a have a companion animal for them. Cat or dog, or ferrets are good. Cuts down 90% of the problems if they have another pet to play with and occupy their time.

I just found out we can have prairiedogs as housepets in netherlands but only the short tailed prairiedog but on forums many people say you cannot its no housepet and they bite But other people respond with dogs bite cats bite rats bite hamsters bite mice bite gerbils bite horses bite rabbits bite the list is almost endless exept they forgot ferrets!And i can guarantee they bite prices in netherlands seems to be 150-400euros the ones you pay 400 for are already more than a year old and hand tamed so when the time comes I will get a young male prairiedog I dont care if i get bitten once they learn to trust you they dont bite you It is just over 15 years ago I had a staffordshire bull terrier called raider a black cat called fred and a big brown rat called john and they were all friends so i think i am qualified enough to look after a prairiedog i think in my life i have had nearly all of the animals on the list that bite including an irish gypsy horse that i had to catch on a field of about 300 acres to get him from his mother And the worse one on the list is a ferret they bite hard some of the breeders here say you cannot take one prairiedog you must buy two That seems to be disproved by you tube!They seem to be ok with a loving owner.Poppy on you tube seems to be very happy.

I've had both and I thing prairie dogs, they are much less messy than ferrets. They can be more socially finicky than ferrets but with the right amount of bonding time they are great

I am two minutes in and hit the like button and subscribed. I for the first time in my life am without my fury family after losing my last dog three months ago. In 53 years now I have never been without my furry family (mostly dogs). My heart is broken and I feel lost. I have come across other videos of prairie dogs and wow they are so cute. I am now wondering if having a couple for pets (so they have playmate) is responsible and rewarding for them (most important) and also me. I want to research the possibility to find if this is possible and responsible for me. I will not own an animal that I can not care for and nurture. If you have any advice I would appreciate it. Thank you sir. I also am wondering where you can adopt them as I will not support any "backyard" breeder of any species. I have 0ne last edit here! I just left this video to look at the rest of your video thumbnails... Please do not feed these to your snakes!!!! OK I get a feeling from your video you will not consider doing this. Wow beautiful snakes! I started with garden snakes, bull snakes and then moved up to red tail boa and bermise python. My last snake was ball python (seemed like worm compared to the boa and other python). Snakes are such and lizards are such beautiful creatures. I am so glad I found your Chanel!

So sorry to hear about your pup, there's not many worse things than losing a dog for sure. As for prairie dogs, they can be awesome to work with and will definitely keep you busy. I know there are some prairie dog groups on facebook that can be good resources for them for both breeders and learning about keeping, I need to do a deep dive into these guys but the reptiles keep me busy! I will be putting a more comprehensive video together about them at some point though because there's a lot of interest. You're welcome to catch me on Facebook messenger or Instagram and I'm happy to help any way I can, welcome aboard!

We typically don't give them much as a majority of their diet is Timothy hay, but we keep some banana chips on hand as treats. They can things like Brussel sprouts, kale, and sweet potatoes too but in very small portions and typically as treats.

Understandable position, but human habitats and animal habitats are typically different. Often caging may seem unpleasant but it's almost always an attempt to recreate the natural environment for the animals on a small scale. Prairie dog enclosures give them a burrowing-nesting spot, prevents them from being hurt by household hazards and from destroying the house which they will notoriously do. They have daily interaction, are let out under supervision and kept in caging where their needs are met. Just like I can't just leave my reptiles out because they have heat-humidity requirements that require an enclosed space to regulate properly. Plus free roaming large snakes and small mammals together is generally bad. Oddly enough this only comes up with exotics, many people will keep their dogs Kenneled all day while they are at work in cages with barely enough room to turn around yet this is considered an acceptable practice by most.

While they are cute as the Devil people think they should be taken from the wild, they are so easily tamed. Don't take them from the wild! I would hesitate to get them used to humans in the wild. That never seems to be a good idea. If you own land in PD country, clear the land of all underbrush. Only grass land is suitable for these guys. Just one mesquite tree can allow a coyote to approach them.

@IntrepidExotics

They do, we have a male and female here which is perfect in captivity. They are very social with each other and humans but like any other animal, cohabitation of more than a m-f pair can result in aggression so I just feel better keeping 2 together. It's not healthy for them at all to be kept alone though because they are very social.

Me and my families first prairie dog we named her Prairie she was a pup when we got her from the reptile store man oh man how I miss her she became fully tamed after I had an argument with her in my old pick up truck I simply told her I just want to carry you and care for you She was arguing back with me with her hands and her teeth after that argument she became fully tamed kind of weird crazy and awkward but it’s a true story she bit me from the beginning at the store but she did not bite my wife she lasted with us for about five years until I believe she caught ondontoma this is where the teeth grow through the nostrils and block their passageway for breathing through the nostrils it caught up to her very quickly I only had two days to react thank God we were able to spend the last day and hours with her I cried and stood by her side but it’s OK because I know I will see her in heaven we think this is the end but it’s not it’s only the beginning as of now we have had multiple prairie dogs we are down to one female we are in the process of looking for a male never had the opportunity to witness Prairie dog giving birth definitely would love to have multiple babies but very difficult
