I remember reading this in SOG and thinking it was a little more elaborate than this, but for a six man outfit, this looks like it’s pretty damn effective. It reminds me of some retreat drills I’ve read about in the musket days.

To see AI behaving in this way is very cool, well done! The group I play with (XDF) uses these types of maneuvers all the time.

Thanks man. I think it has potential, but still needs alot of work. One use case I can imagine is a single player Immediate Action Drill training mission, where player is on the AI squad as well, and has to play his part in turn. Another scenario could be player starts out as new 1-2 on team, following AI leader, and later takes over team when leader killed...

Thanks buddy. You make slick well thought out missions. A little scripting may be required here and there to add some cool feature you want, so start there, and ask for help on the BI forums. Lots of very helpful scripters there.

Awesome work! If you’re a fan of SOG Tactics and you’re done with Plaster’s fantastic books, “Special Reconnaissance and Small Unit Patrolling by Ed Wolcoff” just came out this year on kindle. The hardcover isn’t out yet but that book goes into very granular depth on how Ed liked to run Recon Team New York as well as some historical examples.

Thanks for kind works and the hot tip. I'll download the Wocoff book tonight! I want this to be as authentic as possible so that book sounds great.

Absolutely, one thing that I’d like to impart is that Recon Team Leaders had a lot of freedom when it came to training their specific team so each one has their own flavor of immediate action drills, so it gives you a little wiggle room in terms of realism. One question I have for you is this, I want to make it so whenever the enemy gets close to the player in the jungle, the ambient wildlife gradually goes silent, do you think this is achievable?
@johnnyboy8657

@@millersmarauders6612 Not sure about turning down ambient wildlife, its worth looking into. One thing I have thought of is triggering occasional louder footstep sound, or vegetation rustle noise on near as-yet-undetected enemies, and have AI sog team react (i.e., stop, look, wait, listen). That's in my queue. We can also script occasional bird flush from bushes as any unit gets near.

@@millersmarauders6612 Found it. community.bistudio.com/wiki/fadeEnvironment We can do a check if player in forest and enemy moving nearby, then fadeEnvironment to lower ambient jungle noise. Good idea.

@@johnnyboy8657 Oh Nice!! The authors mention the jungle "closes up" when they move or move too fast, hence the move ten minutes then stop and listen for ten minutes or variations of that tactic. I'm surprised a sound script like that wasn't included the initial release.

Thank Reese. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the team to survive well enough using this script, which made it not playable enough. I guess it would be ok for making a cinematic sequence though.

May I ask how to write this script? Can you publish this script specifically?
@johnnyboy8657
@johnnyboy8657 11 ай бұрын
I never published this script. It was too complicated to work well in many settings. But it is what inspired me to create the SOG AI mod eventually. I'm afraid low level control of AI to execute a true "peel back" break action is not possible with ARMA. As a compromise, I built the Leapfrog capability in SOG AI where your AI squad is divided into two groups, and one moves while the other covers and shoots. In Break Contact situations it works pretty good because the AI will also throw more grenades and some smoke to cover their retreat.

This is awesome. Also your CQB stuff. The way units move and stick to their formations is just impressive. I think based on your work even combined arms tactics like in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHescoJ9nMaZoqs would work. Like sticking to the Pandur like the soldiers in the video. We are total coding noobs but the way how most AI mods and scripts made the AI acting more and more dynamic and autonomous simply was not the right approach especially for Zeus or High Command scenarios. Sometimes we think that this design flaw was made on purpose because if the AI units would give texbook examples like in your video each time everyone would be able to plan "complex" operations.

Probably not, because it just didn't work well enough in combat. But that is where the idea and initial code for SOG AI evolved from. I may go back and experiment with it some more this winter when/if I have more time.
