Some airlines use 4 of these engines. The smoke comes from pooled oil on the bottom cylinders . Each engine required 2 quarts after a cross country run. My Dad service this and other 2v row engines and airframes in SFO until the jets arrived. all the airlines wanted him and he changed jobs. The Connie is the most beautiful airframe ever built . Imagine 4 of these engines carrying passengers everywhere in the USA. A pilot syncing these engines to eliminate noise and vibration, so the stews served TWA Tea in the cabin. And fresh dinners, not the crap we eat today.

My Dad flew a US Army Air Force (USAAF) P-47 in the CBI. Two of his fighters sustained severe enough damage that they were turned into parts planes. They weighed between 7 and 8 tons depending on ammo, rockets, and bomb load. The P-47 could reach 440 mph, and a 40000 ft altitude. The engine in the video is 18 cylinder “Double Wasp” Engine. The P-47 was a feared weapon of war, capable of air to air fighting, bombing, strafing, and launching 5”’napalm rockets.
@dkoz83212 жыл бұрын
P-47 was A-10 of its day. With its 8 .50 cal guns. Though P-47 was not my favorite Allied fighter of the war. To me that was P-38 followed by P-61 Black Widow in its A/G configuration.
@SgtAwesome97 Жыл бұрын
@@dkoz8321 It is literally the grandfather of the A-10, made by the same company and has the same name. Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II. It's definitely my personal favorite allied fighter, hands down.
@dkoz8321 Жыл бұрын
@@SgtAwesome97 Sgt. unfourtunately it was not. Literal 'grandpa' of A-10 was an enemy Axis type. A late war Ju-87G Stuka variant with dual 37mm Boardkannone. The design team of A-10 , at Fairchild, was required to study book '"Stuka Pilot", by Luftwaffe Oberst (colonel) Hans-Ulrich Rudel. A fanatical nazee during war, and neo-nutzee after, he was credited with hundreds of tank and armored targets on Eastern Front against Soviets. He flew 1000 missions. P-47 was still a large influence on evolution of A-10. Pilot protection, engine protection, simple reduntant flight control, massive firepower. There is critisism of team relying on Rudel and Ju-87G. First is that Ju-87 suffered terrible attrition on Eastern Front and Rudel was a statistical outlier. Even by standards of WWII, StukaG had to get close to T-34 to knock it out with its cannon and had to strike top and engine lid to stop Soviet armor. Which made it volunmerable to AAA. Something that A-10 is also critisised for. Unless it is deploying PGM outside of AAA and ADA threat ranges , and in air-air permissive environment. Myself, being former Army 13A Fire Suppourt officer, beleive that A-10 has 20-30 years left. If it is properly funded, maintained, rewinged, has updated ECM, and munitions upgrade. So write your Congressman. Biggest enemy of A-10 is Pentagon politics.

This incredible engine was made about 45 minutes from where I live in Connecticut, and there is a beautiful example at the New England Air Museum at Bradley International Airport. @@SE-dn7xl Ah, but don't forget how much more durable the wasp engine was compared to the merlin. The wasp engine could take a beating and still operate while the merlin engine had to be stopped for service. @@1CharlieWolf- The most common reliability point of the P&W engine was that it was air cooled and could continue flying with a cylinder or two destroyed, while the RR Merlin was water cooled and much more subject to overheating and destructing itself if any aspect of its cooling system was damaged, causing fluid loss.

My Uncle flew an F4-U Corsair in the Pacific during WW2. I think it would be great fun to take a team of modern aeronautical engineers and - using all the modern tools - design their best fighter around this engine.....and see how closely it resembles the Corsair, Hellcat, or Thunderbolt.

I think it really would depend on the intended mission profile. If we're going for pure ground attacker(which realistically could be its only role), I'd probably look like the AD-4 Skyraider.
