I remember my mom had preordered Lego Harry Potter and she took me and my brother to gamestop to pick it up. The preorder bonus was a shirt that said "dumbledore's army" on it. The cashier saw my mom had two kids so they gave her two shirts. Idk that just seemed like a really special moment to me. Preorder bonuses will never be the same :/

The only time I wasn't disappointed with a pre-order was Halo 2. Getting home from the midnight release was amazing. Putting the disk in the system without having to download anything. Then just staying up all night playing multiplayer with people all over the country. The experience could never be replicated for me.

@@insertcolorherehawk3761 They didn't end up selling Ace Combat 5 separately so I'd say it was worth it. You also got the season pass if you bought the deluxe edition (plus some skins and decals if I'm not mistaken), which isn't anything special as you can normally get it anytime after launch.

Wind waker was one of the first games I pre-ordered as a kid and still feels like it's the only good pre-order deal I ever have done lol. Having access to not only OoT but also Master quest kept me very busy as someone that never had an n64.

My two favorite collector's editions by far are those for Bravely Second: End Layer and Metroid Dread. Bravely Second only had a mini soundtrack and an artbook, but the disc came in an actual jewel case (none of those awful cardboard sleeves), and the artbook was a big, extensive, hardcover affair that felt really well put-together. I still keep it on my bookcase. Metroid Dread came with a similarly small amount of extras, those being a gorgeous SteelBook case for the game, another very nice artbook, and art cards that depicted different games in the series. Another excellent collector's edition was Rune Factory 4 Special for the Switch. All it came with was an artbook, but was (again) really well built and covered the entire series.

Yeah, I've always thought pre-orders were scams. Why should I pre-pay for a product that doesn't exist yet? I'll just buy it when it exists. I've noticed though, whenever I buy a game from GameStop on launch day, I always seem to magically get "the last copy". Me: "Hi I'd like a copy of Pokemon Omega Ruby?" GameStop employee: "Did you pre-order it?" Me: "No..." GameStop employee: *checks drawer* "Wow, you got the last copy! You lucked out!" Uh-huh. Right. I guess I'm just on a launch-day-last-copy streak.

A 15 year old me was told that back when I got Ratchet: Deadlocked the day it came out (The first game I ever bought on launch day). At the time I was like "Wow, I got lucky! Here's 5 bucks for Metroid Prime Hunters." When I got a little older and reminisced on that day I was like, huh, I wonder if that guy was lying. Then again, I was probably more prone to believe it because I was at the one 6 minutes away from that one first and they told me they were out.

Any preorder you get can be cancelled easily if you change your mind. Preorders help them to estimate how many copies they should order. I have legitimately seen stores run out of all non-preordered copies. Most reviews of major games will drop days before release. You can absolutely be informed before you’re locked into purchase.

I work at GameStop and we ran out of Splatoon 3 copies for people who didn’t preorder the game. Like we had to, between each GameStop location in my area, share street copies so that people who didn’t preorder could still get copies of the game

I've only ever found pre-orders to be a disaster. I got Smash for 3DS on pre-order which had "attempted delivery" which was a lie as I was at home. So I cancelled the order, just bought the game in a store, then later that day the pre-order arrived anyway!

Really? I've had great experiences with pre-orders, despite the fact that I only pre-ordered two video games: Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens physically and Marvel's Avengers digitally. I didn't get any benefit from The Force Awakens, but I did get my order on the afternoon of June 28, the launch day. So no problem there. As for Marvel's Avengers, I got a few skins and trinkets for pre-ordering (Some of which were really cool) AND, as a bonus, I got the game 3-4 days early. But I had to fork over $90 for a semi-decent looter shooter version of the Avengers. Anyways, I'm sorry if you've had some terrible experiences from pre-ordering. Personally, while Scott did point out the flaws of it in his video, I find them just a nifty way to experience gaming before anyone else, plus you get a little bonus with it.

The last game I preordered was Borderlands 3, spent £90 on the Super Deluxe edition because of my undying love for Borderlands 2. Went to the shop after work as they launched it a day early, got there for about 10pm. When I realised the game was an unoptimised piece of shit, I was heart broken. Played through the patches hoping they would fix it, they didn't. Roll on to last month when they announced a season pass 2 on a game I had spent £90 on, thinking I'd get all the content from the word go. Never touching the game again. Never preordering a game again. It left too bad a taste in my mouth, when a developer releases a buggy mess of a game and then want another £25 to get ALL the content. I still have nightmares.

Movies used to actually be really big pre-order things as well back in the early 2000s. A lot of movies from big franchises like Star Wars, LotR, HP, etc. would have pre-order bonuses (often exclusive to particular retailers and sometimes different retailers would have different bonuses) and I think that actually helped inspire the game industry to start making pre-order bonuses a thing. It was a lot more likely back then with the demand and production rates of media to miss out on release day if you didn't pre-order. Then movies went fully digital and pre-orders just kinda died off. Not sure why it's remained for video games, but I sure wish you'd still get cool swag for pre-ordering like my Metroid Prime 2 shirt that no one would ever know was a Metroid Prime 2 shirt.

Final Fantasy 7 remake, was due to release a few weeks into the start of covid lockdown. I preordered special edition, and GAME decided to send the copies for delivery a full week before release day 😎. So many of my friends and people in my gaming groups were jealous 😜

The best preorder bonus I can remember was from GameStop for the full controller and game bundle of DJ Hero 2: a PUMA messenger bag. This was actually a legit quality made bag and everything, marketed as the ideal carrier for the turntable controller to take it to a buddy's house. I ended up buying and returning the game just so I could keep the bag and I still have and use it to this day.

I remember my first pre-order. Halo Reach. Originally pre-ordering was the only way to get the recon helmet. Eventually it was added as a low level unlock, but was nice to just have it available in general. Recon was a ledgedary set in Halo 3 since only Bungie and the lucky few given it had it.
