This movie is about a young man who is really confused with what to do with his life. The film is named Adversary because throughout the narrative we see different people challenging Siddhartha on his concept of morality, integrity, political ideology etc. Essentially the entire city of Kolkata seems to be an invincible Adversary against whom Siddhartha is trying to compete and survive. However this is the same city that he loves so much that he doesn't want to leave it. This dilemma is central to the narrative as well as its title. His siblings, both of them have identified themselves with a cause, his friend indulges in debauchery, his sister's boss is as at a better position when he comes to confront him regarding his misconduct. His girlfriend is leaving the city....the tension builds right through the narrative , never dropping in between and unleashes in a violent climax ( a sort of catharsis for Siddhartha). For me this is one Ray's best movies with a style completely contrary to the Ray of 50s and early 60s.

Satyajit Ray got Indian government's highest civilian award Bharat Ratna in 1992. He received Oscars Award for Lifetime Achievement in the same year. He was awarded the Legion d'honneur(Legion of Honour) by the President of France in 1987. Besides this he is recipient of 54 prestigious Indian and international awards.

This movie is a masterpiece of The great S.Ray. All the scenes, its depiction on the backdrop of 60s politically, socially and economically unstable Calcutta was very creative, artistic and direct. Situation of a middle class family, an educated guy who is surviving in the political turmoil, and some how manage to settled in a job which satisfies his intellectual quest. All minor depiction is also extraordinary. Thanks for the review. This movie is still relevant to the current era. LOve from kolkata and a calcasian (an usual terminology who borned and grown in calcutta)❣❣❣❤❤ ❤❤❤❤

Ah! finally, I was waiting for your review of this movie. His entire Kolkata trilogy is a masterpiece. When I saw Pratidwandi for the first time, I could not believe it is a Satyajit Ray movie, it is so unusual from storytelling, camera angle, and so on. I can promise you one thing, you are in for a treat for Jana-Aranya the last of the Kolkata trilogy, it shocked me to the core.

Yes this is kind of a 'new wave' film unlike other Ray films. I often compare Pratidwandi with "Memories of Underdevelopment" by Tomas. G. Alea. Hope you'll watch Ray's "Ganashatru" an adaptation of "Public Enemy" by Henrik Ibsen. It is so relevant in todays political environment in India.

Fantastic review Jimmy and Deniz 👏 *Satyajit Ray* and *Dhritiman Chatterjee* are 2 absolute legends and stalwarts of Indian cinema. *Dhritiman Chatterjee* has not only worked in Bengali film industry but he has also worked and still working in all the South Indian film industries, in Hindi film industry and worked in multiple international films. True cinephiles know how big and legendary *Dhritiman Chatterjee* is. Happy Birthday to the legend *Dhritiman Chatterjee* 🙏🏼 Today is also the death anniversary of another Bengali genius filmmaker *Rituparno Ghosh* We're missing our Ritu Da 😢 Anyways coming back to this film, this is the 1st part of Ray's *"Calcutta Trilogy"* so don't miss the next 2 films of this trilogy i.e *"Seemabaddha"* and *"Jana Aranya"* and please complete the trilogy. Mrinal Sen's *"Calcutta Trilogy"* is also must watch. Non-Bengalis and westerners mostly know about Ray's *"Apu Trilogy"* but if they want to know about Bengal's culture, Bengal's history, Bengal's political ideology they must watch Ray's *"Calcutta Trilogy"* Ray portrayed the frustration, anger of the unemployed youth, the sociopolitical unrest, the ideological clash between the central(Indian) and state(Bengal) governments, the hierarchy in workplace and in the society as a whole in this film and in the whole trilogy and all of these factors are still very much relevant and existent even today in Bengal. This trilogy was one of the most harsh, realistic projects of Ray. His contemporary filmmakers like *Ritwik Ghatak* and certain film critics used to criticise him saying that Ray caters to the western media and mindset and makes hunky-dory films, he never really addresses Bengal's issues through his films. So this trilogy was kind of his answer to them hence it is more dark, gritty and hard-hitting but still the sarcastic humour is present in this trilogy. This entire trilogy is very close to my heart because I love my city Kolkata. Thank you guys for this lovely review and the funny intro 😘

Its Dhritiman Chatterjee's birthday and Rituparno Ghosh's 8th death anniversary. Both of them are very close to my heart. Its always a pleasure to listen to Dhrititiman sir's voice. Hope you will watch "Noukodubi"( amazon prime) someday. A beautiful collaboration of these two. Dhrititiman chatterjee as a modern loving father is a delight to watch. The father-daughter relationship of this film is so beautiful that I go on watching it again and again. Yes, Kolkata faced a lot...but there is nothing like Kolkata, The City of Joy. Miss u Kolkata.

Kolkata or Calcutta till mid 50s was the most economically powerful city in Asia after Tokyo (plus Kolkata had a rich cultural side) so much so when Singapore became an independent nation, its first PM said he want Singapore to be like Calcutta. But things changed rapidly from there for the worst, first the influx of refugees at the time of partition and then at the time of Bangladesh war plus the rise of ultra left who were highly motivated by Chinese revolution and by the result of the Vietnam war. This ultra left movement sucked in poor ppl who were struggling to survive and also educated ppl who wanted to create a class less society. They got disillusioned quickly but irreparable damage was already done. What happened due to this, development stopped, investment shifted to Bombay or Mumbai, ppl started leaving the city and till now yet to recover from that shock. Like me and millions of Bengalis Satyajit Ray was also pained by seeing this. I am not seeing ppl were angry for no reason, they were angry everywhere even Bollywood movies have showed it but the violence which happened on the streets of Kolkata didn't happen anywhere else and was very unfortunate.

It was an interesting review! However I would like to point out to you that the naxalite movement was not so much to do with terrorism but it was a radical communist revolution undertaken by the people of the far left ideology against the centrist government's rampant corruption and general apathy towards the working class. I would recommend you to watch Mrinal Sen's "Calcutta 71" and "Padatik" to get a better idea about the history and politics of the movement and its aftermath ( these films belong to the Calcutta trilogy of Sen along with "Interview" ). Keep it up.
