+Gigi Ventura To divide a number raised to an exponent by the same number raised to a different exponent, we subtract the exponent in the denominator from the exponent in the numerator. In this example the numbers are both "a" and the exponents are 2/3 and 1/6. To subtract 1/6 from 2/3 we must create a common denominator. (This is explained more fully in Why U Pre-Algebra Chapters 14 and 15.) We do this by multiplying both the numerator and denominator of 2/3 by 2 which gives us 4/6. Since they have the same denominators, we can then subtract 1/6 from 4/6 which gives us 3/6 or 1/2.

I am trying to figure out questions with negative fractions that have fractional exponents when one number in the fraction is negative. I can't find a video on it anywhere!

So is an irrational power impossible? Or does it just produce an irrational, hard to calculate, answer?
