Here we dive into ONE EXAMPLE of how I work pre-production for songs. All artists and songs demand different approaches, but the goals reamin the same. Communicate the general ideas of the song in a meaningful and impactful way that clearly communicates what the plan is for the song. Here are some of the ways I DO THAT

I'd like to see lots more like this. I'd like to hear the demo right first, then make a long video of what was done.

Thank you so much for showing your process. I'm working on figuring out my workflow for preproduction and this video has been both eye-opening and inspiring.

I'd love to hear the final product. Sounds pretty killer. Do you charge for pre-production time? If so, is it at a rate similar to your normal studio rate?

Wow, normally jump right into production. Now curious about the PRE-production.

I need to get better at hashing out the parts before obsessing over the sonics of a cool section. That's the tough part about writing alone. I miss being in a band to some degree...

Same. Having others around is like having a filter for all the bad ideas. Lol.

Lots more like this. Why did superior drummer have a “delay”? Was that plug-in delay or a latency?

Do bands ever sit in for pre production to bounce ideas, or is that easier to do in the session?
@RecordingStudioLoser

Definitely. Sometimes it’s going to their own practice space and planning things out. The principles and experimentation remains the same. It can look like so many different things.

PLEASE NEVER DO THAT WITH A GERMAN CLIENT!!!! Here in Germany we got the strongest copyright laws, whereby "copyright law" isn't even the right term. "Copyright" means in Germany the RECORDING. Next to this we got the Composing (or in general "Creating") copyright. F.e. it is not possible to sell or buy the Authorship of a creation, like Michael Jackson bought the beatles Rights. And with this comes, that it is actually a Copyright infringement when you say: "I don't feel it in D-Minor, I translate it in F-Major", because with that you manipulate the Writers Creation and the creation is untouchable. I (as a german composer) was shocked with ease you did this. So...if you ever (EVER) have a german Client...Never change something about his writing (Melody, progression, Scale, Changes in production or arrangement are of course ok, that's your job!) without having discussed this very sensitively beforehand with the Artist. Otherwise: He feels like Chris Rock* and you are his Will Smith. (*Without even doing a Joke about Jadas Hair.) I'll charge you 50§ for the consulting in European Copyright laws, ok? ;-)
@RecordingStudioLoser

Your assuming a lot about the relationship. In this instance I was hired to manipulate the song. That a large part of production. The artist requested this. I’ve worked with European clients and been through this same process.

@@RecordingStudioLoser Ahhh..ok...that explains everything...sorry when I came across a little harsh...but now we learned both: communication is everything. You could have told this, for us traditionalists ;-)

The whole idea of “pre production” kind of implies I was hired to do it. Sorry if that was unclear.
