I live in zone 9b I live about and hour or so north of you. I have never pre-chilled any of my bulbs. I have some tulips that I bought from Sam's Club about 8 years ago and they have always grown beautifully without pre-chilling. They have long stems and big beautiful flowers. I think the trick is to get them in the ground early enough. I did that before knowing that bulbs had to be pee-chilled in our area. Even though i've known about it for a few year's now i've taken a chance and just planted without pre-chilling. Some things work out and others don't. I notice that hyacinths do benefit from pre-chilling. I only have one refrigerator so it would be hard to pre-chill bulbs. 😭 I can't wait to see your updates .

I'm the opposite. I am in zone 6b, right on the edge of 7a. Our winters just aren't staying as cold for long enough. My tulips, hyacinths, and daffodils have struggled hard the last few years. I normally plant bulbs the 3rd or 4th week in October. Now, i think i'm going to have them delivered in mid September, chill them until the beginning of December and plant at that time.

You have no idea how super helpful this video was to me! I purchased a bunch of bulbs a couple of weeks ago and was worried that I would have to find refrigerator space for all of them. I was even thinking of purchasing a mini fridge to store them in my garage. Thanks to your video, I now know that I only need a small amount of space for the ones that need chilling, so I should be able to make enough room in my kitchen refrigerator for them. I actually live in western Canada in zone 3 and last fall I bought bulbs & planted them in pots for some earlier spring colour as I find that no matter when the package says the tulips are supposed to bloom, nothing starts blooming until May. I planted only tulip bulbs into pots but I stored them in an unheated shed and we had temps go down to -40°c 😢 the bulbs are all mushy. I’ll try again this fall but chilling the bulbs in the fridge & planting them in pots in March to see what happens. Wish me luck!

Hi, I live in Malaysia - average temp is around 32 deg celcius on warm days & abt 24 deg celcius on rainy days & nights. I have to chill all my Amaryllis bulbs as they simply do not give out any flowers otherwise. I normally keep them in the crisper section of my fridge for abt 6 weeks. However, not all of them flower despite refrigeration. Still, it's the only way for me.

Hey everyone, 2 comments. (1) Most Irises are rhizomes, not bulbs: her info applies to bulb irises, like Dutch irises. And (2) I want to remind folks that if you must pre-chill, your bulbs may need to be used as if they were annuals. Or dug yearly and pre-chilled again.
